Chapter 5

Auteur: Tightrope
After finishing up her work, Ariel received a call from Colton. He repeated Jayson's message word for word.

Ariel immediately understood what Jayson was trying to do.

Nancy's relationship with him was, without a doubt, an affair. She had rightfully earned the title of homewrecker.

Having Ariel handle this mess was a preemptive move. If anyone ever dug up the past, they would see that Ariel, Jayson's rightful wife, had "cleared" Nancy's name. That way, Nancy wouldn't be labeled a homewrecker and could avoid scrutiny and criticism.

Jayson was truly pulling out all the stops for Nancy.

As for Jayson's "consider the consequences", it was nothing more than a warning.

If she refused to handle the matter, leaving Bluum Corp wouldn't mean a fresh start. No company would dare take her in. He had the power to cut off her livelihood.

For three years, she had done everything a wife should do. From the day she married him, she had severed ties with her past without hesitation, only to be repaid with nothing but indifference.

She was exhausted.

Ariel curled her lips into a mocking smile and said calmly, "I'm taking sick leave. If you force me to work while ill, that's a violation of labor laws. I'll see you in court."

She was already divorcing him and resigning. Why should she care if Jayson was happy or not?

After work, Ariel got into her car and saw a text from her father, Morgan Sanderson. "Lucas is out. We're having a family dinner. Are you coming?"

Though it was phrased as a question, Ariel knew full well that Morgan didn't want her there. To him, she was nothing more than a defiant daughter.

Back then, her relationship with Lucas had been a disgrace in Morgan's eyes. He saw it as an act of shamelessness. If not for her value as a bargaining chip in marrying into a powerful family like the Larkins, he would have cut ties with her and cast her out.

But the dinner was to celebrate Lucas' return. He had once been the most important person in her life.

Ariel hesitated, then touched up her makeup. She needed to look presentable. Then, without another thought, she drove straight to Sanderson Manor.

If not for Lucas, she would have had no reason to stay in touch with the Sanderson family.

When she arrived, the household staff eyed her strangely. One even frowned. "Why are you here, Ms. Walker?"

Ariel ignored them. This hadn't been her home for years. Even the household staff looked down on her and made it clear she wasn't welcome.

"Ariel?"

Lori Sanderson came down the stairs. Her expression was cold as she snapped at Ariel. "You really have no shame. Lucas just got back, and you're already here to cling to him? Do you enjoy ruining everyone's mood?"

Lori was Morgan's illegitimate daughter. She and Ariel shared the same birth year, month, and day. Yet, here she was, standing tall as the rightful daughter, throwing insults like she owned the place.

"Well, if you have any shame, why not move out of my mom's house? Let's see just how noble you really are," Ariel retorted coolly.

This house was bought years ago by her mother, Elena Walker, using the money from selling her paintings at a high price.

Yet now, Morgan was living here with his current wife, Teresa Fuller, and Lori. Lori was enjoying the very things Elena had left behind, and she had the audacity to act superior?

"You…"

Lori's face twisted with anger, but then something seemed to click. Her lips curled into a smirk as she said mockingly, "Let's see if you'll still be so smug in a minute."

"Who is this?" A sweet, curious voice cut through the tension.

Hearing the commotion, a couple emerged from the living room, leaning close to each other.

Lucas' girlfriend, Wendy Johnstone, caught sight of Ariel's face and instinctively tugged on Lucas' sleeve. "She's gorgeous."

Lucas flicked a glance at Ariel, but his eyes barely lingered before shifting right back to Wendy. His hand slid down her waist. "She's my other sister. What, are you jealous because of her?"

Wendy blushed and playfully swatted his chest before turning to Ariel with a bright smile. "I didn't know Lucas had two sisters. What's your name?"

Ariel stared at the scene, momentarily at a loss. She hadn't expected Lucas to bring his girlfriend home.

Since he was bringing Wendy to meet the family, it was clear he was serious about her.

The Lucas who once wanted to marry Ariel and was willing to give up everything for her was gone.

Now, he saw her no differently than he did Lori.

Her throat tightened. "Ariel Walker," she replied.

Wendy paused in surprise, her expression thoughtful. Then, she asked a question that made both Ariel and the Sandersons uncomfortable. "Why aren't you a Sanderson?"

Ariel said nothing.

Wendy didn't seem fazed. She smiled confidently and said, "I'm Wendy Johnstone. You can call me Wendy."

"She's going to be your sister-in-law," Lucas added casually.

This time, he finally looked at Ariel. "I've found someone I truly want to be with. Treat her as family."

It soon became clear to everyone that Alicia meant nothing to Wade. His heart belonged to Janice. Bradley came to see Janice several times, begging her to talk some sense into Wade. "I'm sure his sister would be more than happy to help you with that."Each time, Bradley was left speechless. After three months of wallowing in misery, Wade finally applied for retirement from military service. He took a position at the Garner family's company branch in Eldoria, all to remain in the same city as Janice.Chad was exasperated when he found out. He watched Janice closely for days, but she carried on as usual. Their interactions were still those of the closest friends; she seemed completely carefree and unaffected. She never sought out news about Wade, and when she heard any, she would simply remark, "I see."Janice realized she was like Ariel in that way. She refused to waste time despairing over someone who didn't deserve her affection. She would always

If Wade had found out about everything, then…Alicia struggled to maintain her composure, but the subtle shifts in her expression betrayed her. Wade had been bluffing about having proof. Even so, he had seen the flash of panic in her eyes—proof enough that Janice had been telling the truth. He had come demanding an explanation, and now everything was clear.Alicia had succeeded. After three years of meticulous planning, she had finally driven Janice away from him.The realization hit Wade like a physical blow. His eyes reddened as he fixed a malevolent gaze on Alicia."Alicia Newman, it sickens me to know how vile and despicable you are. You slandered a woman who never once treated you with malice or hostility. Did you actually think I would ever fall for you?"He bent down, staring straight into her eyes, which instantly welled with tears. This was her usual tactic—playing the victim to evoke his sympathy and a sense of duty to compensate for Janice. But now, only a cold ligh

Wade slumped to the ground near the door, looking utterly lost and defeated. Bradley waited outside in his car for a long time. As dusk began to fall and Wade still hadn't emerged, Bradley finally got out and headed into the residential area. His expression hardened the moment he found Wade. He had never seen the promising young man look so pathetic and broken."Wade, what's wrong?" Bradley asked, stepping closer.Wade didn't seem to hear him. His eyes were glazed over and rimmed with red.He had been sitting there for so long, and Janice hadn't come out to speak to him. It was clear he had ruined everything.Bradley, no longer bothering to be gentle with Wade's feelings, hauled him up from the ground and started pulling him toward the entrance.Only when they reached the car did Wade snap out of his daze and begin to resist. "I'm not leaving! She hasn't forgiven me yet. She's just upset…" His voice grew increasingly emotional.Bradley, both irritated and agitated, finally sn

Janice swallowed hard and took a slight step back. "It's too late, Wade. It's all too late. I gave you countless chances, but you never made me a priority. "You always assumed I would be fine with you neglecting me, with you choosing someone else over me, again and again. "You got spoiled by the old Janice, who loved you wholeheartedly. But Wade, feelings change. You kept choosing Alicia over me. You knew it would hurt me, yet you chose to play dumb or brush it aside."You knew what you were doing was wrong, but you counted on me getting over it because my love for you was so deep. You knew everything; you just didn't care enough about my feelings."Janice understood that it wasn't that Wade didn't care at all; it was that he never cared enough. He thought he could skip the essential work of a relationship—the comforting, the nurturing, the loving—simply because Janice's love was a given. He was arrogantly confident she would never leave him, so he brazenly repeated his mistake

Bradley slammed his foot down on the gas pedal.Upon reaching their destination, an ashen-faced Wade jumped out of the car and rushed into the building.Janice lived in a high-end residential complex where only residents or those with management approval could use the elevators. Wade had access since his face was stored in the security database, allowing him to bypass the facial recognition system. He went up to the right floor, but Janice wasn't home. She hadn't returned to her apartment.Wade tried calling her, but all his attempts failed. She didn't answer his calls or respond on WhatsApp.With no other choice, Wade went back down and borrowed Bradley's phone to try again. This time, someone finally picked up. A woman's calm voice came through the line. "Hello?"Wade immediately breathed a sigh of relief. Just as he was about to speak, a man's voice sounded in the background."Honey, you can put your things here. There's more than enough space in this house. Arrange them h

Bradley knew the two well enough to recognize that Wade was often weak to Alicia's pleas and requests. Were Wade by himself, he would answer; but Alicia's presence could easily complicate the matter. Regardless, had Wade realized how important today's wedding was—and resisted Alicia's influence—he might not have lost his final chance to make things right. The door swung open.Wade looked toward the stage, but his bride was nowhere to be seen. The hall buzzed with murmurs as guests whispered among themselves. As more people noticed Wade's arrival, the looks they gave him made his chest tighten with unease.Charles was the first to confront him. His body trembled with rage as he whipped his arm back and delivered a brutal slap across Wade's face. "Wade Garner, you're an absolute disgrace! Do you not know what day it is?
