Chapter 2

Auteur: Fishy Freedom
I suddenly remembered the time my stomach condition flared up unexpectedly. At the time, it had hurt so badly that I couldn't even walk. My life was essentially hanging by a thin thread.

I was hoping Meghan could help me contact the hospital, but she refused me with a gentle yet firm voice.

"Julian, I'm a lawyer. I can't drop a case because of you. I have a responsibility to my clients."

With that, she hung up.

I had no choice but to dial 911 myself. But before the ambulance arrived, I'd passed out from the pain.

I remembered the doctor saying that if I'd arrived any later, my stomach would have perforated.

As it turned out, her work wasn't something she couldn't put aside. It was just that I wasn't important enough to her.

I smiled wryly and forced down the bitterness in my chest.

My sudden movement startled the nurses. They came over dutifully to inform me of my condition.

"Mr. Marshall, we were working to save you all night. You're stable for now, but we'll need to keep you under observation for a few more days.

"You'll need another surgery soon since the injury to your arm is quite serious. You should contact a family member soon. We'll need a signature and someone to handle the payments."

I opened my mouth, my voice hoarse. "Ms. Hudson is my wife."

The nurses' expressions changed instantly. Shock crossed their faces, followed by awkward smiles.

"Ms. Hudson might not know that you were injured in the earthquake. Please wait for a moment. We'll get her right away."

"There's no need," I said, closing my eyes. "Don't call her. She won't come, so just give me the forms that need signing. I can pay the fees myself."

I wasn't mentally prepared to face her and lay everything out just yet.

Looking at me, the nurses hesitated.

"Well... Everything else is fine, but your arm is too severely injured. You might need a skin graft. There's a chance you can't keep the tattoo on your arm."

That tattoo was something we'd gotten together when we were dating.

Looking at it, I smiled wryly and said with a heavy heart, "It's meaningless now. I don't mind cutting that piece of flesh away. Just go ahead with the skin graft."

After what happened during the earthquake today, I'd finally realized that there was no longer a future for us.

Just then, my phone rang. It was Meghan.

Why was she calling me now? Did she finally remember me after settling her first love in?

I secretly flashed a bitter smile. My fingertip hovered over the screen for a long time before I finally answered.

"Darling, where are you? I heard the earthquake around your company was really bad. Are you okay? Why haven't you come home yet?"

My voice caught in my throat. So she knew that the earthquake had hit my office building the hardest.

We had been in love for so many years. Yet, she left with my colleague and didn't bother to look at me while I was lying there helplessly.

As soon as I spoke, I couldn't help but choke up. "Home? Which one do you mean?"

Meghan's breathing hitched. She tried to laugh it off.

"Come on. What are you saying? Don't we only have one home? Do I have a second home or something? I know I didn't come home last night and missed your fancy dinner plans. I'm sorry, okay? Don't be mad anymore, please?"

Hearing Meghan spout lie after lie, I couldn't hold back a laugh. It felt as if dozens of ants were gnawing at my heart. It was sore and ached terribly.

She used to say that she had to work late into the night. Even when we had planned a date, she would always stand me up.

I'd been stupid enough to believe her every word. I thought she was exhausted from work, so I'd make snacks for her every night and foolishly waited for her to come home.

I now wondered how much of what Meghan said was ever true.

I smiled wryly. "Meghan, let's get a divorce."

Her tone changed in an instant. She nervously said, "Julian, stop saying things like that just because you're upset. I work overtime for the both of us. Skipping a date here and there isn't such a big deal, is it? There's no need to be so petty. I'll cook for you myself to make it up to you tonight, okay?"

But before I could answer, she added quickly, "I have work to do. Let's talk tonight. See you later."

  • Dead to Her, Dead Inside   Chapter 10

Meghan held my hand tightly throughout the ambulance ride. She had been stabbed in the back and could only lie face down on the stretcher. Even breathing was difficult for her."Julian…" She suddenly called my name. Her voice was barely a whisper, her face stripped of all color. "I really regret everything. I've wronged you far too much… This stab is my punishment."Every word she spoke pulled at her wound. Sweat dripped from her forehead as the pain worsened. I gently wiped it away with a tissue."It's not your fault. I willingly went along with it."It was true. Back then, even if I had known about her and Gerald, I probably still would have been willing to treat her well.Tonight, the police needed my statement on the incident. I went to the station alone since Meghan fell into a deep sleep right after the surgery."The suspect wants to see you," the officer said as I was about to leave. After thinking it over, I agreed to meet him. After all, we'd once been colleagues."

Another colleague chimed in, saying, "How did that saying go again? Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. But that 1% is more important than all the rest!"My colleagues teased me for a few minutes before they finally let me go.Strangely, Meghan didn't approach me this time.I stopped and turned around. "Just come out. I know you've been waiting there all along."At my words, Meghan slowly stepped out from around the corner. She was holding a stuffed rabbit in her hand, which I had given her a long time ago.Once, Meghan and I had been in a silent standoff for days after a fight.I had hoped she would be the first to apologize. However, I was constantly brooding inside and kept messing up at work.In the end, I'd given in and made that stuffed rabbit myself as a peace offering.I'd placed it in a box and included a note which read, "This is a wishing rabbit. You can make a wish to it, and it'll come true."Meghan had wished for a camera. But back then, I was still an

"Stop it!" Covering her ears, Meghan broke down and shouted. However, I wasn't about to let her off that easily.I grabbed her arms and forced her to meet my gaze."I'll tell you. While you were busy being there for Gerald and caring about him, you never once thought about whether I was dead or alive! You say you love me, but you had his child behind my back!" I shouted, pouring out all the grievances and pain I'd endured because of Meghan.Once I finally calmed down, I pulled out a copy of the divorce papers I'd been carrying around and handed them to her."Let's get a divorce and part ways amicably."Her hand trembled as she took the papers. Tears rolled down her cheeks and fell onto the page, smudging the ink. However, I no longer had the mood to comfort her.…A few days later, I returned to work once my injuries had mostly healed. The moment I stepped into the office, my boss, Mark Preston, called me in. I'd assumed he was going to scold me for delaying the project. To m

"Gerald would never do something like this!" Meghan said as she snatched the divorce papers and tossed them aside."We grew up together. There's no way he'd lie to me!"I leaned back against the pillow and sighed. "If he hasn't lied to you, then how come you didn't even know I was the one in this room?"The next moment, Meghan suddenly clung to my arm. It was only then that I noticed her eyes were red from crying. "I'm going to find him and get to the bottom of this. You have to wait for me! Julian, I won't agree to a divorce. Wait for me here. I'll be back soon."Once the divorce papers were finalized, I left a copy in the ward and got myself discharged. As soon as I got home, I packed all of Meghan's belongings into suitcases.I was about to dump everything by the door when Meghan returned. She slammed the door shut behind her and rushed over, throwing her arms around me."Gerald lied to me about everything. He doesn't even have cancer! He did it on purpose as he wanted to c

I let out a bitter laugh."Meghan, I was in the same room as Gerald that day. I saw the two of you hugging. He was calling you 'honey,' and I even heard him say that you're pregnant. You just didn't turn to look at me. You've always ignored me."Meghan's body trembled slightly, disbelief written all over her face. She seemed to suddenly understand everything. She grabbed my hand and burst into tears. "Julian, I was wrong. Please forgive me, okay? Let's return, back to our home."In the end, I shook my head, tears welling in my eyes. "No."My gaze locked onto her belly. I recalled Gerald saying that they were the real family of three.Perhaps it was just my imagination, but I suddenly felt like her belly was already slightly swollen. It was constantly reminding me that she was carrying another man's child.Meghan was still crying as I gave a wry laugh."What makes you think that I'd forgive someone who cheated and would continue living with her?""I'm sorry, Julian. I know I'v

The moment Meghan burst into the room, my mind went completely blank. But the very next second, she turned away as if to avoid looking at me. It wasn't until she spoke that I realized she hadn't even recognized me."Sir, my family member wants this ward. Can you switch rooms with him? You can name your terms. As long as you're willing to give up the room, we can talk it over."I knew Meghan all too well. Even without seeing her face, I could hear the urgency in her voice.I remembered that one time I got into a car accident and might've hit my head. My headache was so bad that I couldn't even negotiate with the other party. In the end, I had no choice but to call Meghan. However, when she arrived at the scene, she immediately scolded me without even letting me explain."Can you please stop bothering me over every little thing? I'm a lawyer. I'm busy! I don't have time to be your babysitter."That impatient look on her face was seared into my memory. After that, I never asked he
