The silence after my words felt like drowning. Aldrid stared at me and the letter crumpled between his fingers. His knuckles went white.
"What did you just say?"
My throat tightened but I forced the words out. "I want a divorce."
He laughed. It was not a real laugh. It was the sound someone makes when they cannot believe what they are hearing. "You have lost your mind."
"I cannot give you an heir. You know this. There is no point in continuing this marriage."
His face changed. The shock melted into something darker and I took a step back without meaning to. He moved closer and I felt the weight of his Alpha presence pushing down on me. My knees wanted to buckle but I locked them in place.
"You belong to me." His voice dropped low. "You do not get to decide anything. I decide. The Council decides. Not you."
"I am done." The words came out shaky but I kept going. "I am done with all of this."
"Done?" He threw the letter on the floor. "You think you can just walk away? The Council will never let you go. You are too valuable. They saved you from that plague when you were a child. You owe them everything."
I opened my mouth to respond but he was already moving toward the door. He stopped and looked back at me.
"You will regret this."
The door slammed and the sound echoed through the room. I stood there staring at the closed door until my legs gave out. I sat on the edge of my bed and pressed my hands over my face. What had I done? But underneath the fear, something else stirred. Something that felt almost like hope.
Hours passed. I did not move from my room and no one came to check on me. The sun set and the sky turned dark. I sat by the window and watched the stars appear one by one.
A knock made me jump. Tina pushed the door open and slipped inside. Her face was pale.
"Your Highness, I need to tell you something."
My stomach dropped. "What is it?"
"The Council received your letter."
I frowned. "But I sent it this morning. How could they get it so fast?"
Tina looked down at her hands. "Prince Aldrid sent it himself."
The air left my lungs. Of course he did. He had not left in anger. He had gone straight to them to control what they heard.
"What did they say?"
"They want to see you. Tomorrow morning."
My hands went cold. "Did they say anything else?"
Tina shook her head but her eyes told me she was holding something back. "Just be careful. Please."
She left and I was alone again. I lay down and stared at the ceiling. Sleep took a long time to come and when it did, my dreams were full of whispers I could not understand.
Morning light woke me. I got dressed in a plain gown and looked at myself in the mirror. The woman looking back at me seemed like a stranger. Her eyes were hollow and her face was too thin.
Tina came to walk me to the Council chambers. We moved through the palace and I felt people watching. Their whispers followed me but I kept my eyes forward.
The guards opened the doors and I walked in. The Council sat at a long table. Lady Morwen Quinton was in the center. She had always been kind before but now her face gave nothing away.
"Calista Garrott. We received your petition."
I nodded. "Yes, Your Grace. I can no longer be Crown Princess. The marriage should end."
Silence filled the room. Lady Morwen leaned forward and her hands folded neatly on the table.
"We have considered your request."
My heart pounded. "And?"
"We cannot grant it. Not yet."
The words hit me like a slap. "What do you mean?"
"The Rite of the Red Moon is coming. It happens once every century. You must remain in Vargath until it is complete."
I stared at her. "How long?"
"One hundred days."
My breath caught. One hundred days. More than three months trapped here.
"Your Grace, please. I cannot stay here. Not after everything."
She raised her hand and I stopped talking. "This is not a discussion. You will stay. That is our decision."
I wanted to scream. I wanted to ask why they were doing this. But the look in her eyes stopped me. There was something cold there. Something that made my skin crawl.
I turned and walked out. My legs felt weak and my mind raced. Tina caught up with me in the hallway.
"Your Highness." She kept her voice low and looked around to make sure no one was listening. "They say you are to remain in Vargath for one hundred days... until the Rite of the Red Moon.”
Zevran's POVThe journey back to Noctis felt longer than it should have.Calista sat beside me in the carriage but I could see exhaustion written across her face. Dark circles shadowed her eyes. Her hands trembled slightly when she thought I was not watching. We had won. Exposed Malik. Protected our kingdom. But the cost was visible in every tired line of her body. In every moment she had to force herself to stay alert instead of collapsing."Sleep." I pulled her against me. "We are safe. Kaelen and the guards are watching. You can rest.""I am fine." She tried to sit up. To maintain the strong front she showed everyone else. "I need to stay awake. Need to be ready if something happens.""Nothing will happen." I held her firmly. Gently. "You have been running on nothing but determination for days. Your body needs rest. Your mind needs peace. Let me car
Calista's POV"It was not Davos who ordered the attack." I watched Zevran's expression shift from confusion to disbelief. "The medallion was planted. The evidence staged. Someone wanted us to blame Davos. Wanted us to accuse him and start a war between kingdoms while the real traitor stays hidden.""How do you know this?" Zevran moved closer. His hand found mine. "What did you see?""I saw his face during the fight." The memory crystallized in my mind. "Not the assassins. Someone else. Someone watching from the shadows. Someone pleased this was happening. It came to me in flashes while you fought. While I called out warnings. I saw him. King Malik of the Southern Plains.""Malik?" Zevran's voice held shock. "Are you certain? He was vocal at the summit but so was Davos. Why would Malik go this far?""Because he is not working alone." I pulled away. Paced. Tried to or
Zevran's POVI woke to the sound of breaking glass. My instincts screamed danger before my mind fully processed what was happening. Someone was in our room. Multiple someone. I rolled out of bed and grabbed the blade I kept hidden beneath the mattress. Moonlight filtered through the curtains revealing three figures dressed in black. Assassins. In our private chambers. Seconds away from Calista."Calista, get down!" I shouted. She moved instantly. Dropped to the floor behind the bed. Training from her years surviving Vargath kicked in. She knew how to make herself small. How to avoid becoming an easy target. But these assassins were professionals. They split up. Two came for me. One circled toward her.I met the first attacker with my blade. Steel clashed against steel. He was fast. Skilled. But I was fighting for my mate and that made me faster. Stronger. More deter
Calista's POVThe carriage ride back felt suffocating.Zevran sat across from me. His jaw was clenched. His hands formed fists on his knees. I felt his rage through our bond. Hot. Consuming. Ready to burn everything that threatened us. I understood the feeling. King Davos's words echoed in my mind. Prepare for consequences. Like we were children being scolded instead of sovereign rulers defending our rights."We need allies." I broke the silence."Real ones. Not kingdoms that demand submission as friendship. We need support before those consequences arrive.""Who?" Zevran looked at me. "Who at that summit seemed even remotely sympathetic? Most of them want to control us. The rest are too afraid to stand against Theron and his coalition.""Queen Elara of the Northern Forests." I had watched her carefully during the meeting. "S
Zevran's POVI hated leaving Noctis so soon after the wedding.Calista sat beside me in the carriage as we traveled to the Eastern Highlands. Her hand rested in mine but I felt tension in her grip. She was nervous. I was furious. Two days after we married and already other kingdoms were forcing us to defend ourselves. Forcing us to justify our happiness. Our bond. Our right to exist without interference."Are you okay?" she asked softly."No." I would not lie to her. "I am angry. They could not let us have even a week of peace. They had to immediately start making demands. Creating problems. Treating us like criminals for falling in love.""They are afraid." Calista looked out the window. "Afraid of what we represent. A kingdom that stayed independent. A bond that cannot be broken. Power they cannot control. Fear makes people dangerous."
Kaelen's POVThe guard's words turned my blood cold."Multiple kingdoms have sent messages, Commander. They are refusing to recognize the marriage. They say Noctis is overstepping. That King Zevran's union with the former Luna of Vargath threatens the balance of power. They want a response immediately."I stepped away from Lyra. Away from the celebration. My mind shifted from joy to strategy in seconds. This was what I feared. What I warned Zevran about weeks ago. Other kingdoms would not sit quietly while Noctis gained prominence. Would not accept our rise without pushing back. Politics was a game and we just made ourselves the biggest piece on the board."How many kingdoms?" I kept my voice low. "Who sent the messages?""Seven so far." The guard handed me sealed letters. "Theron of the Western Territories. Malik of the Southern Plains. Davos of the I
