Chapter 3

Author: Echo
"Sir! That's not true!" Lily dropped to her knees, crying. "I was with Miss Davina the whole time she brewed it! There was no poison! She dropped it herself!"

"Shut up!" Bastian barked.

His eyes darted between me and Moriah, finally landing on the spilled soup.

"Bastian, if even a maid dares to talk back to me, what authority do I have in this house?" Moriah cried harder.

She suddenly lunged for the coffee table and grabbed a fruit knife. "If you don't believe me, I might as well just die!" She pressed the blade to her wrist.

"Moriah!" Bastian panicked, snatching the knife away.

He pulled her into his arms, shaken. "She's just a maid, do whatever you want with her. Why wouldn't I believe you? I'll throw her out right now."

No. I knew Lily's family was dirt poor; she needed this job.

"Let Lily go," I forced the words out, my voice hoarse.

It was the first time I had ever begged him for anything.

Bastian turned to look at me. Seeing my bloodied face and pleading eyes, a flash of reluctance crossed his expression. But Moriah was sobbing in his arms like she couldn't breathe.

Bastian closed his eyes. When he opened them, only coldness remained.

"I'll assign you another maid, Davina."

"No, I don't want anyone else!" In that apartment, Lily was the only one who comforted me. She was like a sister to me.

But the more I pleaded, the colder Bastian looked.

"Drag this loudmouth out. Banish her from New York, and make sure I never see her face again," he ordered.

"Sir! Please, no!" Lily was dragged out, screaming in despair.

I struggled to stand, but Moriah spoke up again.

"You just kicked out a maid. Are we really just going to let Davina get away with trying to poison me?" She looked up at him, playing the victim perfectly.

Bastian frowned. "What do you want to do?"

Moriah's eyes darted to my chest. "I like... that necklace she's wearing. Give it to me as an apology, and I'll forgive her."

Without a second of hesitation, Bastian reached for my neck.

It was a vintage silver locket. The only thing my adoptive mother left me. I had told him how much it meant to me.

"No—!" I widened my eyes in panic, grabbing the necklace to protect it.

But Bastian ripped it off mercilessly. The silver chain cut my skin, leaving a bloody line. He turned and handed the necklace I treasured with my life straight to Moriah.

"Take it," he said dismissively.

Moriah clutched it triumphantly, shooting me a mocking look.

Ice pierced straight through my heart. It felt like it was being sliced open. Staring at the necklace, a thick, metallic taste rose in my throat.

I coughed violently.

The overwhelming grief and anger hit me all at once. I coughed up a mouthful of blood, my vision went black, and I passed out.

When I woke up, I was back in the bed at my apartment. The guard standing nearby relayed Bastian's message with zero emotion: "The Don says you are to stay put and recover quietly."

I stared at the ceiling, dead inside. No tears, no anger. Just an empty shell.

The wounds on my face slowly scabbed over thanks to the doctors, but the wound in my chest was rotting. I recovered quietly. And I waited. Waited for the day the pill would take me away.

Days later, the door was pushed open again.

Without a word, two guards grabbed me—though I was mostly healed—and shoved me into a car, taking me back to the estate. I asked what was going on; no one answered.

The manor hall was packed with men. The tension was suffocating. I finally found out why.

Rumors had exploded all over the internet and the tabloids that Moriah was a homewrecker. There were even leaks exposing her as a fake heiress. Bastian was furious, interrogating everyone in the family to find the rat.

Moriah leaned against him, crying perfectly. "I don't know who is vicious enough to try and ruin me... We had a wedding! I am your real wife!"

"Of course you are," Bastian coaxed her softly. "You are my only wife. Don't worry, I'll find who did this and make them pay."

He looked up and locked eyes with me just as I walked in. He paused mid-motion wiping her tears.

I lowered my eyes and stood in the corner. I knew what he was thinking. Over the years, I had been injured in front of him countless times. I had been in agonizing pain, but I never dropped a single tear. Because he once said he hated weeping women; tears didn't move him, and he would only wipe the tears of the woman he loved.

So, no matter how much it hurt, I swallowed it down.

The only exception was a year ago, when I took a fatal bullet for him. The entry angle was brutal, and I cried uncontrollably from the pain. That night, Bastian didn't get annoyed. Instead, he reached out, gently wiping my tears with his thumb. "Does it really hurt that much?" his voice was raspy.

I froze, and so did he. He probably remembered his own rule. But he didn't pull back. He wiped another tear away, his movements stiff but holding a tenderness I had never felt before.

After that, things seemed to shift between us. He started treating me better, remembering my favorite foods, visiting me when I was sick. Alarm bells rang in my head. I wanted to tell him I didn't take the bullet out of love—I did it because if he died, I'd never get my freedom.

Thankfully, everything was back to normal now.

I stood there until my legs went numb. Finally, someone handed Bastian a tablet.

"Boss, we found it. The IP address spreading the rumors traces back to... Miss Davina's apartment."

After saying that, I quietly looked at him.Bastian stared at me dead-on, as if trying to find even the slightest trace of a lie on my calm face. But there was none.On my face, there was only frankness."Good... good. So everything I did was for nothing..." He suddenly started laughing lowly. His laugh was hoarse, pulling at his abdominal wounds, causing him to cough violently. He coughed like it was tearing his heart and lungs apart, his face turning bright red.I watched quietly, making no move to approach him. Finally, his coughing stopped. When he looked up again, he said:"If that's the case,""You can go."My heart gave an imperceptible skip.I didn't hesitate. I turned and walked toward the door, step by step."Wait."His voice sounded behind me."Davina," he looked at my back, his voice terribly hoarse, "in this vial is the newest neurotoxin from the black market."I saw him fumble for something under his pillow and place it on the nightstand with a soft click."There is no an

Marcus arrived very quickly. Just as they were about to move him onto the stretcher, the unconscious man suddenly reacted. His eyes snapped open. Those pupils, glazed over from blood loss and extreme pain, saw me. In an instant, disregarding his torn abdominal wound, he struggled to sit up and grabbed my wrist in a death grip. His hand was burning hot, yet his grip was astonishingly strong, like a red-hot iron pincer branding me with pain."Don't go..." He looked at me, his lips trembling, his voice hoarse and broken. "Davina... don't leave me again..."I tried to break free, but he gripped tighter, his knuckles turning white from the force."Boss! You're badly hurt, you need medical attention immediately!" Marcus was sweating bullets with anxiety. He wanted to step in, but didn't dare use force."Get lost!" Bastian growled low. His bloodshot eyes were filled with an obsessive madness, his gaze never leaving my face. "No one... is taking you away from me..."Wynn's face turned green. H

Bastian closed his eyes. When he opened them again, they were full of bloodshot veins. He slowly raised his hand, giving a "stand down" signal to his men.The men in black quickly backed out of the house."Fine." His voice was terribly hoarse. "I won't force you."My hand holding the gun didn't lower; I watched him warily."But I won't give up, Davina."Saying that, he didn't look at me again. He turned and strode away.It wasn't until his black figure completely disappeared that my tense nerves suddenly snapped. The gun in my hand dropped to the floor with a clatter, my legs gave out, and I nearly collapsed."Davina!" Wynn rushed over, hugging me tight, his voice trembling with lingering fear."Are you okay?" he asked shakily, touching my cold face.I leaned against his chest, unable to stop shaking.Despite surviving this ordeal, there was no peace in my heart, only worry for the future.I knew Bastian wouldn't just let this go.Anna threw herself at me, hugging my leg, crying so har

Just as my hand touched the door curtain, Bastian's voice rang out behind me.His voice no longer carried the icy intimidation of a Godfather. Instead, it carried an uncontrollable tremor, and a borderline pathetic plea."Come back with me." He spoke softly, every word sounding like it drained all his strength. "I really, really miss you.""These past three years, I took revenge on the Bianchi family, I punished her, I searched the whole world for a way to resurrect you. Everyone said I was crazy..."He grew more agitated as he spoke, practically on the verge of tears. This was the first time I had ever seen him cry.I quietly watched his loss of control. Waiting for him to finish, I spoke softly."Bastian, do you remember who took my adoptive mother's necklace?"His body visibly stiffened."Do you remember why I was stuck in a sub-zero freezer for two days?""And that time, why did I fall from such a high place?"He opened his mouth to say something but found his throat too dry to mak

(Davina's POV)That voice. Low and familiar."Long time no see."My fingertips trembled uncontrollably, but I immediately clenched my fists, forcefully suppressing the shudder.I lowered my eyes, not daring to look into the eyes I had seen in countless nightmares. Turning slightly, I whispered to Wynn, "Wynn, take Anna to the break room."Wynn looked at me, then at the intruder, his doubts deepening. But he didn't ask anything. He just squeezed my hand hard, speaking in a voice only we could hear, "Call me if you need anything." Then, holding Anna, he walked into the back room, looking back at us three times.Only the two of us were left in the gallery. The air was terrifyingly quiet.I took a deep breath. When I looked up again, my face was entirely calm.I even walked behind the counter and poured him a glass of water. "Sir, please have some water."He suddenly twitched the corner of his mouth, revealing a smile with zero warmth. "Madam, you look very much like my late wife."My eyel

  • Dear Don, I Died for Another Man   Chapter 16

In the small town near the Canadian border, the spring weather was lovely. On the corner of the street was a cozy little craft shop. Inside hung some paintings and hand-woven decorations. At this moment, a woman in a plain long dress was keeping her head down, patiently holding the hand of a rosy, porcelain-doll-like little girl, teaching her to paint on a canvas. The little girl was about two or three years old. She wore her hair in two little buns, had pink cheeks, and stared with big round eyes. Mimicking her mother, she called out in a milky, childish voice, "The sun is yellow..."The woman's eyes were gentle, a smile on her lips. She lightly kissed the girl's hair. "Good job, baby."The door was pushed open. A handsome, refined man walked in, holding a cup of hot coffee. He naturally handed it to the woman's lips, saying gently, "Davina, take a break."Davina looked back at him and smiled. It was a relaxed and bright smile, carrying complete trust and reliance. "Got it."Wynn smil
