Chapter 5

Author: Echo
I thought I misheard him.

"What did you say?"

He put the bowl aside and avoided my gaze. "I know it wasn't you. It's not in your nature to do something like that," he said quietly.

"You knew?" My voice trembled. "If you knew I was innocent, why did you force me to take the blame? Why did you lock me in that freezer?"

Bastian stood up, tugging at his tie in frustration. "Moriah just became the Don's wife. She's insecure," he tried to justify. "She faked the rumors to test me. To see who I would side with."

"If I exposed her in front of everyone, she would've broken down."

"Davina, to calm her down, I had to play along."

He stepped closer to the bed, looking down at me with a hint of pity. "You suffered for it."

You suffered for it.

Four empty words to brush off everything I had been put through. I stared at the man in front of me. The man I had bled for. Just to keep another woman from "breaking down," he tossed me into a sub-zero freezer, letting me freeze and agonize until I nearly died.

"Heh..."

I suddenly laughed. Not out of anger, but sheer, bleak irony. I was laughing at my own stupidity and at how absurd fate was. I laughed until my shoulders shook and physical tears escaped the corners of my eyes.

Bastian seemed stung by my laughter. He grabbed my shoulders, frowning hard. "What's so funny? I already cleared your name. I'll compensate you! I already dealt with the guards who starved you."

"Davina, you've been with me a long time. I know you've had it hard." His voice softened, his eyes carrying a fake depth. "I promise. Next time. Next time, I'll make it up to you properly."

I stopped laughing. Slowly, finger by finger, I pried his hands off my shoulders.

"There won't be a next time, Bastian." I closed my eyes in exhaustion. "I'm tired. Please leave."

He stood there frozen for a long time before finally walking out with a cold expression.

For the next two days, Bastian delivered his "compensation."

Endless streams of custom jewelry and limited-edition Birkin bags were sent to my room. His assistant even dropped off brochures for a private island in Tahiti, saying Bastian would take me on vacation once Moriah's mood stabilized.

I tossed them straight in the trash without looking. I didn't plan on going anywhere. Though an island wouldn't be bad—I could always stage an accidental fall off a cliff.

Today was the fifth day. The day the pill would take effect.

I wore a light black trench coat and tucked Wynn's old pocket watch close to my chest. I opened the door, waiting for Bastian to pick me up.

But the moment I stepped out of the elevator, a sharp pain struck the back of my neck.

Everything went black.

Freezing ocean winds, heavy with the scent of salt, battered my face. I woke up with a gasp. The blinding sun made me squint. I realized I was bound tight with thick hemp ropes, dangling mid-air.

It was an abandoned deep-water dock. I was hanging from a massive industrial crane.

Fifty feet to my left, another woman was hanging from a second crane.

Moriah.

She was screaming frantically, thrashing and sobbing. "Help! Bastian! Save me!"

I looked down. Dozens of heavily armed mafia soldiers stood on the concrete. The man leading them wore a burgundy suit, a nasty scar running down his face.

Arthur.

I recognized him. He was Bastian's biggest rival, a psychotic boss from an enemy family.

Tires screeched as three black bulletproof SUVs tore into the docks. Bastian jumped out of the lead car. He was pale as a ghost, his eyes deadly.

"Arthur! Let them go! Our beef doesn't involve women!" Bastian drew his gun and roared.

"Doesn't involve women? When you slaughtered my brother, did you care that he had a wife and kids?!" Arthur laughed like a maniac.

He held up a remote control. "Today, you're going to learn what it feels like to lose the love of your life!"

Arthur pointed up at us.

"On the left, your brand-new wife. The apple of your eye. On the right, the woman who's been by your side for three years, taking your bullets."

"This remote will only lock one crane's winch. The other one gets dropped."

Arthur's smile turned sickeningly gleeful. "Choose, Bastian. Your beloved wife, or your loyal woman? You can only save one."

The wind howled.

Bastian stood frozen, his hand shaking violently.

"Bastian! Save me! I don't want to die! Please!" Moriah's shrieks echoed across the water.

I just watched him silently.

My heartbeat began to slow down abnormally. My limbs were growing cold, my breathing faint. The drug was finally kicking in.

I suddenly remembered the promise he made by my bed two days ago.

"I promise. Next time, I'll make it up to you properly."

I watched him. He shut his eyes tightly in agony, the muscles in his jaw ticking.

Finally, his eyes snapped open. He raised his hand, pointing at Moriah in the sky, his voice raw.

"I choose Moriah."

After saying that, I quietly looked at him.Bastian stared at me dead-on, as if trying to find even the slightest trace of a lie on my calm face. But there was none.On my face, there was only frankness."Good... good. So everything I did was for nothing..." He suddenly started laughing lowly. His laugh was hoarse, pulling at his abdominal wounds, causing him to cough violently. He coughed like it was tearing his heart and lungs apart, his face turning bright red.I watched quietly, making no move to approach him. Finally, his coughing stopped. When he looked up again, he said:"If that's the case,""You can go."My heart gave an imperceptible skip.I didn't hesitate. I turned and walked toward the door, step by step."Wait."His voice sounded behind me."Davina," he looked at my back, his voice terribly hoarse, "in this vial is the newest neurotoxin from the black market."I saw him fumble for something under his pillow and place it on the nightstand with a soft click."There is no an

Marcus arrived very quickly. Just as they were about to move him onto the stretcher, the unconscious man suddenly reacted. His eyes snapped open. Those pupils, glazed over from blood loss and extreme pain, saw me. In an instant, disregarding his torn abdominal wound, he struggled to sit up and grabbed my wrist in a death grip. His hand was burning hot, yet his grip was astonishingly strong, like a red-hot iron pincer branding me with pain."Don't go..." He looked at me, his lips trembling, his voice hoarse and broken. "Davina... don't leave me again..."I tried to break free, but he gripped tighter, his knuckles turning white from the force."Boss! You're badly hurt, you need medical attention immediately!" Marcus was sweating bullets with anxiety. He wanted to step in, but didn't dare use force."Get lost!" Bastian growled low. His bloodshot eyes were filled with an obsessive madness, his gaze never leaving my face. "No one... is taking you away from me..."Wynn's face turned green. H

Bastian closed his eyes. When he opened them again, they were full of bloodshot veins. He slowly raised his hand, giving a "stand down" signal to his men.The men in black quickly backed out of the house."Fine." His voice was terribly hoarse. "I won't force you."My hand holding the gun didn't lower; I watched him warily."But I won't give up, Davina."Saying that, he didn't look at me again. He turned and strode away.It wasn't until his black figure completely disappeared that my tense nerves suddenly snapped. The gun in my hand dropped to the floor with a clatter, my legs gave out, and I nearly collapsed."Davina!" Wynn rushed over, hugging me tight, his voice trembling with lingering fear."Are you okay?" he asked shakily, touching my cold face.I leaned against his chest, unable to stop shaking.Despite surviving this ordeal, there was no peace in my heart, only worry for the future.I knew Bastian wouldn't just let this go.Anna threw herself at me, hugging my leg, crying so har

Just as my hand touched the door curtain, Bastian's voice rang out behind me.His voice no longer carried the icy intimidation of a Godfather. Instead, it carried an uncontrollable tremor, and a borderline pathetic plea."Come back with me." He spoke softly, every word sounding like it drained all his strength. "I really, really miss you.""These past three years, I took revenge on the Bianchi family, I punished her, I searched the whole world for a way to resurrect you. Everyone said I was crazy..."He grew more agitated as he spoke, practically on the verge of tears. This was the first time I had ever seen him cry.I quietly watched his loss of control. Waiting for him to finish, I spoke softly."Bastian, do you remember who took my adoptive mother's necklace?"His body visibly stiffened."Do you remember why I was stuck in a sub-zero freezer for two days?""And that time, why did I fall from such a high place?"He opened his mouth to say something but found his throat too dry to mak

(Davina's POV)That voice. Low and familiar."Long time no see."My fingertips trembled uncontrollably, but I immediately clenched my fists, forcefully suppressing the shudder.I lowered my eyes, not daring to look into the eyes I had seen in countless nightmares. Turning slightly, I whispered to Wynn, "Wynn, take Anna to the break room."Wynn looked at me, then at the intruder, his doubts deepening. But he didn't ask anything. He just squeezed my hand hard, speaking in a voice only we could hear, "Call me if you need anything." Then, holding Anna, he walked into the back room, looking back at us three times.Only the two of us were left in the gallery. The air was terrifyingly quiet.I took a deep breath. When I looked up again, my face was entirely calm.I even walked behind the counter and poured him a glass of water. "Sir, please have some water."He suddenly twitched the corner of his mouth, revealing a smile with zero warmth. "Madam, you look very much like my late wife."My eyel

  • Dear Don, I Died for Another Man   Chapter 16

In the small town near the Canadian border, the spring weather was lovely. On the corner of the street was a cozy little craft shop. Inside hung some paintings and hand-woven decorations. At this moment, a woman in a plain long dress was keeping her head down, patiently holding the hand of a rosy, porcelain-doll-like little girl, teaching her to paint on a canvas. The little girl was about two or three years old. She wore her hair in two little buns, had pink cheeks, and stared with big round eyes. Mimicking her mother, she called out in a milky, childish voice, "The sun is yellow..."The woman's eyes were gentle, a smile on her lips. She lightly kissed the girl's hair. "Good job, baby."The door was pushed open. A handsome, refined man walked in, holding a cup of hot coffee. He naturally handed it to the woman's lips, saying gently, "Davina, take a break."Davina looked back at him and smiled. It was a relaxed and bright smile, carrying complete trust and reliance. "Got it."Wynn smil
