LOGINEthan stormed out of the house with a lot on his mind. He thought that Autumn had changed so much in the last few days.
Was she so upset about the dinner? It wasn’t like they were in love or something for her to get hurt that he didn’t show up. He didn’t want to judge her based on her upbringing, but he couldn’t help but compare her to Naomi. Naomi was always put together even when she was upset. She didn’t lash out when things didn’t go away. His mood turned sour when he thought of the slap she had given Lydia earlier today. He brought out his phone and sent a text message to his friend group chat, asking his friends to meet up. The car stopped in front of the house and Ethan got in. James was sitting at the front seat with the driver. “Where to, Mr Grant?” James asked, turning to the back as Ethan settled in. “The Meridian Club” he answered, rubbing two fingers against his forehead. Ethan closed his eyes briefly before he remembered something. “James, didn’t you give Autumn the card I sent that day?” he asked, because he believed if she had at least gotten the card, she shouldn’t have been so pissed. James scratched the back of his head awkwardly. “I did, but…” he trailed off, unable to speak. Ethan saw the hesitation and got irritated. “What is it?” “It was your fifth anniversary sir, not Mrs Grant’s birthday” The words sliced through Ethan and he froze. “What?” “I didn’t dare to open the card after you handed it to me. If I had known, I would have changed it to a suitable one” James explained, lowering his eyes. Ethan clenched his hands and closed his eyes briefly. “It was just a card. Does she have to be so dramatic about it?” he muttered under his breath. James bit his lips before he would say something above his pay grade. “Mrs Grant sounded very happy when I told her you agreed to dinner” he said instead. Ethan opened his mouth to reply but whatever he had to say was buried after James’s words. Maybe he messed up this time. But did that mean she had to go around making life difficult for everyone else? He leaned back against his chair and closed his eyes. He didn’t want to talk about it anymore. Anything that had to do with Autumn was draining. Within the hour, they arrived at The Meridian Club and Ethan was escorted to the private booth where his friends were waiting. Felix Grant, Rourke Sinclair, and Marcus Hale have all been friends with Ethan since they were young. Felix was Ethan’s cousin and closest friend, and had never liked Autumn. They all became quiet when they noticed Ethan’s foul mood as he took a seat beside them. “Is this about the restaurant?” Marcus asked, and Ethan’s expression darkened. “How do you know about that?” Rourke scoffed, taking a sip of his drink. “It’s all over the internet. My wife showed me earlier” Felix remained quiet. The moment he saw the news, he knew what that day had been. After all, he had been the one to send Ethan the information about Naomi. “So? Are you worried?” Marcus asked with concern all over his face. “I’m not worried about the article. It’s Autumn. Since that night, she has become something else.” He sighed, downing the drink the waitress had poured in one go. “It’s like she is a different person now” Rourke frowned. “Autumn? Hasn’t she always been docile?” At the mention of Autumn’s name, Felix’s expression turned sour. “Docile? She is nothing but a pretentious bitch that trapped Ethan in a marriage he never wanted” he sneered. “I’m relieved that Naomi is back and she now knows Ethan’s heart belongs to someone else” Rourke shifted uncomfortably, looking at Ethan to see if there was any reaction from him. “Felix, maybe you should control your tone. That’s Ethan’s wife you are talking about” Felix’s expression shifted into an ugly sneer. “Ask Ethan if he even wants to be in the same room with her? Wasn’t that why he chose to go after Naomi on their anniversary instead of sharing a miserable dinner with her?” Marcus let out a chuckle. “With the way you are talking, one would think you asked her out and she rejected you” Felix spat on the floor. “If her father didn’t scheme his way into making Grandpa Gerald force her to marry Ethan, she would not be able to lick the floors we walk on” Ethan should have defended his wife. The words coming out of his cousin’s mouth were brutal but he was still pissed about Autumn’s behavior. Besides, she was not here to hear them. “How exactly has she changed?” Marcus asked. Ethan lit a cigarette and took a deep drag before replying. “She keeps stirring up trouble with Naomi and my family.” Felix downed a glass of vodka. “This is exactly why I helped you search for Naomi. She was born into a reputable family and would never behave like this” Rourke nodded in agreement. Naomi and Ethan had been together for so long that everyone believed they were end game. Ethan spoilt her and Naomi cared about him. “Naomi is living with you?” He asked and Ethan’s frustration rose. “Yes. My mother wants her to spend the month with us” “Maybe that’s why Autumn has changed. She can’t bear to see you happy with Naomi” Felix commented. “Of course,” Marcus agreed. “Wives need to remember their places and learn to respect their husband’s decisions. What do they know?” he said with the confidence of a man who never has issues in his house, but his phone buzzed with a text message and his hand clenched around the device before he turned it off. Ethan was lost in his thoughts until Rourke clasped his shoulders. “Don’t think too much about it.” “Exactly” Felix agreed. “I’m happy that she is finally showing her true colours and people would stop thinking I hate her for nothing” Rourke hesitated before he spoke. “But she did look like she has been sitting there for a while in those photos” The room went quiet and Felix turned a deathly glare towards Rourke while Ethan’s expression grew cold. Rourke smiled awkwardly. “I was not trying to take her side. I was just pointing out what I saw” he muttered. Rourke’s family was not as influential as the other three so he had to depend on the other three for business connections. Felix sent him a nasty look. “You better control your words more carefully” he warned, then turned to his cousin. “Cuz, you should be happy. Now, you can finally see who she is. She has been pretending all this time” Ethan didn’t say anything after that, but his expression didn’t improve. Instead, it had gotten worse. By the time Ethan returned home, it was almost morning. The house had quieted down and everyone had gone to sleep. At least that’s what he thought until he approached the guest room occupied by Autumn and saw the lights were still on. He paused and something in him stirred. He had to admit, he had gotten used to sleeping in the same bed with her even though it was stifling. He shook his head and continued to his bedroom. “This is all for the best” he mumbled. The sound of movement in her room woke Autumn up. For a split second, she waited for someone to come into her room and tell her that Alisa had summoned her for the pending confrontation that had yet to happen. After Zara left last night, Autumn expected Alisa and Lydia to barge into her room to confront her about what happened with Zara, but it didn’t happen. She tried to push the matter to the back of her mind, but it plagued her even when asleep.Autumn wasn’t scared of the confrontation. She just wanted to avoid it.Another movement in the room made her open her eyes fully, and for a minute, she wondered who the person opening her curtains was.“Who…” She started to ask, but the words died in her mouth when the woman turned and she realized it was Sofia. She had also forgotten about the new staff for a brief second.“Good morning, Mrs Grant” Sofia greeted her before continuing with her task. “How do you feel? Would you like me to call a doctor?” she asked."No." Autumn shook her he
Everyone turned to Ethan as he walked into the room. His mouth was pressed in a thin line as his eyes scanned the room.“What’s going on here?” he demanded.Naomi was the first one to act.She hurried to his side with a frightened expression on her face. “I’m not sure, but Miss Autumn wants to employ her own staff," she explained with a timid voice, and Ethan’s eyes narrowed.“What is she saying?” Ethan looked at Autumn, who was seated calmly.Zara stepped in front of Autumn again, blocking her from Ethan’s gaze.“That woman brought in her mad friend to insult us." Alisa recovered and stormed to Ethan’s side. “Can you believe she almost hit me in my own house?” Alisa screamed.Lydia also spoke. “She wants to bring in a new chef and caretaker. What would people say?”“The truth” Zara answered with a nonchalant shrug. “Have you not been maltreating Autumn? Look at her. Was she like this before she married into your cursed family? You evil people have ripped happiness from my friend”Eth
Zara stayed with Autumn for the rest of the day. Her mother, Zainab Mensah, had sent over some soups and food for Autumn after Zara had told her about the sickness. She had also called Autumn and asked if she wanted to come over to the Mensahs' house to recover, but Autumn had declined.“Thank you, Zara” Autumn said, handing Zara the bowl she had just finished eating from.Zara glared at her. “Thank yous aren’t supposed to exist between us” she said, adjusting Autumn’s pillows so she could be more comfortable.Zara was relieved. Autumn looked better after eating. She was still worried, but Autumn was stubborn and insisted that she did not call Kani.A knock came on the door and a maid came inside. “Miss Mensah, two women are at the door. They said they are here for you and Mrs Grant."Zara lit up. “They are here. Come on." Zara helped Autumn out of the bed and to the living room where the two women were waiting. One of the women looked in her late twenties, while the other looked in h
Autumn turned around in her bed. She had a headache since morning, and it wasn’t easing, so she hadn’t been able to pull herself from bed.Her body had felt off since the gala. Not since way before, but her health seemed to have declined more since the gala. She had put off going to the hospital first so she could watch and see if it was the stress getting to her. She hadn’t been able to eat properly for days.Alisa had tightened her hold on the staff. They wouldn’t leave meals for Autumn when she missed one, claiming there wasn’t enough, and since Alisa had ordered them to listen to Naomi, they were adhering strictly to her rules.Autumn was too lazy to cook for herself on some days, so she would end up going a full day without a proper meal or any food at all.Autumn wasn’t sure if Ethan was aware of how his family and “friend” was treating her but she also didn’t care. It wasn’t like he was going to stop them. He didn’t tell Naomi that her meal timetable was ridiculous when he foun
By the time the gala was over, Naomi didn’t dare make a move to ride with Ethan.“Did something happen at the gala? Your mood has been sour since we got into the car” Lydia asked with a frown. She had been busy catching up with her friends so she didn’t have time to be with Naomi.Naomi smiled inwardly. She clasped her hands together and trembled softly. “I think I might have truly pissed Mrs Grant off this time” she answered shakily. “She and Ethan argued because of me and I feel terrible”At the mention of Autumn, Alisa's and Lydia’s faces turned into ugly frowns. “That woman” Alisa sneered. “What has she done again? I told Ethan not to take her for this event, but he insisted because Mr Asher was particular about family”“He should have taken Naomi instead and introduced her as his wife instead” Lydia snapped angrily and just then, an ugly thought formed in her head and she turned to her mother with a malicious glint in her eyes. “Why is Ethan still married to that woman? The old m
Mirabella blinked innocently. “You don’t have to be shy. We are all friends here” she urged, her eyes shining. “We experienced how you and Ethan were so in love. I’m sure there are still some feelings there, right?”Naomi wanted to collapse from the weight of her anger. She was barely fighting to shed the mistress tag that Autumn had given her on her first day in Weston, now Mirabella was insinuating the same thing in public.Someone nudged Mirabella. “Mirabella, you should learn to curb your tongue. Mrs Grant is here. How can you say such a thing?”Mirabella pouted. “But I’m not wrong. Didn’t you see the way Naomi stepped in front of Autumn earlier when she was speaking with Mr Asher?”The people around the table shifted uncomfortably at Mirabella’s bold words. Everyone had noticed it when it happened, but since Ethan didn’t say anything, they decided to ignore it.Naomi’s fingers dug into her palms, but the smile on her face didn’t waver. She knew how to handle people like Mirabella
Autumn had barely entered the hall when Ethan caught up to her.“Are you not done with telling me who I should or should not talk to?” she muttered.Ethan’s expression tightened but he didn’t argue. “Come with me. Some of my business partners want to meet my wife” then after a moment of hesitation,
Why was it different?Ethan had no answer either. But despite it all, he didn’t understand why she was being difficult. Rory just wanted to protect his daughter, she didn’t have to say all those things out there where everyone could hear. “Are you that angry about the dinner?” he finally asked. It
The ride to Weston Central where the gala would be held took about an hour. To Ethan, the silence was stifling so he spent the entire ride on his phone while to Autumn, it was normal. Just as the car pulled up to the venue, Ethan turned off his phone and looked at her. “Can you not make a scene he
Autumn stood in front of the mirror. Her eyes scanned the length of her body and she couldn’t help the satisfied smile that played on her lips.None of the Grant’s staff had assisted her in getting ready but she didn’t mind. She knew how to do her own makeup and her hair so she was fine. The deep b
