Chapter 2

Author: Mere Seconds
Just like in our previous life, our family stood at the most eye-catching spot in the neighborhood to wait.

Last time, Marissa had purposely chosen this spot because she wanted me to be utterly humiliated in public. Unexpectedly, the total opposite happened instead.

She clearly thought it was her turn to be in the spotlight this time, so she had even put on intricate makeup.

Dad, Mom, and Marissa all wore expectant looks as they waited for Xander to arrive.

At that moment, a bright red sports car came to a halt nearby.

When Marissa saw it, her eyes instantly lit up before she hurried over.

After hesitating briefly, Dad and Mom followed her.

The instant Xander stepped out of his car, he drew everyone's attention. Not only was he incredibly handsome and exuded an air of refined elegance, but his gaze shone with a cool indifference. He was in no way inferior to celebrities or models.

"Darling, you're here!" Marissa stepped closer to Xander, a red blush dusting her cheeks.

Dad and Mom immediately straightened up, their posture stiff and awkward.

"Damn, looks like the Lipton family hit the jackpot this time! How did Marissa find such a handsome and rich boyfriend?"

"I'm so envious! They sure are lucky."

"Marissa has always been the more emotionally intelligent of the two sisters, so is it any surprise that her parents love her more? Now that she's gotten herself such an extraordinary boyfriend, how could Yelena possibly compare?"

Our neighbors were gossiping madly, their tones dripping with envy.

Dad and Mom smiled proudly at their words, just like they had in my previous life.

Meanwhile, Marissa threw me a smug smile, completely missing how Xander frowned when he looked down and saw her.

Subsequently, Xander took Marissa on a date in his sports car, and the crowd could only watch enviously.

Dad and Mom puffed out their chests proudly.

"See that? Our dear Marissa was born to be a princess, unlike some people, who are fated to be poor their whole lives," Dad sneered, glancing at me.

Mom eyed me with disdain as she said, "Since she's going to marry Gordon Zolt eventually, she might as well move out earlier. It'll save us from having to look at this eyesore all day."

They had hardly finished speaking when a muscular man approached us.

"Mr. and Mrs. Lipton, Marissa told me that you plan on having Yelena move in with me, so I've come to take her away."

The man was none other than Gordon Zolt, my supposed fiance. A lecherous gleam flickered in his eyes as he scanned my body.

For a moment, Dad and Mom were confused before quickly calling Marissa, only for her to answer flippantly.

"Dad, Mom, you know she's a jinx. I finally found myself such a wonderful boyfriend. What if her continued presence at home jinxes things and ruins my prospective marriage? Since she's going to marry Gordon anyway, there shouldn't be a problem with her moving in with him early."

Dad and Mom exchanged a glance, finding her logic sound.

"Yelena, hurry up and pack your things so you can go with Gordon."

I simply stared at them with numb indifference, not at all surprised by their decision.

Gordon rubbed his hands in excitement. He was relatively well-off, and his favorite hobby was abusing women. In fact, he had already caused the deaths of two wives.

However, he was cunning, only ever marrying women who weren't favored by their families. That way, even if they ended up dead, all he had to do was pay off the family so they wouldn't sue him.

That was why he had set his sights on me while his previous wife was still hospitalized. After all, it was common knowledge that my parents hated me. Hence, he knew that no one would stand up for me no matter what he did behind closed doors after we were married.

Just like that, Gordon brought me back to his home.

The instant the door shut behind us, he dragged an assessing gaze over my body.

"Your looks aren't too bad, but I wonder if your body will be able to handle me."

The only response I gave him was a blank stare.

He swiftly disappeared into his room before coming out with something in his hands.

"Change into these clothes, then get on your knees and lick my feet clean."

With that said, he tossed the item in his hands at me before taking off his shoes and sitting on the couch. Immediately, a disgustingly foul stench permeated the air.

I looked down at the scraps of cloth he called clothing, then shot him a smile.

He quirked a brow in satisfaction. "Seems like you're well aware of your circumstances, unlike all those bitches who start wailing like a family member died when I ask them to do anything. They deserved every beating I gave them for being so annoying."

Nodding at his words, I made my way over to him.

Seeing as Mom and Dad weren't willing to return Gordon his one million dollars, they insisted that Marissa marry him. They had even decided on the wedding date. No matter how much she begged them, it was useless.Meanwhile, Xander proposed to me, and I once again lived the same life I had in my previous life. The next time I saw Marissa, her face was swollen and covered in bruises. She charged toward me, her expression crazed as she demanded, "Why? Why did I still fail to change anything? You bitch, you must have gone behind my back and done something, didn't you? Otherwise, I wouldn't have ended up like this!"She glared at me with a murderous look. "You might have been reborn, but it seems you hadn't learned from your first experience. You kept thinking you were being smart, while in reality, you were anything but. The situation you're in now was simply your fate," I answered with a cold smile. At my words, all the color drained from her face as she stared at me in disbelief.

"From the moment you deliberately approached Gordon, told him that you had a hated younger sister and goaded Mom and Dad into trading me for money, your fate was set in stone," I said, smiling at Marissa. When we were young, I always suffered because of her, but that was only because I hadn't yet learned how to be crafty, nor did I have any way to guard against her schemes. However, once I became aware of my circumstances and decided to change my fate, I began learning all sorts of things. Every day, I would envision possible futures and think about how I could protect myself against them. After all, sometimes, one had to take one's fate into one's own hands instead of leaving it up to chance. I had no choice but to save myself. After all, who else would?Marissa had imagined she would live a better life simply because she had been reborn. But she was simply reaping what she had sown. Everything happening to her now was merely the direct consequence of her own malice. "Yelena,

"I don't give a damn whose girlfriend you are! Your family accepted my wedding gift, so now that I don't want to marry Yelena anymore, either you give me back my money, or I take Marissa as my wife!" Gordon retorted aggressively. Then, with one last snort, he spun on his heel and left.I stood there, amused at how things had turned out. It was immensely gratifying to see how Marissa had shot herself in the foot."Rissa, what do we do? Your dad and I already invested that one million, so there's no way we can cough it back up!" Mom said anxiously.Marissa scowled at me and hissed, "You useless bitch! You can't even catch a man's interest!"In response, I shrugged helplessly. "Well, he was originally interested in me, but after your slander, he decided you were more interesting. What can I do?"Rendered speechless at my rebuttal, Marissa could only scoff."Dad, Mom, don't worry. I'm Xander Lorne's girlfriend. With how rich he is, one million dollars is practically spare change to h

I remained unfazed at Marissa's words. In truth, the possibility that she might steal Xander from me had occurred to me long ago, so I had started planning for it. That was why I had deliberately made that social media post about loving seafood stew. In case she ever pretended to be me, this detail would be the perfect tell. However, she would faint every time she ate seafood stew, yet Xander never seemed to suspect it was an allergy and continued to feed her seafood stew every time. Had she never wondered why that was? What a fool she was."Rissa, I'm not sure I understand what you're implying. He's your online boyfriend, is he not? What does he have to do with me? Or could it be that he was actually my online boyfriend, and you stole him from me, hmm?" I asked her with feigned confusion.A mix of emotions played across her face as she stared at me for a moment. At last, she snapped mockingly, "As if! There's no way your online boyfriend was anything but a trashy punk! Xander is

Looking down at me with an adoring expression, Xander gently ruffled my hair."What, are you angry? Actually, I knew Marissa wasn't you the moment I laid eyes on her. I was just wondering what she was up to, and that's why I never said anything," he explained earnestly."Then what did you do to her these past two weeks? Why does she look so miserable?"Xander raised a brow and answered, "It's her own fault for taking your place and bullying you. I just taught her a little lesson by triggering her allergies… What, maybe four or five times? Oh, and I had her kneeling in a church to pray for me for two hours every day. Oh, the things she would do to curry favor with me."Upon hearing this, I lifted my gaze to his. It seemed Marissa's resolve to marry into a prestigious family was quite strong. She would even risk her life rather than give up her act.Xander leaned down to whisper in my ear. "So, will I get a reward for doing so well?" My lips quirked into a smile before I pressed a

I turned my head away, only to see Marissa sitting beside Xander.Despite it only being two weeks since I last saw her, she looked like she had lost a significant amount of weight. Her complexion was also sickly pale. She scanned me with excitement in her gaze, but when she didn't see any wounds on me, a burning rage flared to life in her eyes.I chuckled coldly before glancing at Gordon. "Gordon, go cut me some fruit.""Got it. Right away."Shooting me a sycophantic smile, Gordon hurried off to do as told.Marissa's face paled even further at that, and she stared at me in disbelief."Yelena, come with me."She stood up. After shooting Xander a wary look, she headed for her room.I followed her.The instant the door shut behind us, Marissa fixed me with a venomous glare before yanking my sleeves up. When she saw the pale, smooth skin, she shook her head in denial."No, that's impossible! Why didn't Gordon beat you up? And he even obediently took orders from you!"I didn't r
