Chapter 5

Nate’s POV

I dropped the flowers I came with at Layla late dad tomb and gave her some space to talk with her father, I am not good in words and I really don’t know how to console her right now, I know how well she misses her father but too bad she never for once grew some feelings for me.

I know she agreed to the marriage with me because it was her father dying wish.  I notice the sadness in her eyes, oh God what should I do? Should I caress her hair and speak with her, no that will look a little bit off, what if I hug her from behind and promise her I will always protect her no matter what, even if it’s a one sided love, damn it, none of these even make sense but I need to say something, I will be a bad husband if I don’t mostly now she caught me staring at her.

 “Hey, are you okay?” Was the only sentence that came out from my mouth.

“Yeah.”She replied, how is she this cold? Just yeah? I expected a sweet conversation at least, anyway I placed a faint smile on my face and inquired from her, “Should we get going?”

“Yeah.” She gave a faint answer. Why can’t she just show a little care, I mean it’s not that hard.

We entered the car and I drove on a regular speed and decided to ask about her work to break the silence and she cleared her throat before saying, “well, it has been fine recently.” I expected her to ask about mine as well, like the last operation I did but she didn’t, I guess she doesn’t want to talk to me so let me respect her privacy, “Okay.” I said and the silence took over again immediately she said,”Uhmm…yeah”

Immediately we got home, she rushed down from the car and walked straight to her room, it was like she wanted to be away from me, am I a plague or what? I decided we have our separate rooms after our marriage because I am scared I might end up touching her which I don’t want because I am also respecting her wish since she is waiting for someone else, the one she truly loves.

I got a call from the hospital I work for, it is called The General Hospital, “Hello Doc Nate, we have an emergency.”

“Okay, I will be there in ten.” I ended the phone call and dashed out from my room, I wanted to tell Layla I will be leaving but she sounds happy talking on phone with her friend, I guess I should just leave without telling her.

I arrived at the hospital and one of the nurse practitioners named Ella rushed to me saying “Doctor, thank goodness you are here, the patient needs an emergency heart surgery.”

“I am here now and everything will be fine, get the patient ready and also I need four perioperative nurse and you in the operating theatre right now.”

“Yes doc.” She left and I walked to my office to change into a surgical gown with bouffant-style cap to cover my hair, a face mask as well, latex gloves and clog-like rubber theatre shoes.

I looked at my gifted hands and checked the case file, my office door got opened and Ella said to me, “Doctor Nate, everything is ready.”

“What about the pre-registration, blood work, EKG urinalysis, chest X-ray?”

“Everything has been done, this is the chest X-ray.” She passed it to me and I looked at it properly.

“Okay let’s go, I hope you have given the patient the general anesthesia?”

“Yes doc.”

“Good, you are doing a great job.”

“Thank you very much doc.”

I entered the theatre room and everyone got ready and as usual I introduced myself again, “My name is Nate Daniel, I will be operation on patient B and I assure you it will be a success if you all follow my instructions so let’s begin, we are either spending at least three hours here or at most six hours, pass me the scalpel.” They obeyed at once.

“I will be making a cut in his chest close to 8-10 inches.” I added and I successfully made the cut through the patient’s breastbone to expose the heart and seeing it’s visible, I connected the patient to a heart-lung bypass machine. This process is to make it easy for me to operate when the blood is been moved from the heart. After which I will make use of a healthy vein or artery to make a new part around the blocked artery and the process continues.

Four hours later, I was done and I allowed the perioperative nurse to stitch up the patient while I took my leave, the nurses were happy that the surgery was a success seeing everything is stable. I changed into my casual outfit and sat at my office taking a look at my wife photo on my phone and also conscious of time as well when an unexpected guest came in.

 “Chloe!!” I called in surprise as I stood on my feet and she smiled saying, “Hello Nate, long time no see.”

Well Chloe was once my girlfriend in school days, I really do not have genuine feelings for her, I know so many girls were into me in school and Chloe was one of them but I take her as a friend because I actually got eyes for Layla. I am surprised that Layla turns out different from the other girls who doesn’t even have a thing for me but she has always been good to me.

I got drunk at prom and had a high fever as well, I thought Layla was the one who helped me but I never knew it was Chloe, I regretted the kiss because I wanted it with Layla and I got pressured by my friends saying I should give it a short with Chloe but we ended up breaking up in order to pursue our dreams.

“What are you doing here?”

“Are you not happy to see me? Well if you are not, you need to learn it now,because you are going to be seeing more of me.”

Should I tell her I’m married?
