Chapter 2

Year on Year
I push through them, heading for the bathroom to freshen up.

Zara, persistent as ever, tugged at my sleeve, refusing to let me slip away. "Spell it out for me! You're clutching the cash! If you didn't lie to me, then where did all my son’s money go?"

I gave a nonchalant shrug, eyeing her with bewilderment. "I haven't touched a single dime in the account. How would I know?"

I wrestled my sleeve from her grip and hurried into the bathroom.

No sooner had I squeezed out the toothpaste than Zara started hammering on the door. The pounding was so loud I could feel my temples pulsing.

I swung open the door to find Zara triumphantly holding a box of my jewelry.

"And you claim you didn't blow Josh's cash! Take a look at these! Isn't each piece worth a fortune?"

Paul backed her up, saying, "Without Josh's help, could your paycheck ever cover such luxurious jewelry?

"Josh's sister is your sister, too. Why not hawk a few pieces and help Jasmine out?"

I glanced at the necklace, once pristine, now a tangle of fragments in their hands. Annoyance flared within me, and I snatched my belongings back.

"Who said you could rummage through my stuff?! My mom got these for me. I have no reason to sell them!"

Zara's reaction was visceral. She clutched my arm, dragging me toward the bedroom. "You've got some nerve! Your bedroom's overflowing with your handbags and dresses!

"Why doesn't Josh have a single decent outfit if you haven't blown through all his cash?!"

How was it that a wardrobe shared equally between us suddenly meant he was the one being shortchanged?

I stood my ground, giving her an icy stare.

"I bought that with my own money, and I'll say it once again: I haven't touched a dime of his paycheck!"

Josh let out a weary sigh, stepping in once again to smooth things over. "Chloe hasn't treated me like that. Don't make things hard for her."

He seemed genuinely concerned for me, proposing a compromise.

"Babe, if we can't scrape together 7,500 dollars, let's go with 4,500. I'll ask some friends to chip in for the rest.

"We'll face this challenge together, and I'll figure out a way to cover the future medical bills."

Jasmine, hearing that, dabbed at her eyes, looking forlorn. "Josh, if Chloe isn't on board, let's not force it, okay? Let's not spoil our good vibes over this."

Josh quickly comforted her with a reassuring pat on the shoulder, promising he would not leave her in the lurch.

Zara, too, held her hand sympathetically, then shot me a look and burst into a dramatic sob.

"My poor, poor son! Even now, he's trying to scrape together some money for Jasmine. He even has to grovel..."

She was cut off mid-sentence by Josh's stern warning. "Mom, that's enough!"

Zara huffed twice but held her tongue.

Paul, seeing her back down, looked annoyed.

"How many times do I have to say it? You can't let her walk all over you. Give a woman an inch, and she'll take a mile!"

He let out a disdainful snort. "Just look at her now, holding back the money that could save Jasmine's life!"

Josh, hearing that, quickly glanced at me, then chastised Paul. "Dad, this is between Chloe and me. You can't just keep trying to fix things the old-fashioned way."

Paul looked taken aback and seemed about to add something else.

Josh quickly cut in, turning to me, and said, "So, we're in agreement for now, Chloe. Are you okay with that?"

Zara turned away, repeating to herself like a mantra. "Every cloud has a silver lining. Every cloud has a silver lining."

Paul shot me a sideways glare, his face a picture of reluctance.

"We can't put off our sister's treatment. It's serious business," I said.

Hearing my words, Josh let out a relieved sigh, and the tension in Paul and Zara's faces eased a bit.

Even Jasmine looked up, her eyes wide with surprise.

With no one objecting, I went on. "Josh's account is down to its last dollar, and I don't have 4,500 dollars on me.

"However, I've got connections at the bank. If you want, I can hook you up with a loan."

With all three of them speechless, I slowly pocketed my phone."I expect a full-blown apology online tonight, and let's not forget, I want double the damages. Every last cent."Zara balked at the idea. "How could we possibly afford that?"They clearly needed a reality check, so I laid out my Plan B."No compensation? Fine by me. However, you're giving me that apology, no matter what."Before Zara could even think of bargaining, I was already on the phone with my lawyer."Mr. Smith, you confirmed that the cash Josh has been funneling to his mistress and kid counts as shared marital assets, right?"I had him on speaker, and his reply was loud and clear. "That's correct, Ms. Foster. You're entitled to reclaim those funds, and if they refuse, we can hit them with a court order."After thanking him, I turned to Jasmine, who had gone pale, and pressed on."Those who end up on the enforcement list are basically blacklisted, aren't they? And their kids..."The mention of his son fina

"I genuinely thought of you as family, yet you treated me like a fool."Did you really think I'd stand here without proof? I know all about Josh buying her a car, getting baby supplies, and even mortgaging our property to buy her a house!"Zara was in a panic then. She just wanted a grandson. She treated her son's mistress like a goddaughter, thinking it would not raise eyebrows. She assumed Josh was on the same page, but to her shock, he was ready to buy Jasmine a house. She nudged her silent son, desperate for his denial."Son, is what she's saying true?"I pointed at Josh's shifty eyes and let out an icy laugh. "Is that even a question? You just promised to make a public apology and pay me back double. Time to cough it up."Alright, now that it's clear I haven't taken a dime of his money and have actually been the one paying out, are you all happy?"I did not even glance at Zara's pale face as I pressed her. "Come on, keep your word. Everyone's watching. You wouldn't want t

I gave her a knowing look, my smile not quite reaching my eyes."My car? I paid for that beauty myself. However, Jasmine's shiny new ride? Now, that's a mystery."They had rolled up in style, making sure to park the sleek Audi just out of sight. However, I caught a glimpse of it. The car had to be worth at least 75,000 dollars, right?Zara froze like she had just remembered something important, and quickly tried to steer the conversation elsewhere."And this? Over 700 bucks on clothes? My son wouldn't be caught dead in a dress, would he?"Her words hung in the air as she stopped short, a realization dawning on her.I nodded slowly, playing along with her sudden insight."Absolutely! The 750-dollar dress your darling daughter is flaunting? I'd say that's modestly upscale."Zara's lips were a tight line, her eyes darting guiltily the more she read. The statement laid it out plain as day: a 150-dollar spree at a maternity and baby store.Josh and I were not expecting. So, why t

As everyone crowded around, I cracked a smile and started flipping through the ledger myself. We had barely gotten through this month's entries when everyone froze."How is it that this month's paycheck just came in and it's already gone?"Zara zeroed in on a line item, demanding answers. "The money just hit the account, and it's already used up. Who else could've been using Josh's money but you?"I whipped out my phone and pulled up PayPal."Mom, you've got it all wrong. This is obviously a PayPal transaction. I only link my own card to PayPal. I have never linked to Josh's. So how could it have been me?"I had Zara stumped with that one.The crowd was scratching their heads, too. Finally, Jasmine broke the silence. "Chloe, don't tell me you whipped up a fake ledger just to throw us off?"Zara's eyes widened as she got it, and she blurted out loud and clear. "Print it out again. This has got to be some cooked-up ledger you made!"The crowd around us buzzed with speculation.

I clicked through to the blogger's profile and saw her latest post, hot on the heels of her last viral sensation.[Our family's savings are gone, thanks to the daughter-in-law. Should we stop our daughter's medical treatment?]My name and personal details were splashed all over it.I inhaled sharply and flicked a screenshot over to Zara.[This is you, isn't it? Your post is practically begging for a cyber mob. You know I could sue you for this.]Zara was quiet for a bit, then hit me with a voice message."After leeching off my son's cash, you still have the nerve to threaten me with a lawsuit?"If my girl gets worse because we're broke, I'll drag you to court, you little snake!"The mention of money reignited my anger.[How many times do I have to tell you? I didn't touch your son's money!]Zara shot back instantly."It's prime time for your brother to settle down. Who knows how much you've forked over for his house?"Talk is cheap. Show me the proof. Are you brave enough t

Zara was livid; her eyebrows shot up as she stomped and ranted."You've bled my son dry! And now you want him to rack up debt instead of coughing it up? Over my dead body!"Her relentless nagging wore me out. I stormed back to the bedroom and dug out Josh's card."If you really think I'm the one who spent it all, here, take the card back."Under Zara's doubtful gaze, I shoved the card back into Josh's hands with force."You know better than anyone if I've touched the money in there. I won't take the fall for this."Josh froze, then awkwardly looked away, pushing the card back to me. "Honey, I trust you with the money more than anyone."Then, he turned to Paul and Zara, trying to calm the waters with a peacemaker's tone."Mom, Dad, we're family. Why are we splitting hairs over money like we're strangers? I believe in Chloe. She's not the type to blow cash without thinking."Let's head home. Chloe and I will figure out the treatment costs."Josh's voice had a hint of alliance w
