The answer came on a Wednesday morning.

There was no warning.

No dramatic knock at the door.

No time for Jack to prepare himself for what he was about to hear.

His phone rang while he was standing in the kitchen making coffee. Lily was sitting on the floor nearby, pulling plastic containers out of the bottom cabinet while Lela was in the living room working through her morning exercises.

Jack glanced at the screen.

His expression changed.

Lela noticed immediately.

"Who is it?"

"Command."

  • Decisions I made    A House Full of Little Things

The first thing Lela noticed was the silence. Not the peaceful kind of silence she'd imagined when she and Jack had talked about bringing the twins home. This was the kind that came after a long night, when the babies had finally settled, Lily was still asleep, and the entire house seemed to be holding its breath. She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. It was barely six in the morning. She had slept in pieces. An hour here, forty minutes there, and perhaps another stretch she couldn't quite remember. Every time one of the girls made a noise, she woke. Every time Jack got up, she opened her eyes to make sure he was okay. And every time the house went quiet, she found herself listening for the next sound.Motherhood had apparently turned her into a person who could hear a newborn breathe from three rooms away. She smiled to herself. Then she heard a soft voice.“Daddy?”Lela turned toward the doorway.Jack appeared with Sophia tucked securely against his chest. His hair was sticking up

  • Decisions I made    The First Morning

Lela woke to someone whispering. At first, she couldn't tell where she was. The room was dim, the curtains letting in only a thin line of morning sunlight, and her body felt as though it had been awake for days. Then she heard it again.“Come on, sweetheart. You can do this.”Jack.She turned her head toward the doorway and found him standing beside the bassinet, wearing the same T-shirt he'd worn the night before. His hair was a mess, his eyes were tired, and he held Isabella against his chest.Lela smiled faintly.“Are you giving her a pep talk?”Jack glanced over his shoulder. “Absolutely.”“Is it working?”“She's considering my argument.”Isabella made a tiny squeaking noise.“That's a no,” Lela whispered.“She's a tough negotiator.”He looked down at their daughter, gently supporting her head. Isabella's eyes were barely open, her little mouth moving as she settled against him. Jack brushed one finger along her back.“She woke up a little while ago,” he explained. “I changed her,

  • Decisions I made    Home At Last

The phone rang at 7:18 on Monday morning.Lela was already awake. She had barely slept the night before, not because anything was wrong, but because her mind kept returning to the same thought.Maybe today.Maybe today they would finally bring their daughters home.Jack was sitting beside her bed, looking through the latest photographs of Sophia and Isabella. When the phone rang, they both looked at the screen. The neonatal unit.Lela grabbed his hand.“Answer it.”Jack accepted the call.“Good morning. This is Jack Sullivan.”“Good morning, Mr. Sullivan. It's Nurse Melissa. I wanted to let you know that we've had another encouraging night with the girls. The medical team has reviewed their progress, and we'd like to speak with you both this morning about discharge planning.”Lela stopped breathing for a moment.Jack looked at her.“Are you saying they're ready?”“We're preparing for that possibility. The team needs to complete the final assessments and go through the discharge instru

  • Decisions I made    Two Steps Forward

Lela woke to her phone vibrating against the bedside table. She reached for it and squinted at the screen.A message from Paul.Good morning. Lily wants to know if the babies are coming home today. I told her we would ask. Also, your mother is making breakfast. Don't argue with her about eating.Lela smiled. She typed back.Good morning. Tell Lily we're going to see what the doctors say. And tell Mom I promise to eat.A second message arrived almost immediately. She says promises don't count unless you eat the eggs.Lela laughed.Jack stirred in the chair beside her.“What?”“My father is negotiating breakfast.”“Should I be concerned?”“Apparently, I'm not allowed to leave the hospital until I eat eggs.”Jack stretched, rubbing the back of his neck.“Sounds reasonable.”“Traitor.”He grinned and stood, coming to her bedside.“Good morning, beautiful.”“Good morning.”“How are you feeling?”“Pretty good. Tired, but better than yesterday.”He checked that her pillows were positioned co

  • Decisions I made    The First Taste of Home

The first thing Lela heard that morning was Jack laughing. Not the quiet chuckle he sometimes gave when he read something on his phone. Not the tired laugh he used when he was trying to make light of a difficult day.A genuine laugh. She opened one eye and looked toward the chair beside her bed.Jack was sitting with his phone pressed to his ear, his shoulders shaking as he tried to keep his voice down.“No, Paul. I am not installing a security system around the nursery.”A pause.“Because they're babies.”Another pause.“Dad, you cannot put cameras in every corner of the house.”Lela smiled beneath her blanket.Jack glanced over and caught her watching him.He mouthed, Your father. She raised her eyebrows. He turned away again.“No, I don't need motion sensors on the bassinets. I need you to stop shopping online.”Lela started laughing.Jack looked back at her and shook his head.“She's awake,” he told Paul. “I'll call you back.”He ended the call and set his phone down.“Good mornin

  • Decisions I made    The Day Everything Felt Different

Lela woke the next morning to an unfamiliar sound. For several seconds, she couldn't identify it. It was soft and rhythmic, almost like someone tapping a fingernail against glass. She opened her eyes, turned her head toward the window, and realized the rain had returned. Then she noticed Jack wasn't in the chair beside her.Her heart gave a small, instinctive jump before she remembered the conversation they'd had the previous morning. He had promised not to leave her out of important updates, and she had promised to stop assuming that every moment apart meant something was wrong.Still, she reached for her phone. There was a message waiting.Morning, sweetheart. I went to check on the girls while you were sleeping. They had a quiet night, and both are stable. Sophia's feeding is still being monitored, and Isabella is still working on keeping her temperature steady. No emergencies. I wanted you to get some rest. I'll be back in a few minutes, and then we'll go together.Lela read it tw

  • Decisions I made    Thursday Night

Thursday nights were usually predictable. Chris would have another dinner meeting with clients, another networking event, or another reason he couldn't be home. Over the years, I had stopped asking questions. Sometimes the meetings were legitimate, sometimes they weren't, and sometimes I simply did

  • Decisions I made    The Start

Ten years ago, my husband and I started having problems in our marriage. At first, they were the kind of problems that many couples face—arguments about money, stress from everyday life, and disagreements about priorities. We kept telling ourselves that things would get better, that we were just go

  • Decisions I made    The message

We had barely made it twenty feet into the mall before Mom was already pulling dresses off racks."Mom.""What?""We've been here two minutes.""And?""You already have six dresses."She looked down at the armful of clothes she was carrying."I do.""That's a problem.""No, it's called being prepar

  • Decisions I made    Questions

"Where is Jack taking you for dinner?" Mom asked as we walked toward the mall entrance.I smiled."Pier W."Mom stopped so fast I nearly walked right into her."What?"I laughed."Pier W."She just stood there staring at me."The Pier W?""Yes, Mom."For a moment she didn't say anything. Then she g
