Chapter 1

Finn's POV

I threw the door open. The bang was loud enough to make all four people on the couch turn around.

Vivian Clark froze with her wineglass halfway to her lips, while the smile on my best friend Mike Crain's face froze.

Only my girlfriend, Wanda Beckham, didn't seem the least bit nervous. She got to her feet. "Finn, you've always been too full of yourself. Everett just wanted to take you down a notch. He didn't mean any harm."

My throat felt as dry as if I'd swallowed gravel. "Wanda, you studied law too! You know that's defamation! He made that whole thing up just to humiliate me!"

Wanda frowned. "The video's already been taken down. What more do you want?"

I remembered the day Wanda passed the bar exam.

She'd hugged me outside the law firm and promised me with absolute sincerity, "Finn, if anyone ever bullies you or hurts you, I'll make sure they pay for it."

I turned to Mike and stared him straight in the eye. "Mike, is that what you think too?"

He looked away. "Finn, we're all friends here. There's no need to make things ugly."

"Friends? Since when did you become friends with him?"

Mike hesitated before letting out a sigh. "Since the last time we all hung out."

He glanced at me. "Look, Finn, you're a good friend, but you can be pretty self-centered sometimes. Everett's right. You can't expect everything to be about you."

I almost laughed.

Two years ago, Mike's startup had gone under, leaving him drowning in debt. He'd barely had enough money to pay his rent.

I'd lent him all my savings and everything I'd earned from my projects to help him get back on his feet. I'd been there for him through the worst of it.

Back then, he'd clapped me on the shoulder, his voice thick with emotion. "If anyone ever messes with my best friend, they'll have to go through me first."

Vivian came over and reached out to give my shoulder a playful punch, just like she used to. I stepped out of the way.

Her hand stopped in midair, and her face fell. "Finn Campbell, that's enough."

I looked at her. When she'd failed her SAT, I'd helped her reorganize her notes and spent hours going through practice questions with her, one at a time.

When her mother got sick while she was studying for her retakes, I'd taken care of her mother at the hospital, even staying up all night by her bedside so Vivian could focus on her exams.

I let out a quiet laugh. "Fine."

I nodded, my voice barely audible. "I get it now."

Then I turned and opened the door.

Wanda called after me. "Finn, this will all blow over once people lose interest in the video. Why do you have to make such a big deal out of it?"

I ignored her, hurried downstairs, and started my car. But I'd barely pulled onto the road when my phone started blowing up.

A high-definition version of the video had been posted on the front page of the city's biggest online forum. My face and name were there for everyone to see.

HR called sooner than I'd expected. "Mr. Campbell, we suggest you resign."

I tried to explain, but the person on the other end cut me off. "Whatever the circumstances, this has damaged the company's reputation. We could be asking you for compensation, but we're not."

I hung up and drove back to my apartment. My landlord was waiting outside. The moment he saw me, he looked at me like I had the plague.

"Get your stuff and move out! With everything people are saying about you, who's going to want to rent this place after you?"

Before I could even respond, he threw my suitcases out the door. "Now get lost!"

Rainwater ran down my hair and slipped beneath my collar, sending a chill through me.

That night, I tried over and over to explain online that the video was an AI-generated fake. But all I got in return was a flood of vile comments.

I smoked half a pack of cigarettes, leaving my car's ashtray overflowing with cigarette butts.

Then my phone buzzed with a message from Wanda.

"Finn, where are you? It's pouring out there. Don't stay out in the rain. You'll get sick. I've already spoken to Everett about what he did. As long as you agree to let it go, we can put this whole thing behind us."

I stared at the screen, my grip tightening around the phone until my knuckles turned white. 20 million views.

I'd lost my job, my apartment, and my reputation. And she thought we could just "put this whole thing behind us".

My phone buzzed again.

The message read, "Finn Campbell, answer me. Don't make me worry about you."

Finn's POVI showed up for the trial, but I barely said a word in court. Nathaniel stated all the facts for me. Once the chain of evidence was complete and every lie laid bare, Vivian, Mike, and Everett stood in the defendant’s dock, no longer as arrogant as they once were.Vivian kept her head down, unable to meet my eyes. Mike sobbed uncontrollably, his face twisted as he kept saying how sorry he was. Everett was still trying to blame everything on Wanda, claiming she'd put him up to it.Wanda sat in the gallery, her face dark with anger. She didn't say a word. The court handed down its verdict.Vivian was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Mike got a year. Everett got two years. Wanda avoided prison, but her law license was revoked. She was also ordered to compensate me for the emotional distress she'd caused and issue a public apology for the damage she'd done to my reputation.I was satisfied with the outcome. After the trial, I walked out of the courthouse. Wanda hurried

Third-Person POVVivian had been arrested. Mike had been called in for questioning. Everett had been stopped at the airport while trying to leave. One piece of bad news after another, and Wanda's life was falling apart. Her career was the first thing to suffer. One of the senior partners at her law firm called her into his office. "Wanda, what is this?"He tossed a printout of an online forum post onto the desk in front of her. The title read, "Prominent Female Attorney Teams Up With Childhood Friend to Ruin Boyfriend's Life. Leaked Chats Expose Everything!"The post included not only the awful things she'd said in the private dining room but also messages proving that Everett had been playing her for a fool."Wanda, you've been a lawyer for years. You should know how important professional ethics and personal integrity are."One of your clients just called and demanded that you be taken off their case. They said they couldn't trust someone who'd sell out her own boyfriend to h

Finn's POVThat afternoon, I'd just left Nathaniel's law firm when someone I recognized came rushing out from behind a flower bed at the corner. Before I could react, he grabbed my arm. "Finn! I've been looking everywhere for you!"Mike practically lunged at me, his voice cracking. I didn't push him away or make a scene. I just stopped and looked down at his hand gripping my sleeve. He was still wearing the black friendship bracelet we'd bought together. It was old and worn now."Let go," I said evenly.Mike froze, clearly caught off guard by my reaction. In his mind, I was still the same fool who'd always covered for him without a second thought and lent him money without ever asking for it back.Still, he released my arm and pulled a stack of crumpled pages from his bag. "Finn, I'm sorry. I know I messed up. I really do..."He tried to shove the pages into my hands."So, you came to apologize?" I took them without opening them."Yes! Finn, please, just hear me out." Third-Person POVThe police moved faster than Finn had expected. Just five days after opening the investigation, they arrested Vivian at her home.Apparently, she'd been playing an online game when they showed up. She'd even been bragging to her teammates."What's there to worry about? It's just a video. You seriously think that idiot Finn can get me thrown in jail? Please. I know what I'm doing. I deleted everything. There's no way anyone's finding a trace of it."But when the officers showed her the original files they'd recovered from the cloud servers, she was speechless. All the footage and project files she'd been so sure were gone for good had been recovered. So had her conversations with Everett. And now it was all evidence against her.Even in the interrogation room, Vivian kept making excuses. "Officer, it was just a prank! We were only messing around! Besides, Finn and I have known each other since we were kids. Why would I want to hurt him? I was just… I was trying to

Finn's POVWhile I was busy preparing for the lawsuit, I heard some news about my family. Not from them, though. I found out through someone else.I'd gone to the courthouse that day to file some additional paperwork when I ran into an old classmate who worked for the government."Finn Campbell? Hey... How've you been holding up?" He seemed to have trouble meeting my eyes."Pretty good. Why?""Well... I heard your brother Graham got the results of his background check."That caught my attention, though I didn't let it show. "Oh, really?""Yeah... Apparently, he didn't pass. They haven't said exactly why, but word is that someone in his family is involved in a major online scandal and a criminal investigation."I heard the police opened a case over that video of you. And apparently, your brother's been linked to some suspicious money transfers too..."My old classmate lowered his voice. "Finn, don't take it too hard. Nobody saw this coming."I nodded and gave him a polite smil

Finn's POVThe next day, I went to Nathaniel Cross' law firm, just as we'd arranged.Nathaniel had been a year ahead of me in college and had since made a name for himself as an attorney. He looked taken aback when he saw me. "Finn, you..."I was probably a lot calmer than he'd expected. I certainly didn't look like someone who'd just been dragged through the mud online, abandoned by his family, and betrayed by his girlfriend."I've long heard of your reputation, Nathaniel." I sat down and pulled a USB drive and a thick stack of printed messages from my bag. "Here's all the evidence I've gathered."Nathaniel took the documents and started going through them. The more he read, the deeper his frown grew. "Vivian Clark... She's your childhood friend, right? And Mike Crain is your best friend? Then there's this Everett guy..."He looked up at me, his expression serious. "What about your girlfriend, Wanda Beckham? How was she involved?""She was the last straw," I said calmly. "She
