Chapter 3

مؤلف: Cheesie
There were three days left before my departure.

When I returned from work, I found five black garbage bags piled outside the apartment.

One of them hadn't been tied properly. The edge of a familiar notebook was sticking out.

I bent down and pulled it free, only to discover that the bags were filled with my belongings. There were old hunting maps, training certificates, a bone whistle, and the wrist guards my grandmother had made for me before she passed away.

Everything had been stuffed together carelessly. Many of the books had pages that were already crumpled beyond recognition.

I pushed open the door.

Mom was clearing out the cardboard boxes that belonged to me on the balcony.

"Why are my things outside?"

Without turning around, Mom answered, "Kalista is having her marking ceremony soon. Members of the Frostfang Pack will be coming over in three days. Our new home needs to look presentable. Those old books and notebooks of yours aren't useful anyway, so I figured we might as well get rid of them."

I stood where I was.

"Those are my things."

Dad frowned at me.

"You're always out on night patrol. What's the point of keeping so many things in our new home and taking up space? Kalista has a lot to prepare for her marking ceremony. The balcony needs to be cleared first so she can use it."

Kalista came out of her room with a new set of jewelry.

When she saw the garbage bags outside the door, she immediately put on a guilty expression.

"Blair, don't blame them. How about I move my things back into my room? It'll be a little crowded, but I don't mind."

Mom immediately stopped her while looking heartbroken.

"This is one of the most important events of your life. I won't let you suffer at a time like this."

Then she turned to face me.

"Blair has always been able to endure hardship. It doesn't matter where her things are. She won't mind."

I didn't argue anymore.

I simply walked out into the hallway and began searching through the garbage bags one by one.

The document folder I needed to report for duty at the northern outpost was gone.

Inside were my pack-seal certification, medical examination report, and transfer order signed by the captain of the guard.

If even one of those documents was missing, I wouldn't be able to report on time.

I asked Mom, "Where's the brown paper folder from the desk drawer?"

She thought for a long time.

"What paper folder?"

Keane was sitting on the sofa while playing a game.

Without even looking up, he said, "The one with a bunch of papers inside? I think I saw it when I brought some stuff to the recycling station to sell this afternoon."

I spun around and raised my voice.

"Where did you sell it?"

He was startled by my tone for a moment, but he quickly became defensive again.

"The recycling station nearby. I didn't think it was anything important, so I sold it with everything else."

I ran downstairs. It was raining outside.

The owner of the recycling station was loading bundles of cardboard onto a truck.

Ignoring the filthy water on the ground, I dropped to my knees and began digging through the piles of discarded paper.

The edges of cardboard boxes sliced open the back of my hands, and broken glass pierced my palm.

Blood mixed with rainwater and dripped onto the waterlogged pages.

I had no idea how long I searched. Finally, at the very bottom of the pile, I found the document folder.

The seal had already split open. One corner of my medical report was soaked. The pack seal had blurred from the dirty water.

But thankfully, I had found it, and it could still be used.

I clutched the folder to my chest and ran home. I was soaked and filthy.

The living room was already filled with things Kalista needed for her marking ceremony, including jewelry, clothes, and pack contracts.

My parents were gathered around Kalista and discussing everything she needed to remember. No one noticed the blood on my hands.

Kalista was the first to see the document folder in my arms.

"Blair, did you find it?"

I nodded.

Mom's expression darkened.

"You found it, didn't you? Then stop walking around with that sour expression on your face. When the Frostfang Pack comes here for Kalista's marking ceremony, don't go wandering around the living room looking filthy like this."

I lowered my gaze to my palm, where blood was still slowly seeping from the wound.

Suddenly, I recalled the year I had been accepted into the guard. I had wanted to buy a decent tactical backpack, but Mom had shaken her head and told me that the family had three pups to raise and wasn't wealthy. We needed to save money.

In the end, she gave me one of Kalista's old backpacks. The zipper was half broken, and the straps were nearly torn through.

Afraid that it would fall apart completely, I spent an entire night repairing it until it was sturdy enough to use. After that, wanting to reduce the burden on my family, I never asked Mom for anything again.

Now, two brand-new backpacks sat beside Kalista's feet. Their price tags were still attached. Each one was expensive.

Kalista followed my gaze and seemed to suddenly recall something.

"Blair, my white suitcase has gathered some dust, and I'll need it later. Remember to wipe it clean for me. Use a soft cloth so you don't scratch it. It's expensive."

Dad stood in the middle of the living room and pointed at my two remaining cardboard boxes.

"If you still want those, move them out to the balcony. Don't leave them in the room where they're in everyone's way."

I looked at the boxes and boxes of things that belonged to Kalista. Then I looked at the documents in my arms, which had nearly been sold as scrap paper.

I couldn't help but chuckle.

That night, I used tape to seal the document folder. I then pulled the old backpack with the broken zipper out of one of my cardboard boxes.

I didn't clean Kalista's dusty suitcase.

For once, I wanted to be selfish.

Quietly, I packed my clothes into the old backpack, one piece at a time.

In three days, I would leave this huge home I had earned through risking my life and move out for good.

I officially began my new position at City Hall.My new residence wasn't large. It had two bedrooms and a living room and there was a south-facing terrace where I could see the bright moon at night.I personally chose my bed, desk, and curtains. I placed the moonstone lamp I had used for so many years next to the window. The second bedroom became my study. I hung a photo of my team on the wall.In the photo, I stood in the middle and was surrounded by everyone while smiling brightly. This time, the photo had been taken by a professional photographer. On the day I moved in, my colleagues arrived with roasted meat and fresh berries to celebrate with me.One of the logistics staff made a special trip over to cook for everyone.During the past five years of closed deployment, she had always treated me kindly. After learning that I was allergic to shellfish, she had even written it down in a notebook because she was afraid she might accidentally give me something that would make me

Five years later, I had successfully completed the closed deployment.I had worked diligently and made numerous contributions. I had single-handedly stopped rogue infiltration attempts at the outpost several times.Due to my accomplishments, I was promoted and was about to begin working at Werewolf City Hall.A report praising my achievements appeared on the screen while my family was having dinner in the old house. On the screen was a live broadcast of my appointment ceremony. I stood at the far right of my team in a neat official guard uniform.Mom recognized me immediately. The fork in her hand fell to the floor. She stood up and moved so close to the screen that she was nearly pressed against it.Five years had passed. My hair was cut short, and my shoulders and back were straight. My face was filled with determination and resolve. There was no longer any trace of the cautious, people-pleaser I had once been.During an interview, a reporter asked me, "I've heard that the co

Thirty days later, my family moved back into the old house, a cramped 600-square-foot space marked by a narrow hallway and walls heavily stained with dampness.Keane's belongings could only be squeezed into a corner of the living room. Kalista had to keep her clothes in an old wooden chest.Every day, Mom went to clean the tiny place I used to rent. She always had the strange feeling that I was still there, and that I hadn't really left.Every so often, she sent me a message.[Blair, we tore down the walk-in closet.][We bought you a bed and a desk.][Your room is still empty. No one has moved into it.][When are you coming back to see it?]Every message showed a single gray tick at the end.My phone had long been deactivated. The mind link was still completely silent. It was like a stone wall through which nothing could pass.Dad quit smoking and drinking. Mom stopped buying expensive jewelry. Kalista began selling the clothes she had packed into boxes, one piece at a time.

Mom found a forgotten document folder behind one of the cabinets on the balcony.Inside were renovation sketches I had drawn who knew how many years ago.Back then, our family had still been crammed into our old house.I had carefully written stuff on the drawings.[Mom and Dad will have the master bedroom. This one will have an attached bathroom.][Kalista is sensitive to noise, so the south-facing room will be quieter for her.][Keane needs space to train, so his room should be larger too.]Finally, I had drawn a tiny smiling face next to the smallest room.[This one is for me. A bed and a desk will be enough.]There were several furniture order forms tucked beside the drawings. There was one for a cheap little wooden bed, one for a small desk to place by the window, and a moonstone lamp that gave off a warm yellow glow.It turned out I had been planning for this home long ago. No matter how much effort it took, I had always intended to earn it.They checked the records a

The following day, my parents went to my former guard station using the address provided by the captain. The captain received them, but the expression in his eyes remained unusually complicated. After a long silence, Mom could no longer hold back. She finally asked anxiously, "Where exactly did Blair go?"We're her parents. Can't you just tell us?"The captain shook his head."This was an opportunity she fought for herself."Under the werewolf confidentiality code, I cannot reveal the location. It doesn't matter who asks."After a brief pause, he forced a smile."You should be happy for her."She's exceptional. She is fully capable of handling this assignment. When this rotation ends, her record of service will be enough for the werewolf council to directly nominate her as a regional elder. She'll have a real voice within the entire werewolf hierarchy."Mom stared at him in shock."She's capable of doing work like that?"The captain looked at her."Why wouldn't she be?"

By the time the ceremony ended, it was nearly midnight.Mom had drunk quite a bit. The first thing she did after returning to the new apartment was send me a message.[Blair, are you done cleaning up?][There are still two boxes on the balcony. Remember to move them down to the basement when you come back.]The messages were sent, but there was no reply. After waiting for ten minutes, Mom's expression gradually darkened."Her attitude is getting worse and worse."Dad was removing the ceremonial sash he had worn earlier. He snorted. "Let her be."She earned this apartment through her achievements. She treasures it too much to stay away for long."Kalista was silent for a moment."Didn't Blair say she was staying with a friend for a few days?"Maybe she's still upset with us and doesn't want to come back yet."Mom rubbed her aching temples."She's so petty. We raised her all these years. What's wrong with checking her backpack?"Besides, didn't we later prove that she hadn'
