There he stood with the box of pizza in his hands. I heard Alec laughing and realization hit me. My excitement over food had made me run to the door without even asking for the money. Alec walked over with his wallet in hand and paid.

I walked towards the table and put the box down, then continued to get plates as Alec headed to get drinks from the fridge.

While we ate, we talked about random stuff like what was stressing us at the moment. Alec seemed quite off. He was not his very playful and cheerful self. He didn't state what exactly was bothering him when I inquired.
