Chapter 1

Synestra’s P.O.V.

“Miss Simmons, would you like to join us here in class?”  I was startled out of my daydream pulling my attention from the window I had been staring out of to see Mr. Finwick fuming as the rest of the class giggled.

“I’m sorry Mr. Finwick, what was the question?” I asked in my most innocent voice. I knew Mr. Finwick had never liked me. I often spaced out during class due to the combination of being bored out of my mind with Calculus and sitting right next to the window.

“I asked you to solve for the value of X.” Mr. Finwick asked frustrated as the bell rang, saving me from any more math for the week. It was Friday afternoon and I could get out of here fast enough. I shoved my books in my bag and hurried to my locker.  As I slam the door shut and turn to leave I run right into Albert and Aly Finnigan. They are twins and my 2 best friends. Well my only friends really. The three of us have been friends for as long as I can remember. Aly was taller than me but still average height for a woman with thin build, fair skin and bouncy strawberry blonde curls. Albert was tall with an athletic build and short strawberry blonde hair. They both had the same emerald green eyes.

“Come on we have a surprise for you. An early birthday present. You are gonna love. I can’t wait for you to see.” Aly said with a huge grin on her face.

I followed them to the parking lot until we reached Albert’s cobalt blue Jeep. We rode home together every day. They lived just about 3 blocks from me and always offered me a ride home. When we reached the car Aly opened the passenger door and leaned in, opening the glove box to pulling out an envelope and pushing it towards me.

“Open it.” She said with a smile that reached all the way to her ears. Aly and I had always been competitive about our gift giving, always trying to one-up each other. This year was our 18th which meant taking it up another notch. I knew whatever was in this envelope had to be epic.

I ripped the envelope open and found a handmade card. The front of the card had his face. The man of my dreams. While other girls were losing their minds over the most recent K-pop stars all I cared about was Damien Raines.  He was the sexiest man I had ever laid eyes on.  Tall and muscular with ice blue eyes, jet black hair and covered in tattoos. I remembered the first time I had seen him in person; his god-like features had made me weak in the knees and it seemed as though I was the only person in the venue. Like the whole concert was just for me. It felt like his eyes could see into my soul. It was then I knew I had to see him again.

As I opened the card my hands began to shake. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. I was holding in my hand tickets to the upcoming Devil’s Night concert that was happening in just two days. I heard a loud pitched scream and it took me a few seconds to register that it had come from me. I was jumping and screaming and hugging Aly and Albert.

“Thank you Thank you Thank you!” I screamed “I can’t believe this. You guys are the best.”

“I still don’t know what you see in that band.” Albert complained. “You are just asking for trouble going to that concert. There is a reason people protest them. I heard they pick a girl at each show and sacrifice her.”

“Oh Albert do you know how crazy you sound? If girls were disappearing from every show don’t you think they would have been arrested by now? Quit being such a stick in the mud and let us have some fun.” Aly teased.

“Jealousy isn’t a good look on you Albert.” I joked

“Jealous? Ha!” Albert scoffed “They have no talent. Their music just sounds like loud noise. You couldn’t pay me to listen to it.”

“Well it’s good to know you won’t be missing anything while you are at home and we are at the concert.” Aly said, sticking her tongue out at her brother.

We all hopped in the Jeep and pretty soon we were pulling into my driveway. I thanked them again before getting out of the car and running inside. I bounded up the stairs and fell back onto my bed.  I looked around at my walls. All of them were plastered with posters of Damien Raines and Devil’s Night. It still didn’t feel real. In just two days I would be standing just mere feet away from him and something told me this night was going to change my life.
