JoJo's POV

“I'm gonna murder you biches!!!” I yell at them, splashing around as my hands break the calm surface of the chlorinated water in slapping motions.

My heart bursts at the sight of my two best buddies and I realize how quiet and lonely it'd been without them these two weeks.

I missed these bitches.

Mallory has taken position on my lounge chair and my headphones are now blasting some shit rock music while Ken tosses off her clothes, revealing a pale two-piece. She cries her excitement and jumps into the chlorinated water before I can stop her.

“Mallory, you witch! Get out of my chair and drop my headphones!!!!” I yell like a Banshee while the bitch calmly tugs the headphones up and gives me a quizzical look, “You say something there?” She smirks and I want to wring her neck.

I flip her off with two itchy middle fingers and she cracks up like the witch she is, a smile draws on my tight lips before she pops the headphones back on.

Ken blubbers as she breaks through the water surface and screeches, “What the fuck!”

“Tried to warn ya,” I say with a shit-eating grin, fighting the urge to scratch at my sensitive skin.

“There's chlorine in it!” she keeps yelling “Why is there chlorine in it!”

So I yell back, “Because that's how it gets sterile!”

“Why didn't you say so earlier, you know I'm allergic to chemicals.” Her eyes burn with the accusation and the chemical reaction.

“So am I Kenny,” I retort, stifling the urge to scratch at my irritated eyes.

“I'm sorry Jo, we just wanted to surprise you.”

“Awww, poor sweet Ken,” Mallory remarks, sitting up with an evil grin.

Our stark gazes swing to her direction, “You knew!”

The witch relaxes back on the chair, “Of course, I knew. I rigged every corner of this place with surveillance,”

We gawk at her, “Why?”

“I missed you, Jojo,” she says and places the headphones on her head, and relaxes back on the lounge chair.

Ken and I stare at each other for a minute, stuttering with unprocessed outrage, and silently stalk to where Mallory sits, enjoying the daylight without a care in the world. I rip off the headphones and we toss the bitch into the pool.

“That was a childish comeback guys, it was just an innocent prank!” She shouts when she resurfaces and starts laughing, “I'm not allergic to chlorine, BITCHES!!”

We ignore her and enter the house.

                                                       *****

“So what'd you find?” I ask Ken four hours later as we settle in the kitchen, making sandwiches.

Ken and I look like ocean lobsters even after basically plastering anti-reaction cream all over our skin.

Mallory answers, “We found something, You need to see this, Jo.” She flies into her bedroom chuckling like a kid on Christmas morning and Ken just shrugs.

Mal is never excited. Her emotions are always in either an eye-roll or a weird eyebrow arch. But when she comes back with a black suitcase, I sigh in helpless awareness.

She went full-on Men in Black.

Mallory ignores me, focused on the task at hand. Ken shrugs again and bites a mouthful of ham sandwich.

Mal pulls out a laptop, a stack of pictures, a bug recorder, and a flash, “After your last check-in, he broke his routine. That night, he met with his father at a restaurant then we followed them and that's when the story gets juicy—”

“What do you mean you followed them?” I must look horrified because Mal bluffs.

“Calm your tits, Jo, we were careful,” she says with a nonchalant wave and Ken cringes.

Ignoring Mal, I regard Ken with a straight face, “What happened?”

“We almost got caught!” Ken blurts out.

“What!!!”

“So Mal suggested we go into the restaurant since father and son were taking too long,” she pauses and I struggle to keep my expression calm.

“Andddd…”

“We went in as waiters and found they'd left through the back, this was after we found out his father owns the restaurant. So we rushed back to the van and tailed them to some storage facility. That was when Mal had the 'bright' idea to dress us up as two drunk tourists lost after a bit of wild partying.”

Mallory cuts in excitedly, “We waited outside and put on a real good show as tipsy women who wanted some fresh air and when they came out, we bugged them.”

Blood swims from my head so fast, my eyes swirl, “who's them?”

“Father and Son,” she says with a smug smile and I want to scream.

“What about the Mafia rumors?” I whisper.

“Oh! They are the Mafia.” Mal affirms like she just confirmed today's date and bites on a sandwich.

I am going crazy right now!

Ken meets my wild eyes, “Why didn't you stop her?”

“I was sick of the weather and she said we would finish the job faster and get outta there,” she whines.

I look at them, “You know this is bad, right?”

“Yeah, and we're prepared for it, stop freaking out Jo,” Mal says with a mouthful of ham sandwich and I suddenly want to beat her with it.

I quietly walk up the stairs and into my room. I slam the door, fall face-first on the mattress, and shriek into the pillow until my voice goes hoarse.

“You done freaking out?” They're peeking at me from the doorway.

“Yes.” I mumble from my pillow and sit up on the bed.

“There's nothing to fear, Jo,” Ken urges.

“I just don't wanna lose my best friends to Men of the Underworld,”

Mal Scoffs, “You read too many novels, Jo, that's not how it works,” She's typing something on a burner phone.

“How does it work, Mal?”

“We have evidence that could ruin their reputation or worse send them to jail. So they'll kiss our feet and if they try anything funny, we'll hand the evidence to the FBI and get under witness protection,” She says, in a distracted tone.

I chortle, “You're fucking delusional, Mal.”

“At least you cracked up,” Mal Snickers

“Maybe we should stop—”

“We can't stop now Jo, we've gone too far already, the moment those guys find the bugs, they're gonna come after us so we either sit like sitting ducks waiting for our gruesome deaths or we continue with the plan and at least try to finish this.” Ken resolves.

Mal and I nod in unison.

Let's finish this.

Ken and I notice the burner phone, “Mmh, What are you doing with the burner, Mal?”

“Activating Stage Two.”

JOJO’s POV Two Months Later… They were graduating high school today but Josephine would always go back to that day each time she passed the workshop. She and over three hundred graduates passed by the workshop today but no one spoke about it. They had all forgotten. It felt like they'd forgotten everything linked to him along with him and that made Josephine sick to her stomach. One month ago, She, Junnev, and Jeremy were hanging on for dear lives in the hospital. Of their three cases, Jeremy’s was the most baffling because apart from the external injuries he suffered from the accidents and the cement, the doctors couldn't find anything wrong with him. So why wouldn't he wake up? They closed off Jeremy in a special room for “intense observation purposes,” that's what they called it. They kept him there until he was cleared for flight to be transported back to America. Junnev knee joints were broken from the weight of concrete. He’d woken up during the surgery, his tone mighty

Kendrick tried to stand but her ears were ringing so badly from the explosion so she used her hands to cover them and suddenly there was a semblance of peace in the chaos that had become the world. Kendrick blinked debris and dust from her eyes as she looked around, trying to find a familiar face. She couldn't see past the dust that had formed from the explosion but she could hear the awful screams and the rapid-fire gunshots and those sounds would stay with her forever. Bullets were flying left and right and Kendrick knew she had to get out. She needed to get out of there before she got hit by a stray bullet or before the ceiling caved in or before she died from a heart attack so she put one leg in front of the other and trudged along. The dust was settling and she could see certain parts of the building clearer. She looked around the unconsciously fed bodies of men to see Jeremy and Junnev covered with debris and as she got closer to them, her mouth widened in horror. They wer

  • Devoured By His Enemy Eyes   The truth

Jeremy couldn't comprehend when the plan started falling apart but it had in fact… fallen. Lying in front of him were two bodies, Josephine was lying on the dirty ground, blood pouring out of her chest, yet she tried to sit up. Jeremy ran to her and took her trembling body into his arms, trying to apply enough pressure on her wound but crimson just kept flowing to the ground, steadily forming a pool of red around them. She’d run into the line of fire as he shot at her kidnapper. Why did she do that? Why? He racked his brain for a tangible reason but came up empty. Next to her was the masked kidnapper, they called her The Mistress. He had heard tales about her horrible doings since he'd been a tween, each one more fearsome than the last yet here she was, fallen by a mere bullet. She was dead. “Kila!” His father's men called from behind and he whipped around to see Maxim holding onto his bleeding neck. Apparently, the Mistress had decided his father would be her last victim.

“You are more like a pirate than an actual cop,” Junnev sparked after Burkely ended the call. “I am retired, Kid. Besides, all my years of following the law and reporting everything I saw left me without a wife, a roof over my head, and eventually a Jobless alcoholic with no future except nabbing one man.” “That's…” “Pathetic, I know.” Burkely fished out another stick of cigarette. “I'm a living, breathing bundle of addiction!” Burkely finished his tirade with his arms spread apart– eagle form on the sidewalk with a wide smile, pasted on his face as horns blared from vehicles passing by them. Junnev tugged his hands down and hissed through clenched teeth, “Control yourself, Old man. We don't want to draw any unwanted attention to ourselves.” Burkely shrugged out of Junnev’s hold and glared up at the kid, “Don’t call me an old man. You know my name, so use it.” “I'll call you whatever the fuck I want since you are the one who keeps forgetting,” Junnev responded with angry sparks

  • Devoured By His Enemy Eyes   New Plans New Allies

Something was wrong and Doc was certain, it had something to do with Josephine. The Dukes couple and their men were currently situated close to the bushes, away from the main road. Their men were well hidden with their guns and rifles in the surrounding bushes while waiting for the signal from their bosses who were inside a parked reporter van down the road. Doc was furious, anxious, and more so, scared as she got out of the van and paced down the length of the road. She tried again and again to get a hold of Jeremy Vongov but his line was switched off. “I told you we shouldn't have trusted him.” Will quipped from the back of the vehicle. “This is no time to point fingers, Will. Something bad has happened and we need to do something.” “How about you get Mallory and Kendrick and their friends involved? Get them to track down Jeremy.” Doc turned away from her husband, “It's too dangerous Will, why’d think we've been knowingly throwing them off course? Our hackers will easily h

“There was something in the air,” Jeremy thought to himself as he stalked to the back SUV where his father was already seated. Maxim looked composed and rather cheerful as he watched his son get into the vehicle from his side eye. “I told you no one was to touch her,” Jeremy growled in a chilling tone. “Oh, stop your grumbling, we have a big day ahead of us.” Maxim waved him off and grabbed the glass of vodka on the armrest, taking a healthy swallow. Jeremy schooled back his features and settled for a stiff smile, “Yes, we do Father.” “Good,” The vehicle sets in reverse and slowly pulls out of the driveway then it accelerates as the driver moves down the road and silence settles in the vehicle. Jeremy uses the quiet to finalize his plans by sending out a few texts and receiving a confirmed reply. “Tell me boy, how did your talk with the redhead go?” “That's none of your business.” “Humor me.” Jeremy locks his phone and focuses on his father, “Why do you care?” “Because yo
