Chapter 4 Dirty Secret

Author: Rhett Ashbourne
"That's private and has nothing to do with the case! I'm saying nothing!"

I was frustrated, but Felix wasn't at all fazed by my outburst.

His eyes never left me as he added, "We also found out your mother needed 75 grand for her surgery last month, but Shawn paid off his gambling debts with that money right before the surgery could happen.

"Your mother died. That's why you broke up with him. You hated him, so you wanted to kill him! That's your motive, isn't it?"

That was sudden, so I didn't see that coming. I was frozen in my seat, not even noticing my tears crawling down my cheeks. Yes, I despised Shawn. That was 75 grand, which meant countless all-nighters.

I nearly killed myself just to earn that money, yet he took it like it was nothing.

I wanted to tear him apart and put a bullet through my head when I first found out. However, I didn't go through with it.

I hung my head low. When I spoke, my voice was trembling. "It's true, but that's not a reason to murder him either."

"Are you suggesting that he had other enemies?" Felix leaned forward, his gaze sharp as a falcon's.

I met his eyes and smiled. Then, I huddled closer and whispered softly, "Of course, he did. Still, that information is for your ears only. No one else."

Felix gazed at me, saying nothing. Nevertheless, he eventually agreed to my terms. He also had a condition—he wanted to check out Queenie's house, and I said yes.

We arrived at Cinnamon Garden a short while later. I unlocked the door like it was my own home. A wave of flowery scent greeted us after we went in. The walls were filled with photos of Queenie and me, from children to adults.

It was a warm, cozy space. Felix took a seat on the couch after inspecting it. "Now, can you talk?"

I got Felix a glass of water first before telling him my tale.

"Shawn was a regular at… special parties. Masked people in expensive clothes gathered in a mansion. People from all walks of life were involved. The games involved were filthier than you could imagine.

"I'm talking about sexual favors, bribery, swinging, and more. All sorts of dark crimes lurk there; you name it, they have it. He took me there once, and I was blindfolded.

"I was in a gown. That was the first and last time I wore a gown. I had stupidly thought it was a regular event, but the bastard locked me in a room with an old fogey.

"He told me that he'd pay me 150 grand if I pleased him. In my panic, I knocked the old bastard out and jumped out a window. A month ago, he mentioned sneaking a hidden camera into the party somehow and recording some footage.

"'I'll have enough money for 10 lifetimes with this!' he said. I think he probably tried to blackmail one of the guests and got silenced."

I laid out everything I knew. Felix scanned me sharply, judgmentally. The silence dragged on and on. Eventually, he drained the whole glass of water and headed for the door.

He stopped at the photo wall at the entrance and looked back at me. "You knew he'd die, down to the exact time, didn't you?"

His statement petrified me, but I said nothing. To my surprise, Felix smiled. He pointed at the photo wall. "It's been a year since you last took a photo with Queenie, and it just so happens that you've also known Shawn for a year."

Then, Felix threw out a weird question. "Where'd you hide Queenie?"

Felix heaved a sigh. "I've sent my men right after you told me about the mansion. There's a big neighborhood filled with villas 3 miles away from Southwind Avenue. We might as well be telling the enemy we're coming if we were to knock on every single door."I closed my eyes and searched my memories. "I can remember roughly how many turns they took. And… there was a pungent scent of jasmine around the area."Felix's eyes lit up, and he shot up from his seat. "I'll rally my men, and we'll set off immediately!"His father looked at me and patted Felix's shoulders. "Protect Natasha," he said solemnly.Felix nodded, his expression serious.…We got into a police car and made our way to Southwind Avenue. The night was zooming past me, and my heart was pumping with trepidation and anticipation.I'd waited for this day for far too long, and so had Queenie. The car turned into the villa zone. I took several deep breaths and analyzed the scents around me."This is the place!" I said. "K

"The next day, I found Queenie lying in bed. She was dressed in red, or the red was dressed in her. I couldn't tell. All I could tell was that the wound on her wrist was cut so deep that I could see the whites of her bones." My voice was breaking now, and I could feel myself faltering. "She took her own life an hour after I left. So, I went back to her mother, got to know Shawn, and made a plan to steal his heart."That was when I got to know Nancy." I looked at Nancy. Her eyes were still red-rimmed. "She's also one of Shawn Goodall's victims. We struck a partnership. Well, we're the only allies we have."I took a deep breath. Something within me was cut loose. "I was going to spend the 75 grand on Queenie's mother so she could live until justice caught up to her. However, she trusted Shawn too easily and gave him my account's PIN. "Then, she succumbed to her illness. Ironic, I guess."My eyes never left Felix as I enunciated, "We're commoners. We don't have the power to investi

"I wanted her to come with me, but she said, 'Natasha, she gave birth to me. She wouldn't hurt me. You have to run. Run as far as you can, and never come back.' And so I did. They said Queenie's mom beat her half to death, and she was on bed rest for a whole month."I survived by begging on the streets. A lot of them gave me food, a place to live, and taught me how to read and write. Some even taught me how to make a living. I went through the high-school syllabus, completely self-taught. "I eventually took the SATs. It was a year and then some ago that I finally got my diploma. That was when I ran into Queenie at that restaurant. I was going to celebrate my success, and she was on a date with Shawn. "Shawn could easily charm a woman to fall for him if they didn't know him any better. He was handsome, crisply dressed, and well-spoken. I reunited with Queenie after her date. She took me to her place, the house I live in now. We chatted for the whole night."She said she had a

I was in the video, but I was alone at the table and chatting happily with… the air. I was also filling up the plate for no one. The second part showed me at my company, specifically when the cops were taking me away.I stood firm and spoke to the air. "Queenie can prove I was with her!" Then, I started crying, and the tears wouldn't stop coming.Felix looked at me. He said in a low, warm voice, "My team has gone to your place. It's covered in dust. Your neighbors said you haven't been home in a year. You've always been at Queenie's. She's already dead, isn't she? For a whole year?"That sliced through all the disguise I'd kept up. My crying turned hysterical and loud, lodging all I had to say down my throat. Felix patted the back of my cold, cold hand. The warmth slowly made me pull myself back together.I sniffled and told him about the past I didn't want to remember. "I was abandoned right after I was born, and Queenie's mom took me in. She was only one year old, and her m

My attacker convulsed violently from the electric currents coursing through his veins. I leaped back up and grabbed the pepper spray from my bag.A car screeched to a halt at the alleyway's entrance just as I was spraying pepper right into the assailant's eyes. The woman promptly slid back into the darkness. Just then, familiar footsteps reached us. The newcomers were none other than Felix and his colleagues. All tension left my body, and so did my strength. My legs turned to jelly as I fell backward. To my surprise, the cold, hard ground wasn't the one that greeted me. Instead, it was a broad, warm chest."Are you alright, Natasha?" asked Felix with a hint of worry that he likely didn't notice he was displaying.I forced a weak smile. "He killed Shawn, but he's just a lackey. Maybe you can use him—"Felix interrupted, "I went straight to the state leaders about the crime party you told me about. I was just about to resume that conversation when this happened. Save your strength

I rose to my feet, staring Felix down. After a while, a smile curled my lips. "I'll need to see how serious you are about this, Captain Chance," I said, calmly but firmly. "You're right. I did know when he would die, but I wasn't the murderer. And…"I paused before fixing Felix a solemn gaze. "And I'll die, but I want it to mean something." Then, I said no further.Felix didn't press for answers. Instead, he gave me a good, long look before leaving. I cooked up all of Queenie's favorite food that night, but she never came back. She didn't even show up when the food had gone cold.I grabbed my phone and kept texting her, asking when she'd get off work and come home. Nothing. She didn't even leave me on read.I stabbed a piece of meat and popped it into my mouth. A wave of loneliness swept through me as tears streamed down my cheeks. Then, I heard the rattle of keys coming from the entrance.I jerked my head up. There Queenie was, smiling and taking off her shoes at the porch. "
