INICIAR SESIÓNJemma's POV.
-
I can’t sit with the rest of that thought - or the picture. I check myself out faster than I should, my discharge and medical papers riding on the passenger seat as I merge into traffic, eyes raw, throat scraped dry.
At a red light, a small voice surfaces from somewhere in the back of my mind, and Anna’s face swims into view - bright, certain, delighted with herself.
“You promise, okay? You’re gonna gimme another little brother or sister soon.”
My breath catches. I can see her giggling, already running off to make her father swear the same promise. I shut my eyes, and the tears slide hot down my face.
HONK!
I flinch back into my body at the blare behind me and get my hands moving on the wheel again. I have to be strong.
I always have to be strong.
I was strong when the prom dress I saved for months to buy went to Lauren instead. Strong when she took credit for a party I planned start to finish. Strong every time she let herself into our home under the old excuse - best friends with Julian since high school.
Strong every time she smiled that smile and asked him, so sweetly, for the same gifts he’d given me.
Just once, I want to put it down. To be the one who gets to fall apart and have someone catch me.
By the time I’m pulling into the compound, breathing through the exercises that are supposed to calm me and ease the ache still sitting low in my body, I see a black sedan already parked in the shed. Voices, bright and easy, drifting from the porch. My stomach knots before I’ve even cut the engine.
“Oh- There she is! Jemma!”
I stiffen as a grinning blonde head pulls me into a hug, laughter wrapped all around her like perfume. On the steps behind her, Julian watches us, chuckling into his fist, holding something tender in his eyes I can’t quite place the target of.
“I’m so sorry I didn’t call ahead,” Lauren says, releasing me at last. “Julian was free, and my car’s been acting up - he offered to drive me to the mall. You should’ve come with us.”
You never think to call me at all.
I want to say it to her face, but I hold back the impulse. I glance past her to Julian instead, and when our eyes meet, I look away before I mean to, something in my chest pulling tight.
He steps up beside her, shrugging easily. “I happened to run into her on my way back from a meeting. She wondered if it’d be all right to spend some time with us.”
Before I can answer, Lauren’s hands close around my upper arms, cutting him off, her face arranging itself into something soft and shy - and utterly convincing.
“I’ll be married soon,” she says, eyes glistening right on cue. “Starting my own family, my own life. I just want to hold onto my sweet sister a little longer before all that happens.”
Her thumb brushes my arm once, something in the light movement unsettling me a little.
I manage a reluctant nod and glance past her toward Julian once again - a reflex, some old habit of looking for him whenever the ground under me feels uneven.
He's not looking at me at all.
His eyes are on Lauren, soft in a way I’ve spent years memorizing as mine. It lasts for a few seconds before he catches himself, glancing over at me instead as he eases into a smile.
Lauren watches us with her head tilted, that same soft smile still fixed in place.
“Aw,” she coos at us. “You two are just the sweetest.”
But her smile don’t meet her eyes.
“Goodness! What do you even have a phone for when you can’t pick up your calls?”
It takes a second too long to register that the scowling woman with a phone pressed to her ear is aimed at me - and then mine starts ringing inside my purse, right on cue. She lowers the phone and closes the distance between us, her face darkening with every step.
“Where have you been all morning, Jemma?” Ms. Ortis’s voice cracks like a whip. “Didn’t I tell you to cancel the hairstylist and contact the new one already? Do you have any idea how upset your mother is?”
I press my lips into a flat line and let the words land without flinching. Defending myself only ever makes it worse, and I don’t have the energy - not with the ache still sitting low in my belly from this morning, not with the exam room still fresh behind my eyes.
Though I know any chances of a shuteye has just gone down the drain with the presence of my mother-in-law.
“Mom, that’s enough.”
Julian’s voice cuts in, and I find the courage to look at her directly, watching the irritation on her face redirect anywhere but at him.
“You’ve been working just as hard helping Aunt Margaret with the preparations,” he tells her, voice smooth and calming. Then, to me, he passes a knowing smile - the one that used to be enough to undo any bad day I had.
It still is, apparently.
The hurt drains out of me like something switching off, and I hate - a little - how easily it happens. She looks like she wants one more word in, but Julian steers her away, and Lauren’s already climbing the stairs to the upper level, unbothered.
That’s right, I tell myself. Our family’s just under pressure. The wedding’s close. This is what stress looks like.
I tell myself I'll show Julian the medical reports tonight, once things quiet down.
I'm halfway up the stairs when Julian's voice drifts down from the landing above, low, and not meant for me.
“You didn't have to come all this way just to see me for five minutes.”
Nathaniel's POV.-I seldom pay attention to the fast-passing scenery outside the window as we lead a quiet motorcade toward the exclusive gates of Frostmere Estate.Soft rustle of documents breaks the silence. Sitting directly across from me, my personal secretary carefully flips through a thick leather folder.“The board has finalized all the arrangements for your formal succession ceremony as Vice President of the A.W. Corporation this Friday, sir,” Kayden briefs smoothly, his tone impeccably professional.I glance out the window at the familiar city skyline, gaze calm with a faint sense of nostalgia underneath. “Good. Ensure the safety audit for the new commercial district is on my desk by tomorrow morning.”“Understood, sir,” Kayden nods, making a swift note.Moments later, we arrive at the grand stone entrance of the estate. The heavy oak doors sweep open where two lines of household staff stand at pristine attention, bowing respectfully as I step out into the late afternoon cri
Jemma's POV.-Where did I come from? Do I have a family out there?I realize it - the agony that hit me after that woman had renounced me - that I’m now utterly alone. My marriage was a ruse, and my daughter-I couldn’t even protect her.A sob breaks out of me, surprising myself and Ymir. And when she looks at me, her eyes going wide with panic, I don’t wait for her to come embracing me once again to realize I’m crying.“Ymir...they took Anna from me...they took the only thing I ever had...” I crumble uncontrollably, clutching dearly onto her as the sobs betray me to unleash themselves once again. How am I even sure Jessica’s really mine, or Lauren’s as she had said? I don’t know anymore. What was real and what wasn’t?I thought I was done, I thought I was strong enough like I’d been in the past...but in truth, I’ve been utterly vulnerable. So shamefully so.*“You sure you’re doing the right thing? I mean...” Jay looks away, compelling us to follow his gaze back to the house. For a
Jemma's POV.-By the time I surface again, wrenched back by someone’s hands, Ymir is in front of me, her freckled face streaked with tears, her pale brown eyes red-rimmed and swelling.“I’m so sorry!”She pulls me into her arms, sobbing harder than I am, while I stare past her shoulder at the treetops, catching faint glimpses of a fading afternoon sky. I don’t know how long we stay like that. By the time we’re walking out of the hall - Ymir and Chloe holding me up between them - the sun is long gone and the air has turned cold.“Thank you, Chloe. I’ve got her from here,” Ymir says, her voice carrying that familiar countryside lilt that pulls a small, involuntary twitch through my face.“Okay then.” Chloe still looks unwilling to leave, but nods and steps back. “Take care of her. I'll call you.”Ymir guides me into the back of a car, and someone else slides into the driver’s seat.“What a spectacle,” the person mutters. “Can’t believe families like that actually exist.”“Just shut up
Jemma's POV.-I can’t breathe. I feel like all my organs are failing simultaneously. I stagger, my whole body threatening to give out beneath me.“M-Ms. Hail!”Chloe catches me before I hit the ground, my chest heaving as I try and fail to hold this moment together.“W-What...”It’s the only word I manage before the tears break loose and spill down my face. Lauren just smiles at me, radiant and utterly hollow. Ms. Ortis sighs beside her, stepping in to add her own weight to the blow. And Julian. He stands there quietly, watching me with something that might be pity - like that’s the only thing left he thinks I’m owed.Another voice joins the circle.“Oh my, you actually came?” Mom presses a gloved hand to her mouth, feigning surprise. “Here I thought I could distract you long enough to spare you all this until it was over.”What?“It’s no wonder,” Ms. Ortis says, a smirk hiding just beneath her words. “I was surprised to see her too. Though I doubt arriving earlier would’ve changed an
Jemma's POV.-When I come to, the first thing I register is the throb at the back of my skull - I must have fainted. I blink twice before scrambling upright, and there it is, a few feet away: the envelope, lying open on the floor. It sits there, indifferent to the damage it’s already done. My hands shake as I crawl toward it and snatch it up, reading the names over and over like repetition might change them.Nothing changes. It’s still my husband’s name beside my sister’s - on invitations I designed myself.A sob tears out of me. The card slips from my fingers as I double over, gasping through each ragged breath, tears blurring everything. That’s when my phone rings. It's Ymir.I answer without thinking.“Em, I can’t believe I freaking overslept when I’m supposed to be there with you! Jay thinks he can still make it to the reception-! Em? Hey, are you there?”I end the call, pick up my phone and clutch - my mind has gone somewhere past thought entirely. I step out of the house, flag d
Jemma's POV.-For one long second, I just look at him. Waiting for anything - a word, a glance that isn’t neutral.Nothing comes.Julian holds my gaze for a moment longer, then looks away first, like whatever he almost said wasn’t worth the trouble after all. And I don’t pry into it, choosing to let it all die without surfacing - as much as I want to ask why he’s shown up at all.I already feel so tired. Any more reading-into-every-little-thing and I might just shut down.Guess he’s not in the mood to be my armor today. Then I look between Lauren - adjusting her hair in the mirror, a smug little smile tucked into the corner of her mouth - and Mom’s cold, dismissive eyes.Without another word, I turn around and leave the suffocating space, doing my best to tame the sting at the back of my eyes and the knots in my chest. She’s always sided Lauren - the perfect daughter who took after her in every way. Same looks, charming personality, and promising future. If Julian hadn’t stepped forw
