Chapter 3

Author: Ginger King
"Ha ha ha ha! Oh my god, I'm dying, this is hilarious!"

Tyson laughed so hard tears nearly spilled from his eyes. He clutched his stomach, pointing at Charlie's faded old jacket.

"You old relic, have you lost your mind trying to claim family you don't have?

"Cass already told me her father's some overseas tycoon, settled abroad ages ago!

"Take a good look in the mirror before you open your mouth. You couldn't scrape together twenty bucks between the two of you, and you're trying to pass yourself off as Cass's real father?"

Dennis chimed in with a sneer of his own.

"Exactly! What kind of standing does Ms. Moore have that she'd end up with some dirt farmer for a father?

"It really is true, every forest has its share of strange birds. Now they're running scams at the Titan gym."

I watched their faces and felt the last bit of warmth in my chest go completely cold.

'Cassidy, you played the heiress in front of this animal so hard that you actually disowned the father who raised you?'

Tyson's laughter finally ran out, and his expression darkened, a flash of something vicious crossing his eyes.

"There's nothing I hate more than people putting on an act in front of me. Dennis, tonight, I don't just want to watch a fight. I want a live show, using these two as the punching bags.

"Get those heavyweights from outside in here. Teach these two frauds a real lesson."

Dennis waved his hand, and four hulking boxers stormed into the box.

"What do you think you're doing?! Is there no law left in this world?!" Charlie cried out, blanching, instinctively stepping in front of me.

"Hit them! As long as you don't kill them, I'll cover the medical bills!" Tyson barked.

One boxer, who had to weigh a good two hundred twenty pounds, sneered and shoved Charlie square in the chest without a shred of mercy.

"Charlie!" I roared.

Charlie was sixty years old. There was no way he could withstand a blow like that from a professional boxer.

His whole body flew backward and slammed into the massive marble coffee table at the center of the box.

There was a sickening crack, the kind that set my teeth on edge.

The back of Charlie's skull cracked against the table's sharp marble edge. He didn't even manage a scream before he crumpled to the floor like a heap of mud.

Blood surged out immediately, soaking his graying hair, and the sight of it burned my eyes.

"Charlie! Charlie, wake up!"

I threw myself at him like a madman, my shaking hands pressing against the wound on his head, warm blood coating my palms in an instant.

"Call an ambulance! Somebody call an ambulance now!"

I screamed myself hoarse at them, tears running down my face without my permission.

But Tyson only pinched his nose in disgust. "Ugh, what rotten luck. He's ruining my carpet."

He stepped closer, looking down at me with contempt as I knelt there in despair, then abruptly lifted his hard leather shoe and stomped it down onto the back of my hand where it braced against the floor.

"Aaah!"

The stiff heel tore straight through my skin, and the pain sent my whole body into spasms.

"What are you screaming for? Trying to shake me down now too?"

Tyson ground his heel harder into the back of my hand, sneering viciously.

"Weren't you the one running your mouth about this being your property?

"Now that the old relic's about to stop breathing, why don't you get up and bite me?"

The two boxers beside him pinned my shoulders down, forcing me flat in the spreading blood, holding me still no matter how I fought.

All I could do was watch, helpless, as Charlie's breathing grew weaker and weaker, blood spreading across the carpet.

"Please... let go of me, let me call 911... he's really going to die..."

"Want to save him? Sure." Tyson crouched down and patted my blood-smeared face.

"Lick the blood off this floor clean, and I might just be generous enough to let you make that call."

Just as my despair reached the point where I nearly cracked my own teeth from clenching my jaw, a sudden rush of footsteps sounded from outside the box.

A voice I knew better than any other rang out at the door.

"Tyson! What's going on? Who upset you?"

After Cassidy and Tyson were taken away by the police, the hallway finally settled back into quiet.A week later, Charlie woke up.He'd survived, but the damage to his brain had left his movements slow and his speech halting. When the police came to the hospital to take his statement, tears of pain welled up in his clouded old eyes.I held his calloused hand and asked him gently. "Charlie... what do you want to do about Cassidy?"Charlie's lips trembled. It was a long while before he spoke."I've lived an honest life, my whole life. I have no daughter who's an animal like that. Kenneth, whatever the law says she deserves, that's what she gets. Let her rot in a cell and pay for what she's done."With Charlie's testimony and the ironclad cloud footage on top of it, the case against Cassidy and Tyson was sealed shut.Three months later, the court handed down its final verdict.Tyson was sentenced to seven years for intentional assault causing serious injury, with the court noting

"The Cutler Group?"Cassidy stared at me in shock, as though seeing, for the first time, the man she'd shared a bed with for five years."You... you're from the wealthy Cutler family? That's impossible! You were supposed to be just an ordinary...""Just some fool who cooked for you at home out of the goodness of his heart, to spare your poor, fragile ego? Is that what you were going to say?"I finished her sentence for her, my eyes carrying no warmth at all."Cassidy, I gave you three years. I gave you resources, connections, a position as CEO that let you shine. I thought it might earn me your genuine loyalty."And what did you do with it? You took my money to keep a piece of trash like Tyson, and to feed his vanity in front of you, you had my hands and feet broken and threw your critically injured father into an alley!"And now you have the nerve to bring me forged evidence and try to force me out of this marriage with nothing?"The instant I finished speaking, the elevator d

The next morning, Charlie was finally wheeled out of the operating room. His life had been saved, but the damage to his brain was severe enough that he was still deep in a coma. They moved him to the ICU.Watching the old man through the glass, hooked up to a tangle of tubes, frail and helpless, the fire in my chest only burned hotter. That was when a flurry of footsteps echoed from the far end of the hallway.Cassidy came marching toward me, flanked by Tyson and a lawyer carrying a briefcase. After a night of careful planning, she'd apparently reclaimed her air of untouchable CEO poise."Kenneth." Cassidy stopped in front of me. There wasn't a trace of concern for her critically ill father in her eyes, only cold calculation."I've already talked to the doctors about my father's condition. I'll cover all the medical bills, so you don't need to worry about it. I came here today to settle things between us."She flicked her eyes toward the lawyer behind her, and he stepped forwar

Reading that message, the sneer at the corner of my mouth deepened.'Cassidy, Cassidy. So you really are a selfish, scheming, small-minded monster.'Instead of rushing to the hospital to see her own father, whose life hung in the balance, Cassidy's first move was to stay behind at the gym and destroy the evidence. If Charlie died, or ended up a vegetable, Tyson would be looking at criminal charges for intentional assault. And as the person in charge of the gym, Cassidy wouldn't just lose her reputation. She might well end up implicated and thrown in prison herself.More than anything, she was afraid I'd call the police.Once the authorities got involved, three years of buried, dirty bookkeeping at the gym, along with her sordid affair with a kept man, would come out into the light for good. She wasn't willing to give up the wealth and status she had now, and she certainly wasn't willing to lose her shining title of CEO.Sure enough, before long, a video titled "Freeloading Husb

"Let go of him! Get away from me, all of you!"Cassidy shoved the towering boxer aside like a woman possessed and pulled Charlie's limp body into her arms, shaking so hard it looked like she was coming apart."Dad! Dad, wake up! It's me, Pumpkin! How are you even here?! Why is there so much blood?!"Tyson, startled by how frantic she looked, spoke up hesitantly."Cass, what... what did you just call him? Isn't he supposed to be some con artist? Why are you holding onto a beggar like that?!""Shut up!"Cassidy whipped around, her eyes bloodshot, and roared at Tyson and Dennis."Call an ambulance! He's my father! If anything happens to him, I'll make every single one of you pay with your lives!"Dennis flinched violently and fumbled his phone out to dial with shaking hands.Beside him, Tyson had gone pale, one hand clamped over his mouth, too afraid to make a sound. He never could have imagined that the half-dead old man he'd just ordered beaten was the actual father of his sug

Cassidy had arrived. At the sound of her voice, Tyson immediately pulled his foot off my hand.He threw himself into her arms as though he'd suffered some unbearable wrong."Cass! You're finally here! I was so scared!""Don't be scared, baby, I'm here now. Whoever dared touch you, I'll destroy them."Cassidy wrapped her arms around him, stroking his back with a tenderness and urgency in her voice I'd never once heard directed at me.Then she lifted her head and swept the box with a look of cold fury. Her eyes landed first on Charlie, still lying in a pool of blood. His face was so covered in blood by then that from a distance, he was barely recognizable.I watched a flash of disgust cross Cassidy's eyes, the way someone might look at a bag of garbage. Her gaze moved on to me next, still pinned to the floor by the boxer. The second she got a clear look at my face, her pupils shrank, and panic spread across her features."Ken... Kenneth?! What are you doing here?!"Seeing he
