Mia POV

I didn't sleep after he turned off the lamp. I laid on his couch with the good blanket pulled up to my chin, hoodie still on, binder still on even though rule two said four hours max and I was already at hour nineteen. My ribs hurt every time the perfect sixty-eight degree AC kicked on and the cold air hit the sweat under my shirt.

In Room Three, I had Luis snoring on the top bunk so loud the metal frame shook and Ethan turning every twenty minutes in Bed A by the window and the wall AC

Mia POV Nobody in Room Three says my name the way Liam does.He says it low, like he's setting it down somewhere it won't break. Here, I'm just Texas, or yo, or move. Luis calls me Texas when he wants my charger. Ethan calls me Texas when he wants to know why I'm so quiet. Nobody calls me anything when I actually need them to notice that I'm not breathing right. That is the thing about room Seven. I hated being watched there, and now that no one watches at all, it feels worse. The morning starts like a fight. Luis's alarm is a man shouting about burpees, and I wake up with my fist already wrapped around the strap of my bag under the bed. I don't think about it, My body does it before my brain catches up.The mattress dips in the middle, shaped like every boy who gave up before me. I roll to the edge to avoid it, and my back pulls. Not sharp, just tired, like my body is keeping score.Ethan is by the window, hood up, because the window never fully shuts and the night air comes straigh

Mia POV I wake up at 5:00 AM because Luis's alarm is a drill sergeant shouting.Room Three is cold in a different way, Not 52 degrees cold. Just thin walls, rattling AC, no sixty eight hum. Axe spray already in the air because Luis sprayed at 5:01.Bed C bottom bunk by door dips in middle, My back hurts. In room seven I had couch then king bed edge, Now metal frame. My duffel is half zipped under Bed C, Same spot as under couch in Seven. I check it with my foot. Binder safe, ID safe.Ethan is already awake, Bed A by window, looking at stadium lights. He didn't sleep much, He kept looking at me last night after texts."You good?" he asks quiet so Luis doesn't hear."Back hurts," I say. True."Yeah, Bed C sucks. Everyone hates Bed C. That's why they gave it to trial."He pauses. "You different, Mason.""I was in room seven four nights. Captain's room.""No. Before that too, ODP you talked all time. Now you don't talk. You don't bite nails now, Mason always bit nails."My hands fly into

Mia POVFriday. Check up day.I wake up at 5:30 because I didn't really sleep, I kept thinking about four PM.Four PM today I go back to Room Three, Leak fixed.Room Seven is quiet, AC humming at sixty eight. Liam is already on the floor stretching. He always wakes before alarm. Left wrist taped, right knee taped, gold armband. Back to me so I can't see his face.My duffel is half zipped under the couch, Same spot every night. I check it without moving much. Bottle at bottom, binder folded between cushions, sock with pads, ID safe. Still there."Drink," he says.I sit up, knees to my chest, and drink. Full bottle. Cold. One forty point one this morning, I weighed myself in the bathroom while he was stretching. Up from one thirty two. I ate everything. Two eggs, banana, peanut butter, two proteins yesterday. Even his bottle on pitch Wednesday when he held it out and my fingers touched his."Good," he says when he hears me swallow. He still doesn't turn.At six we go to mess hall, Early

Liam POV"You were warm. That's why I didn't move you."I said it at 11:03 last night. Lights low. AC humming at sixty eight again. He didn't answer. He was on the couch, knees up, blanket to his chin, pretending to sleep. But I saw his hands tighten on the blanket.I shouldn't have said it.I'm captain. I don't let anyone sleep in my bed. For three years, no one did. That's my rule.Yesterday the AC died, Room went down to 52. He was shivering on the couch, teeth chattering. Thin blanket did nothing. I called maintenance, No answer because we were on quarantine line.I looked at my bed. King bed, thick duvet. Then at him. Cold.I said, "You will get sick and fail Friday medical if you stay there. Just tonight. Bed is warm."He said no at first. Then he got on the far edge. Back to me. We put pillows in the middle like a wall.I told myself it was for medical. Evans said temperature matters for rash. That was a lie.At 3 AM the pillow wall was on the floor, He was on my chest. Head o

Mia POVI don't move for a whole minute. His chest rises slow under my cheek, Thump. Thump. Thump. Steady like he is still asleep. His arm is heavy around my waist, warm through his shirt that swallowed me. My hand is fisted in his sweatpants like I grabbed him in my sleep and didn't let go.The pillow wall we built is on the floor. I kicked it.Thermostat still blinks 48. AC dead. Room Seven freezing except here, inside his duvet. His duvet smells like his expensive detergent plus my vanilla now. Mixed. Like we mixed.I should move. If he wakes up and sees me like this — Mason Carter, trial rookie, cuddled into his chest. My heart beats so fast I'm scared he will feel it.I try to slide back, inch by inch. My hair catches on his collarbone. He makes a low noise in his sleep and his arm tightens automatically. Pulls me closer.I freeze. His eyes open. Not slowly. Instant. Captain eyes. He looks down at me, at my head on his chest, at my hand fisted in his pants, at his own arm around

Mia POVI wake up because the AC kicks. Not the sound, The cold. Sixty eight hits my ankles where the blanket slipped off in the night. His blanket. His couch. His shirt swallowing me to the thighs. For a second I forget where I am. Then I smell it vanilla trapped in the fabric, light but everywhere now. Three years this room had no smell at all. Now it smells like me.Liam is already up, On the floor by his desk, stretching hamstrings. Back to me. Left wrist taped, right knee taped, gold armband on bicep even at 5:47. He always wakes before his alarm. He told me once, "If you wake second, you lose the day."My duffel under the couch is still half zipped, I check without moving. bottle at bottom, binder deep between cushions, sock with pads, ID safe in the pocket I sewed. No one touched it.He knows I'm awake. He doesn't turn."Drink."Full bottle on the desk edge, Since Evans wrote dehydration in red twice, there is always a full bottle.I sit up, knees to my chest, and drink. My thr
