Chapter 3

作者: Thirteen Pennies
However, Heather turned out to be ungrateful and demanded a divorce. Since she was so determined to court disaster, she could just wait to reap what she sowed.

I couldn't be bothered to stick around and watch Heather and Lucas flaunt their love, so I turned to leave. However, Heather called out and stopped me.

For a moment, I thought she'd had a change of heart, but her next words plunged me into an icy abyss.

"Randall, since you've already signed the divorce agreement, let's go to the courthouse right now to get the divorce process over with, so we can get the divorce certificate as soon as possible."

I never expected Heather to be in such a hurry. Six years together, and she couldn't spare even a shred of regard for our marriage?

I swallowed the bitterness rising in my throat and said coolly, "Let's talk about it tomorrow. I have to go to the hospital for a follow-up and get an IV drip."

Not long ago, Heather had snatched a major deal from a rival company, and they had harbored a grudge ever since. They hired someone to deliberately ram a car into her on her regular route, intending to cripple her all over again.

At the critical moment, I threw myself in front of her and saved Heather, but I ended up with myocardial damage. Now I had to go to the hospital every day for check-ups and nutrient infusions just to maintain basic vital signs.

Heather froze for a second, as if only just remembering this had happened.

Just as a flicker of emotion crossed her face, a dark glint flashed in Lucas' eyes. He tugged at Heather's sleeve, and his eyes reddened as he said, "Hattie, Randall was only pretending to back off earlier. He never really intended to go through with the divorce.

"If that's the case, then we should find time to terminate the pregnancy. I don't want my child to be called an illegitimate child after it's born.

"And more than that, Hattie, it pains me to see you torn like this. Randall saved your life, and all those years I was abroad, he was the one by your side, taking care of you. It's only natural you'd waver."

His acting was obviously terrible, yet Heather bought every word of it. The hesitation in her eyes was quickly replaced by icy indifference.

"Randall, I didn't think you were this manipulative, resorting to playing the victim card just to soften me up. You can go to the hospital anytime. To avoid any further complications, we're going to the courthouse today to finalize the divorce!"

Even though I no longer held any expectations for Heather, a dull ache still throbbed in my heart.

When I was first diagnosed with myocardial damage, she had cried and promised to treat me well for the rest of our lives. Yet the lifetime she spoke of had only lasted six short years.

It was because of her that I suffered from myocardial damage in the first place, and she knew full well that if I skipped my IV infusions at the hospital, my life would be at risk.

Yet she insisted I go through with the divorce first just to keep Lucas happy. Was my life really less important to her than getting a divorce?

I felt like six years of my devotion had gone entirely down the drain.

Still, Heather wouldn't be so smug for much longer. After all, everything she now possessed would soon come crashing down because of her own self-destructive choices.

Although getting the divorce certificate would allow me to strip Heather of everything, I had no intention of dying just yet.

So, gritting my teeth, I pleaded, "Heather, my check-up really can't wait. Can you, for the sake of the fact that I once saved your life, put off the divorce until tomorrow?"

Before Heather could speak, Lucas cut in. "Randall, after all this talk, you just don't want to go through with the divorce, do you? You're still putting on a pitiful act, trying to make everyone feel sorry for you and cast me as some unreasonable villain. You're setting me up to be torn apart by public scorn.

"All I want is to be with Heather. Why do you keep standing in our way? You're even going so far as to pressure Hattie with the fact that you saved her life before? Well, since you won't let the three of us be a family, then I'll give you my blessing and leave. Happy now?"

"You want to abandon me and save yourself? Not a chance!" Heather shouted.Lucas, however, smirked and pulled a divorce agreement from his pocket, one that already bore Heather's signature. "If I want to, I can end this relationship anytime."Heather's pupils contracted sharply. "When did I sign this?""A week ago, when you were drunk."Only then did it dawn on Heather that she had been played. Gritting her teeth, she snarled, "Lucas Mallard, you selfish, cold-blooded, despicable piece of scum! You set me up!"Heather slapped Lucas hard across the face and, losing all decorum, spat on him.Lucas was not about to take that lying down. He slapped her right back. Then, while everyone's attention was diverted, he kicked over Heather's wheelchair and bolted without looking back.By the time anyone realized what had happened, Lucas was long gone. The debt collectors surrounded Heather, demanding payment.Once they discovered Heather couldn't come up with the money either, they rained

The business partner, Matthew Newhall, took my proposal without hesitation and confirmed the partnership with me on the spot, casually tossing Heather's proposal aside as he did so. Heather's face turned red with rage. Lucas jabbed a finger at me and said indignantly, "Mr. Newhall, Randall is a plagiarist. His previous patent was stolen from me. This man has serious character issues, and partnering with him comes with enormous risk. Please reconsider your decision!"At Lucas' words, everyone in the room shot me looks of contempt and disdain.Faced with Lucas' slander, Matthew simply let out a cold laugh. He pulled out his phone, displayed the original sketches I had saved long ago, proving my case right there in front of everyone."Izzy already told me what kind of person Randall is. These are all the original sketches Randall made when he designed his patent. The one who plagiarized wasn't Randall. It was Lucas."Once the evidence was laid bare, public opinion flipped in an inst

Within half a month of joining, I developed a new patent that brought Greene Corporation massive profits. Isabella gave me a promotion and a raise, and my colleagues, now genuinely convinced of my abilities, completely changed their attitude toward me.My career was soaring, and my life was peaceful and fulfilling.During this time, even though I didn't go out of my way to keep tabs on Heather and Seymour Corporation, they both kept making headlines on their own.At first, the headlines were all negative, and I thought Seymour Corporation would go bankrupt in no time. To my surprise, it didn't take long for the company to make a comeback. Not only did the stock price recover, but the funding gap was somehow bridged overnight, and they even managed to secure a number of new partnerships.Heather and Lucas went crazy sending me text messages to show off."Randall, ever since Luke took over as vice president, the company has made a full recovery. It runs perfectly fine without you!

Heather knew that half the company had been built on my blood and sweat. She was trying to use the threat of firing me to force me to give in. Lucas seized the chance to fan the flames. "Randall, the job market is brutal right now. What decent job can you even land if you leave the company? I suggest you don't gamble with your future!"As long as you heal Hattie's legs and lift the crisis at Seymour Corporation, Hattie and I can still let you stay at the company even after your divorce—"Before he could finish, I cut him off coldly. "No need for all that trouble."In the next second, Heather received my online resignation."What? You're resigning?" Heather's expression stiffened. She clearly hadn't expected a workaholic like me to hand in my resignation. She knew at that moment that her last means of manipulating me was gone. A flicker of regret passed through her eyes, but she was too proud by nature to ever lower herself before me.In the end, out of sheer spite, she approved

I sneered inwardly. Heather still had no idea that I had long since brought my parents over to live with me. She no longer held any leverage over me.Since it had come to this, I saw no reason to keep hiding the truth any longer. I was actually curious to see her reaction once she learned the truth."Heather, I'll give it to you straight. I'm bound to a system that brings good fortune to my wife. My innate constitution that brings luck to my wife is very real. "The reason your legs miraculously healed and your business sailed smoothly from the start was all because of me. Every bit of good fortune you and your company enjoyed was something I exchanged for with my own lifespan. "The only condition was that you couldn't divorce me. The moment you did, I would have the right to take everything back. Yet you just had to go dig your own grave, so I reclaimed everything I had exchanged for you!"Hearing this, Heather stood frozen in shock. However, it didn't take long for her to accep

Faced with Heather's threat, I let out a cold laugh."But I haven't done anything. Feel free to investigate. Though you might want to worry about yourself first. Haven't you noticed that your legs have already lost all sensation?"Heather's expression fell for a split second as I'd struck a nerve. Still, she stubbornly insisted, "My legs are just numb. Don't you dare jinx me!"To prove to everyone that her legs were fine, Heather forced herself to stand. A sharp cracking sound rang out, and in the next second, her leg snapped at a gruesome 180-degree fracture. She collapsed heavily to the ground once more.Everyone hurriedly rushed Heather to the hospital. Both the reporters and I followed to watch how things would unfold. Before long, the examination report came back. The moment Heather read its contents, her face drained of all color, and she froze on the spot."I'm paralyzed? How is that possible? Oh! I know! This report must be wrong. I demand a re-examination!"Yet no matt
