Chapter 1

Author: Morning Light
My family went bankrupt, and my dad knew there was no way he could dodge prison time. He was scared someone would come after me for revenge once he was gone, so he decided to marry me into a rich family.

In the end, he set his sights on the powerful Holt family.

He used their crimes to blackmail them, then tempted them with a house full of rare antiques. With this carrot-and-stick approach, they finally caved and agreed to the marriage.

None of us expected that on the day of the wedding, Sebastian Holt's beloved first love, Nina Ward, would get drunk trying to drown her sorrow, crash her car, and die on the spot.

From that moment on, Sebastian hated me down to the bone.

He wrapped his fingers around my throat and snarled, "Calista Lockhart, don't think marrying me means you get to keep living your cushy life. After we're married, I'll make you spend every day wishing you were already dead so you can atone for Nina's death."

The day of Nina's funeral, it poured in Berdona. Sheets of rain came down like the sky had split open. Sebastian made me crawl all the way to her burial spot, pressing my forehead to the ground with each step.

When he shoved me to the ground, my knees slammed into the stone slabs with a heavy thud. A wave of searing pain shot through me, but I gritted my teeth and forced the tears back. Under his icy stare, I started to inch forward.

Loose gravel sliced open my forehead and my knees. Rain mixed with blood and streamed down my face, blurring my vision. By the time I finally reached the burial spot, I was a bloody mess and on the verge of collapse.

But that was only the beginning of the nightmare.

After we got married, Sebastian gave all the household staff a few days off and turned me into his maid. I slept in the maid's room and watched him bring a different woman into the master bedroom every night. I had to serve them drinks, do their laundry, cook their meals, make the bed…

That still wasn't enough for him.

One night, just like always, Sebastian brought another woman home. Around 2:00 am, my phone suddenly rang. His commanding voice came through the speaker.

"Calista, you've got ten minutes to buy two boxes of condoms and bring them up. If you're late, you'll deal with the consequences."

I sprinted through the streets in the middle of the night, running block after block until I finally found a pharmacy still open.

When I delivered the condoms to the master bedroom, Sebastian yanked me inside as well. I froze in panic when I saw him and that woman as naked as the day they were born, instinctively trying to back away.

He blocked my path, shoved me toward the bed, and said with cruel amusement.

Philip ignored Sebastian and instead told his men to gather all the guests. His sharp gaze swept across the room, and once everyone fell silent, he raised his voice and said, "Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to be here today."First, I'd like to formally introduce my son, Isaac Stark. He's been keeping a low profile, starting a business here in Berdona. He's now founded Galaxeous Tech, and it's doing quite well. I hope you'll look out for him if any of you have opportunities to work together in the future."Then he turned slightly and brought me, standing beside Isaac, into the center of the room. His tone softened a shade as he continued, "Second, I'd like to introduce my daughter-in-law, Ms. Calista Lockhart."She used to be the Lockhart family's heiress, and she and my son have known each other for years. Their bond runs deep. Now that they're married, she's the future lady of the Stark household."At this point, Philip suddenly looked over at Sebastian,

Sebastian went on, "Nina just wanted to make me feel guilty so she could drive a wedge between us. I also found out everything Jenna—or Nina—did to you. I know you've suffered a lot because of us, and I've already made the Ward family pay."If you're still not over it, you can hit me, curse me, or punish me. Do every awful thing to me that I once did to you. Please, just give me another chance. Let me make up for all the crap I put you through, okay?"What he said completely blindsided me. I honestly hadn't expected Nina to set up such an elaborate scheme for Sebastian. In that moment, I finally let go of the past. After a brief silence, I said, "Sebastian, I accept your apology. At the same time, I want to apologize on my dad's behalf for forcing you into that marriage back then."I did a lot of thinking after the divorce. If my dad hadn't pushed you to marry me, Nina wouldn't have 'died.' Even though you two later did a lot of things that really hurt me, I've still always felt gu

Isaac said, "I even wondered if I'd agreed to take over the family business back then, maybe your dad would've thought about marrying you to me. After you got married, I really went off the rails for a while."Later, I heard Sebastian treated you badly and did all kinds of things to hurt you because of that ex of his. That was when I made up my mind—I had to hurry up and get powerful enough to steal you back."These past few years, I made a lot of money off projects. Last month, I used that money to start my own company. My dad saw that I'd achieved some success, so he finally understood what I wanted and forgave me for being such a rebel back then."He paused, then continued, "He and my sister even checked out my company and really liked its prospects. They invested a huge chunk of money in it. Now, I can finally stand in front of you with my head held high. I can finally confess to you for real, just as myself, and ask you to marry me."Everything Isaac said dropped into my heart

So, Isaac really owned all of these things? It took me a long time to find my voice. When I finally spoke, I couldn't stop the anger from bleeding into my voice. "Wow. Real nice, Isaac. Aren't you gonna explain where this money came from? What, are you some rich kid pretending to be broke just to mess with me? Or did you really pimp yourself out like Sebastian said?"Isaac panicked slightly at my outburst and scrambled to explain, "No, no! I swear I didn't do anything like that, Calista. It's true that I'm not some poor scholarship kid. I'm the only son of the Starks from Riverton—the so-called Stark heir that people in Berdona are always talking about."I just never cared about the family business. My dad and my sister have always been the ones running it. I rarely show my face in public, so everyone's only ever heard of me. They don't know what I look like."I was stunned. My voice came out cool yet edged with anger. "So, you really were a rich heir pretending to be broke just to

The ink on the divorce certificate was barely dry before I turned around and got myself a new marriage certificate.Sebastian was convinced I was just doing it to spite him. I'd grown up with a silver spoon and was used to living in comfort. There was no way I'd last long going hungry and scraping by.Poverty puts every marriage to the test.Sebastian was certain that in a couple of days, Isaac and I would go our separate ways. Then, he would swoop in with some perfectly timed comfort and concern. I would finally realize that he was the man who suited me best. With that thought in mind, his anger over my remarrying someone else started to fade. Right now, he had more pressing problems to deal with.Ever since I'd moved out of the Holt residence, Jenna had been hovering around him every day.
