Chapter 4

Author: Morning Light
"The living will never win against the dead, Calista. Nina is the one Seb will always love. You're nothing but a toy for him to vent his sexual frustrations."

I couldn't even be bothered to argue with Jenna. I just shot back, "So what if Sebastian still loves your sister? She's dead. And even if he's just using me to vent his desires, I'm still Mrs. Holt."

My words set Jenna off. She raised her hand to slap me, but I was done dealing with her. I just swatted her hand away and turned to leave.

I didn't expect that tiny movement to send her stumbling backward. She lurched, smacked her head against the sharp edge of the table, and yelped in pain.

Her cry had barely faded when Sebastian burst into the kitchen. He rushed straight to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as he checked her over.

A huge bump was already forming on her forehead. She curled up pitifully in his arms, sniffling. "Seb, I was just chatting with Calista and happened to mention Nina. She instantly flipped on me and said she was Mrs. Holt now, and that Nina was dead. She even hit me. Nina would be devastated if she knew what I was put through."

Sebastian looked at me. His dark eyes were like a bottomless, frozen lake. There was nothing but icy contempt in them.

I opened my mouth to explain, but he didn't give me the chance. His voice was low and vicious. "Somebody get in here. I want her slapped a hundred times. Don't skip a single one."

His men had seen how much he'd been spoiling me these days, so they hesitated. One of them spoke up, unsure. "Mr. Holt, there's probably some misunderstanding here. Maybe we should hear Mrs. Holt out first."

Sebastian barked, "Is this my house or yours? Who calls the shots here?"

The men stopped hesitating and grabbed me. Slap after slap landed across my face. Each one stung like fire, but it felt even more like they were landing on my heart.

By the time they finished all hundred, my face was so swollen I barely looked human. But the pain in my cheeks didn't come close to even a fraction of the ache in my chest.

Sebastian carefully scooped Jenna up in his arms. He looked down at where I was crumpled on the floor and said coldly, "Calista, remember this lesson. Don't forget how you became Mrs. Holt in the first place. You'll never wash away what you owe Nina. Try to use her death to your advantage again, and I'll have you beaten again."

With that, he walked off with Jenna in his arms. He didn't look back once.

I couldn't hold back my tears anymore. I sat curled up in a corner of the kitchen, cupping my burning, swollen cheeks, sobbing so hard I could barely breathe.

That desperate urge to get away from Sebastian surged up in me all over again.

I wanted to tell Dad that I didn't think I could wait a year. I wanted a divorce right then and there.

…

After that day, I moved out of the master bedroom on my own. Sebastian didn't try to stop me. Things between us became even worse than they were at the start.

I was just working up the nerve to bring up divorce when I found out I was pregnant. The baby's unexpected arrival shook my resolve.

I decided to sit down and talk things through properly with Sebastian.

Before I could, he invited me to a formal event—he was hosting a memorial banquet for Nina. It was a lavish affair.

Everyone was abuzz about how deep and enduring Sebastian's love for Nina was.

I had no interest in joining in, so I slipped away from the crowd and wandered out into the garden alone to clear my head.

Philip ignored Sebastian and instead told his men to gather all the guests. His sharp gaze swept across the room, and once everyone fell silent, he raised his voice and said, "Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to be here today."First, I'd like to formally introduce my son, Isaac Stark. He's been keeping a low profile, starting a business here in Berdona. He's now founded Galaxeous Tech, and it's doing quite well. I hope you'll look out for him if any of you have opportunities to work together in the future."Then he turned slightly and brought me, standing beside Isaac, into the center of the room. His tone softened a shade as he continued, "Second, I'd like to introduce my daughter-in-law, Ms. Calista Lockhart."She used to be the Lockhart family's heiress, and she and my son have known each other for years. Their bond runs deep. Now that they're married, she's the future lady of the Stark household."At this point, Philip suddenly looked over at Sebastian,

Sebastian went on, "Nina just wanted to make me feel guilty so she could drive a wedge between us. I also found out everything Jenna—or Nina—did to you. I know you've suffered a lot because of us, and I've already made the Ward family pay."If you're still not over it, you can hit me, curse me, or punish me. Do every awful thing to me that I once did to you. Please, just give me another chance. Let me make up for all the crap I put you through, okay?"What he said completely blindsided me. I honestly hadn't expected Nina to set up such an elaborate scheme for Sebastian. In that moment, I finally let go of the past. After a brief silence, I said, "Sebastian, I accept your apology. At the same time, I want to apologize on my dad's behalf for forcing you into that marriage back then."I did a lot of thinking after the divorce. If my dad hadn't pushed you to marry me, Nina wouldn't have 'died.' Even though you two later did a lot of things that really hurt me, I've still always felt gu

Isaac said, "I even wondered if I'd agreed to take over the family business back then, maybe your dad would've thought about marrying you to me. After you got married, I really went off the rails for a while."Later, I heard Sebastian treated you badly and did all kinds of things to hurt you because of that ex of his. That was when I made up my mind—I had to hurry up and get powerful enough to steal you back."These past few years, I made a lot of money off projects. Last month, I used that money to start my own company. My dad saw that I'd achieved some success, so he finally understood what I wanted and forgave me for being such a rebel back then."He paused, then continued, "He and my sister even checked out my company and really liked its prospects. They invested a huge chunk of money in it. Now, I can finally stand in front of you with my head held high. I can finally confess to you for real, just as myself, and ask you to marry me."Everything Isaac said dropped into my heart

So, Isaac really owned all of these things? It took me a long time to find my voice. When I finally spoke, I couldn't stop the anger from bleeding into my voice. "Wow. Real nice, Isaac. Aren't you gonna explain where this money came from? What, are you some rich kid pretending to be broke just to mess with me? Or did you really pimp yourself out like Sebastian said?"Isaac panicked slightly at my outburst and scrambled to explain, "No, no! I swear I didn't do anything like that, Calista. It's true that I'm not some poor scholarship kid. I'm the only son of the Starks from Riverton—the so-called Stark heir that people in Berdona are always talking about."I just never cared about the family business. My dad and my sister have always been the ones running it. I rarely show my face in public, so everyone's only ever heard of me. They don't know what I look like."I was stunned. My voice came out cool yet edged with anger. "So, you really were a rich heir pretending to be broke just to

The ink on the divorce certificate was barely dry before I turned around and got myself a new marriage certificate.Sebastian was convinced I was just doing it to spite him. I'd grown up with a silver spoon and was used to living in comfort. There was no way I'd last long going hungry and scraping by.Poverty puts every marriage to the test.Sebastian was certain that in a couple of days, Isaac and I would go our separate ways. I would finally realize that he was the man who suited me best. With that thought in mind, his anger over my remarrying someone else started to fade. Right now, he had more pressing problems to deal with.Ever since I'd moved out of the Holt residence, Jenna had been hovering around him every day.
