Chapter 221

Author: Little Happiness
"Sincere?"

Harriett let out a sharp, mocking laugh, her face full of disdain. "She's just trying to butter you up. Who knows what she's secretly plotting? Otherwise, why would she suddenly call her son back for no reason?"

Benedict let out a long, tired sigh. His eyes were rimmed with exhaustion, and his voice dropped. "Your stepmother has a terminal illness. She doesn't have much time left."

The living room fell silent in an instant.

Benedict looked toward the stairs, his voice hoarse. "When Isaac's father died, Isaac was still young. She left the Shore family and married me. All these years, she has barely fulfilled the role of a mother. She knows that Isaac resents her. She just wants to make peace before she's gone. What's so wrong with that?"

Harriett had nothing to say.

I sat there, taking it all in, and felt my heart sink with a mix of emotions.

After speaking about Diana, Benedict turned to Harriett, disappointment etched into his expression. "I haven't even gotten to yo

Isaac gave a quiet hum, got into his car, and said, "Go back inside."I stood in the entrance and watched until his Bentley merged into the darkness. Only then did I head home. Looking at the brand-new smart lock, my heart thumped with a warmth I couldn't quite put into words. Right then, my phone started ringing. When I saw Timothy's name on the screen, I hung up immediately. He called again and again, and I rejected every single call.…The next morning, the doorbell woke me. Outside stood Gloria. As soon as I opened the door, I realized that she had come because of Terence."Josie, I want… to see Timothy." Gloria looked far more worn than before. "It's been so long, and I don't know how well Timothy is recovering. Could you take me to see him?"I sighed and tried to talk her out of it. "Gloria, I know you want him to forgive Terence. But with your history with their family, you'd only be humiliated if you visited him.""But… Terence is still locked up, and Timothy hasn't ma

I practically grabbed onto the chance like a lifebuoy. Afraid that Isaac would change his mind, I hurried to pull open the passenger door and jumped in.The car was silent, save for the gentle whisper of air from the vents. He slowly started the engine and asked, "Where are we going?"I definitely didn't want to go back to the hospital. If Timothy didn't care whether I lived or died, why should I go running back at night to take care of him?Hence, I gave Isaac the address of the neighborhood where I was currently staying. The car moved steadily down the road. After hesitating a long while, I finally spoke. "About what I mentioned before… Can you reconsider helping me with my daughter's paternity test?"Isaac's hand on the wheel didn't move. His long fingers were defined and pale under the faint dashboard light. After a few seconds, he said flatly, "I've already refused. I don't want to say it twice."I sighed quietly and shut my mouth. The entire ride continued in silence. Whe

I said coldly, "Do you even know who Isaac is? He doesn't bother looking twice at you. Why would he look at me? What do you think we'd even talk about?"Timothy stared at me for a few seconds, then the suspicion in his eyes slowly faded. As expected, he probably decided that what Isaac had said just now was nothing more than a random provocation. After all, someone like me couldn't possibly have any connection to someone like Isaac.Timothy walked me back inside so we could say goodbye to Benedict and leave.Just as we were about to go, Benedict called out to him. "Remember what I said. Go home and get rid of all those mistresses. Daphne is your responsibility, but those indecent women can forget about ever joining this family."Timothy gave a half-hearted response, and Harriett stayed silent, though her face clearly showed her displeasure.Once we stepped outside with Daphne, Harriett said, "Your granddad hasn't met Yasmin yet. He'll love her once he does. Don't take what he sai

The night breeze carried an early winter chill through the courtyard. I pulled my coat tighter around me and kept walking, my mind a heavy mess. When I reached the covered walkway, I saw Isaac leaning against the carved railing, a cigarette resting between his long fingers. As he took a drag, the ember lit up the sharp lines of his profile. There was a quiet, grounded maturity in him, like someone who had weathered more storms than most.I paused for a moment, then found myself drifting a few steps closer without thinking.Once I reached him, my throat tightened. I couldn't think of something appropriate to start the conversation.I didn't know whether to go over and greet him or just get straight to the point and ask him to keep my secret. While I debated in silence, Isaac looked over. Under the dim lights, his eyes were filled with a grief he couldn't hide. I figured that he'd heard about Diana's condition, and that was why he looked so forlorn. That was when he spoke, his voi

Timothy adjusted his composure almost instantly. Without so much as a twitch in his expression, he greeted Issac calmly. "Uncle Isaac."Isaac responded with a quiet hum, his gaze drifting toward me.I forced myself to speak. "Hello, Isaac."Benedict couldn't have been happier. "Come, come, everyone sit!" he urged warmly.Throughout dinner, he worked hard to keep the conversation flowing and lighten the atmosphere, but there was still something subtly off about the table.Benedict treated Isaac with an almost excessive fondness, constantly checking on him and offering him food, the corners of his eyes softening with a genuine smile that never once faded."Isaac, have some more. Your mother told me that this has always been your favorite."His voice held an unmistakable note of affection. "Back then, when she married me, I wanted her to bring you over, too. But she kept saying that you were still young and the Shores couldn't bear to let you go. So, I'm thrilled that you're here t
