Chapter 4
Valerie Will ~•~ “You want to get a divorce?” The words didn’t even sound right as they left my mouth. “Have you forgotten about the vows we made to each other?” Patrick didn’t hold back a scoff. “Yeah, right.” My mind was racing with different thoughts as I tried to process what was happening. It was the least of the things I expected to encounter when I came back home. I wanted to have an honest conversation with him to see what was wrong and how we would fix our issues. But Patrick didn’t want any of that. He wanted a divorce. “Why do you want to divorce? You didn’t even think to speak to me about it before deciding.” Panic surged through me, but I tried to keep my voice calm. He rolled his eyes. “Like I said earlier, there is no point in talking about it. Just sign the papers, and let’s start the divorce process.” Patrick extended the brown envelope to me, his face void of emotions. “So you expect me to just sign it without knowing the reason why you’re ending our marriage?” I stared at the envelope with disdain. He nodded. “You already know what you did, so there is no use talking about it.” His nonchalant tone made my blood boil. What was he talking about? We were adults and should be able to communicate if something was wrong. I wasn’t going to sit back and watch my marriage crumble, “Are you going through something? You know you can talk to me.” I took a step closer, examining him from head to toe. “Everything has been going well between us. What changed?” I was genuinely confused. Even if he had made up his mind to end the marriage, the least he could do was tell me the reason. Or was he just tired and looking for a silly excuse to leave? Patrick laughed. “Of course, you would want to manipulate me and make it feel like I’m the problem.” He said through gritted teeth. “Things changed after I realized you betrayed me.” My lips parted, and I blinked. “I betrayed you?” “I don’t even want to talk about it. Just sign the damn papers!” His loud voice made me flinch. What was really going on? There was a brief silence. I let out a deep sigh as I closed my eyes momentarily. “Is it because of her? Is she back?” I asked, bracing myself for the answer. “Who?” He asked without hesitation. “Madison.” Her name tasted bitter on my lips. Patrick laughed, a peal of cold and mocking laughter. “So you think I would leave you because of another woman? Madison, especially?” He asked with a chuckle. Madison was his ex-girlfriend. They almost got engaged but ended up going their separate ways. I knew how much he loved her, so I always felt insecure when it came to Maddison. Patrick had assured me several times that she was his past and nothing would make them get back together. But I couldn’t help but ask if the divorce was because of her. I mean, there was no other possible explanation. I felt embarrassed. “So if it isn’t because of her, why are you doing this?” He responded with a scoff. “Have you been listening to me all this while? This has nothing to do with me! Everything is your fault.” He exhaled heavily. “You ruined what we built over the past three years.” I was running out of patience, and the suspense was killing me. How exactly did I ruin everything? I had asked multiple times, but Patrick wouldn’t say anything. “Will you keep on beating around the bush, or will you would actually talk to me about what is going on? I’m genuinely confused.” Patrick threw his hands in the air. “Come on! Stop acting like you don’t know what I’m talking about.” My expression turned soft. “I honestly have no idea.” He paused and looked at me. “You’ve been lying to my face for so long.” He began. “You always made it seem like I was the only man in your life.” My eyebrows were etched in confusion. “Of course, you’re the only man in my life,” I assured him, but he wasn’t having it. All this time, he was talking about a betrayal. Did he mean that I cheated on him? Throughout our three years of marriage, I had never cheated on my husband. It was against my principles, and I couldn’t even imagine hurting Patrick like that. “Spare me that!” He sucked on his teeth. “I know about everything, and you don’t have to lie to me anymore.” He added as he stood up from the chair. I couldn’t even believe something like this was happening. It made no sense. It was getting frustrating. Why wouldn’t he just tell me exactly what he found? Why was he being cryptic? I had nothing to hide and was ready to defend myself. “Patrick.” I took a step closer to him. As I tried to reach out to his hands, he pulled away. “You won’t even give me the benefit of the doubt? After everything we’ve been through, you won’t listen to me?” I was hurt and disappointed at the same time. Patrick was acting differently. A part of me was starting to think that he was lying about everything. If he really found something about me that made him choose to file for a divorce, he wouldn’t hesitate to tell me about it. “I already saw all the evidence I needed.” “Wow,” I muttered, more to myself than to him. “Just sign the papers, and let’s get this over with.” I was confused about how I betrayed him. But even if Patrick didn’t want to say anything yet, I knew that the truth would eventually come to light. I couldn’t even fathom how my life would be if we went our separate ways. The thought of losing him was scary. I was still very much in love with him. “You know what?” I asked, crossing my arms against my chest defensively. “I’m not signing anything unless you tell me the reason why you’re doing this.” “Fine.” He let out a defeated sigh. “You cheated, Valerie! Why did you cheat on me?” He asked, his voice crackling slightly. Did I hear him correctly? Who did I cheat on him with? Where did he get such information from?Chapter 92Valerie Will~•~[ I just found out that I’m pregnant, please call me back.] After the text was delivered, I stared at Jamal's name on my phone, my fingers hovering around the call button. Different waves of emotions swirled through me — excitement, nervousness, and a hint of guilt. I wasn’t sure how he would react to the news. Or what it would mean for us. Letting out a deep sigh, I finally pressed the call button. The phone rang multiple times but he didn’t respond. My heart sank. Didn’t the text I sent mean anything to him? Just as I was about to drop my phone back on the table, a text came through. My heart raced as I saw it was from Jamal. [ I’m in a meeting. I’ll call you later.] For the first time after I told him about Patrick, he finally responded to my message. Maybe the child was a good thing after all. But as quickly as the hope bubbled up in my chest, doubt came crashing over. What if he was just being polite? What if the child didn’t mean anything to
Chapter 91Valerie Will~•~The sharp scent of disinfectant clawed its way into my senses, jolting me awake. As my eyes fluttered open, I saw myself in an unfamiliar room. How did I end up in the hospital? The last thing I remember was taking Liam downstairs for his birthday breakfast. I glanced around the room, but I didn’t see anybody. I tried to sit upright but was too weak to even move. What was going on? I couldn’t remember the last time I was admitted to the hospital because I barely got sick. “Nurse! Doctor!” I yelled as much as my dry throat would let me. The door opened almost instantly and a nurse rushed into the room. “You’re awake. Don’t move too much. You need to rest.” “Why? What happened to me?” I asked, my voice strained. She pressed a button on the wall. “The doctor will be here to explain everything. Just breathe, okay?” What was there to explain? I was confused about why she couldn’t just say it to me. Where was Liam? I was meant to be celebrating my son’s
Chapter 90Valerie Will~•~“Happy birthday, Liam.” I kissed him on the forehead as he opened his eyes. His lips curled into a small smile and he rubbed his eyes with his hands. “It’s already morning?” He asked, sitting upright on the bed. I nodded, a proud smile registered on my face. “Yes, baby. And it’s your birthday too.” I pulled him into a tight hug. “How does it feel being five?” Liam shrugged. “I don’t know, it feels amazing.” “I’m so proud of you.” I planted another kiss on his forehead. “You’ve grown so big.” It felt so surreal watching him grow — my little boy. I still remember the day he was born. I was alone and didn’t have anybody by my side. I kept the pregnancy a secret from everyone and fled to another city. At some point, I wondered if I had made a mistake by bringing him into a broken family. I thought I wouldn’t be able to raise him properly. But Liam turned out to be great. He was gentle, smart, and curious. He asked too many questions, loved too hard, and
Chapter 89Patrick Banks ~•~The question had knocked the breath out of me. I blinked. “What?” The doctor cleared his throat and gestured to the empty chair opposite him. “Have a seat. You need to look at this.” I sat down and he handed me a file with the test results. I didn’t even know what I was looking at. My mind kept wandering back to his question. “The test results show that you’re AB, and no child of yours can be O.” He explained when he saw how lost I looked. I closed my eyes briefly, dragging a hand down my face. “Are you trying to say Noah isn’t my son?” I asked, exhaling sharply. He nodded. “Yes, sir.” I opened my mouth to say something but no words came out. I couldn’t even think clearly. All I saw were flashes — Noah’s first birthday, the first time he called me Dad, the way Jessica had pushed for his first name to be Banks. How she swore up and down that he was mine. Everything now made sense as to why she didn’t want me to donate my blood. She looked so tense
Chapter 88Patrick Banks ~•~I was on my way out because Jessica called to say Noah had just been rushed to the hospital. But I ran into Valerie in the hallway and had to stop because her eyes looked red. I just wanted to check if she was okay. “Have you been crying? Valerie? Are you good?” I asked with a hint of concern in my voice. The last time I saw her, she was going out but refused to tell me when I asked her where she was off to. I couldn’t help but wonder what happened. She stepped back instantly as I tried to touch her. “Don’t fucking touch me.” She snapped, her gaze burning with fury. “You’ve ruined everything for me. I hate you so much.” I blinked, letting out a sharp exhale. “What are you talking about?” I asked, genuinely confused. Valerie scoffed. “You should be happy now. You’re happy now. You’ve finally gotten what you wanted.” She continued, her voice laced with disdain. I honestly had no idea what she was talking about. “I’m just concerned about you. Is eve
Chapter 87Valerie Will~•~I stood up from the bed. He took several steps back as I tried to reach out to him. “Just leave, Valerie. I don’t want to say something I’ll end up regretting.” I clutched my chest, drawing in short and trembling breaths as if the room was closing in on me. Maybe I shouldn’t have said anything. I should’ve just kept my mouth shut. Jamal was the only man who genuinely cared about me, but now I just ruined everything. What was I even thinking? My stomach tied into knots as I saw the way he looked at me. The disappointment in his eyes was sharp. “Jamal, please,” I whispered, my voice breaking. He let out a humorless laugh, dragging a hand down his face. “You made me come down here just to humiliate me? What? You wanted to see the look on my face when you told me about your betrayal? You could have just done it over the phone.” My expression crumbled. “I’m so sorry. I just wanted to be honest with you.” “Just because you’re being honest doesn’t make wha
