Chapter 4

Valerie Will

~•~

“You want to get a divorce?” The words didn’t even sound right as they left my mouth. “Have you forgotten about the vows we made to each other?”

Patrick didn’t hold back a scoff. “Yeah, right.”

My mind was racing with different thoughts as I tried to process what was happening. It was the least of the things I expected to encounter when I came back home.

I wanted to have an honest conversation with him to see what was wrong and how we would fix our issues. But Patrick didn’t want any of that. He wanted a divorce.

“Why do you want to divorce? You didn’t even think to speak to me about it before deciding.” Panic surged through me, but I tried to keep my voice calm.

He rolled his eyes. “Like I said earlier, there is no point in talking about it. Just sign the papers, and let’s start the divorce process.”

Patrick extended the brown envelope to me, his face void of emotions. “So you expect me to just sign it without knowing the reason why you’re ending our marriage?” I stared at the envelope with disdain.

He nodded. “You already know what you did, so there is no use talking about it.” His nonchalant tone made my blood boil.

What was he talking about?

We were adults and should be able to communicate if something was wrong.

I wasn’t going to sit back and watch my marriage crumble,

“Are you going through something? You know you can talk to me.” I took a step closer, examining him from head to toe. “Everything has been going well between us. What changed?”

I was genuinely confused.

Even if he had made up his mind to end the marriage, the least he could do was tell me the reason. Or was he just tired and looking for a silly excuse to leave?

Patrick laughed. “Of course, you would want to manipulate me and make it feel like I’m the problem.” He said through gritted teeth. “Things changed after I realized you betrayed me.”

My lips parted, and I blinked. “I betrayed you?”

“I don’t even want to talk about it. Just sign the damn papers!”

His loud voice made me flinch.

What was really going on?

There was a brief silence.

I let out a deep sigh as I closed my eyes momentarily. “Is it because of her? Is she back?” I asked, bracing myself for the answer.

“Who?” He asked without hesitation.

“Madison.” Her name tasted bitter on my lips.

Patrick laughed, a peal of cold and mocking laughter. “So you think I would leave you because of another woman? Madison, especially?” He asked with a chuckle.

Madison was his ex-girlfriend.

They almost got engaged but ended up going their separate ways. I knew how much he loved her, so I always felt insecure when it came to Maddison.

Patrick had assured me several times that she was his past and nothing would make them get back together. But I couldn’t help but ask if the divorce was because of her.

I mean, there was no other possible explanation.

I felt embarrassed.

“So if it isn’t because of her, why are you doing this?”

He responded with a scoff. “Have you been listening to me all this while? This has nothing to do with me! Everything is your fault.” He exhaled heavily. “You ruined what we built over the past three years.”

I was running out of patience, and the suspense was killing me. How exactly did I ruin everything? I had asked multiple times, but Patrick wouldn’t say anything.

“Will you keep on beating around the bush, or will you would actually talk to me about what is going on? I’m genuinely confused.”

Patrick threw his hands in the air. “Come on! Stop acting like you don’t know what I’m talking about.”

My expression turned soft. “I honestly have no idea.”

He paused and looked at me. “You’ve been lying to my face for so long.” He began. “You always made it seem like I was the only man in your life.”

My eyebrows were etched in confusion. “Of course, you’re the only man in my life,” I assured him, but he wasn’t having it. All this time, he was talking about a betrayal. Did he mean that I cheated on him?

Throughout our three years of marriage, I had never cheated on my husband. It was against my principles, and I couldn’t even imagine hurting Patrick like that.

“Spare me that!” He sucked on his teeth. “I know about everything, and you don’t have to lie to me anymore.” He added as he stood up from the chair.

I couldn’t even believe something like this was happening.

It made no sense. It was getting frustrating. Why wouldn’t he just tell me exactly what he found? Why was he being cryptic? I had nothing to hide and was ready to defend myself.

“Patrick.” I took a step closer to him. As I tried to reach out to his hands, he pulled away. “You won’t even give me the benefit of the doubt? After everything we’ve been through, you won’t listen to me?”

I was hurt and disappointed at the same time.

Patrick was acting differently.

A part of me was starting to think that he was lying about everything. If he really found something about me that made him choose to file for a divorce, he wouldn’t hesitate to tell me about it.

“I already saw all the evidence I needed.”

“Wow,” I muttered, more to myself than to him.

“Just sign the papers, and let’s get this over with.”

I was confused about how I betrayed him.

But even if Patrick didn’t want to say anything yet, I knew that the truth would eventually come to light.

I couldn’t even fathom how my life would be if we went our separate ways. The thought of losing him was scary. I was still very much in love with him.

“You know what?” I asked, crossing my arms against my chest defensively. “I’m not signing anything unless you tell me the reason why you’re doing this.”

“Fine.” He let out a defeated sigh. “You cheated, Valerie! Why did you cheat on me?” He asked, his voice crackling slightly.

Did I hear him correctly?

Who did I cheat on him with?

Where did he get such information from?

Chapter 166Valerie Will~•~I pulled it out of my purse and saw Patrick’s name flashing across the screen. “Where are you?” He demanded, the urgency evident in his voice. “I’m at the bridal dress shop with Blair.” Without delay, he barked. “Leave there now.” My lips parted in confusion and I blinked. “What?” “You heard me correctly, leave there right away.” Patrick practically barked his words. “Jordan isn’t associated with us anymore.” “What are you even talking about?” I took a step back, heading over to a quiet corner. “What did he do?” I asked, my heart racing. “I’m on my way home right now. I’ll explain everything to you.” “Okay, but I can’t just abandon Blair. I’ll see you later.”With that, I ended the call and turned off my phone. I didn’t want Patrick to try and convince me to leave. But I couldn’t stop wondering what must’ve happened between him and Jordan. He sounded so upset and I had never heard me speak about Jordan in that manner before. It bothered me that

Chapter 165Patrick Banks ~•~I texted Jordan to ask him where he was. After he responded, I drove over to his house. “Hey.” He said as he answered the front door. I didn’t respond. I just walked into the living room. “What’s going on?” Jordan asked with a skeptical look as he stood in front of me. “Why do you look……weird?” He added. I didn’t even know how to say what I wanted to say. I let out a deep sigh. “Is everything okay?” He continued. “Did you ask Massimo for help when Benjamin came to New York?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Did you ask them to do whatever it takes to remove him from the picture?” Jordan’s expression flattered for a brief second. Then he let out a sharp exhale and began pacing back and forth around the living room. He didn’t answer my question. I let out a deep breath. “Jordan, look me in the eyes and tell me that you aren’t responsible for my brother’s death.” I continued, my voice calm. Jordan paused and stared at me. “I’m not res

Chapter 164Patrick Banks ~•~I met Massimo at a private restaurant. As soon as I saw him, he asked his security guards to search me. “What was that for?” I asked with a bitter scoff. He adjusted his glasses. “What if you were wearing a wire and wanted to set me up?” He replied, gesturing for me to sit on the empty chair opposite him. “A wire? I’m trying to find a way to save my company and you think I’m wearing a wire?” I glared at him, still standing there. “I’m sorry. Just precautions. Nothing personal.” He offered a lame apology. “Sit and let’s talk.” I sat down and went straight to the point. “You said that I asked you to help me kill my brother?” I breathed, the words sounding hollow even to my own ears. “Nobody is listening to our conversation Patrick, you can drop the act now,” Massimo replied, his voice cold. “We did you a huge favor.” I tilted my head in confusion. “When did I come to you for help?” I asked, genuinely confused. “You’re tripping, man. Chapter 163Valerie Will~•~Jordan’s fiancée and I weren’t initially close, but after they got engaged, she started coming around more often. I got to know her and realized that she was actually a cool person. I even offered to be part of her wedding planning team, partly because I wanted to help out genuinely, and partly because I felt it was the least I could do after she helped organize that beautiful baby shower. At first, it was just about returning a favor, but somewhere along the line, I could notice that it was developing into something else. Maybe we would actually be friends. I didn’t have many friends, so I didn’t shut down the idea completely. We even had to go to the wedding dress shop for her fittings later in the day. Jordan had been nothing but wonderful to Patrick, and I wanted to support him and his new family. I knew it was a good idea to go out with everything that was going on, but I had already promised Blair that I would accompany her and wanted to keep t

Chapter 162Patrick Banks ~•~Ten million dollars? That was chump change to me. But it was still too much to throw at someone who decided to stab me in the back. I let out a scoff. “You must be out of your mind.” I couldn’t hide the irritation on my face even if I tried. Her face fell. “Do you know how risky it is for me to release a public statement saying I was just trying to frame you?” “You should have thought about the consequences before you went public with something like that … or told whoever you told.” A deep sigh escaped her lips. “Patrick, I’m sorry for exposing the truth about your company. I never wanted it to get to that point.” She continued, folding her arms around her chest. “But I need to protect myself. I need something before I can lie to ....” “Stop!” I snapped before she could complete her statement. “Don’t ever say it’s a lie anymore,” I warned, my voice low but venomous. She swallowed hard. “Fine.” “I’ll give you some money. But I’m not giving you ten

Chapter 161Patrick Banks ~•~I had no idea who texted me anonymously to rat out my former assistant, but I was grateful that the person did. However, I had to pay a huge sum of money to get the information. That wasn’t important. The only thing I wanted to do was drive over to my assistant’s house and confront her about the situation. I didn’t even contact her yet, I wanted to catch her off guard. As I drove over there, I couldn’t believe that she would betray me after so many years. But at the same time, I couldn’t even blame her. I was wrong to fire her abruptly. But I didn’t think she would sell me out like that. She knew how serious those accusations were and how they would affect the company. Still, she let her emotions get the best of her. The worst part was that I had no idea she even knew about it. Even though I thought I trusted her to an extent, I still kept my dealings with Massimo a secret. That was one of the reasons why I didn’t even want him anywhere near my c
