Chapter 76

Patrick Banks

~•~

“Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry. It’s all my fault.” My mother apologized as we rushed Liam to the hospital. “I asked to spend the day with him and I killed him.”

My mother kept on blaming herself for what happened.

“You didn’t kill him,” I told her for the umpteenth time. “Liam still has a pulse, he just passed out,” I assured her, driving as fast as I could.

I didn’t even obey all the traffic lights.

I had to get my son to the hospital as soon as possible.

To be honest, I was scared as fuck. But someone had to stay calm. I knew my mother wouldn’t stay calm, so I had to be the calm one.

Liam wasn’t sick. Valerie didn’t tell me about any terminal illness, so I was confused about why he would pass out in his sleep.

What would Valerie say if she found out about it?

I prayed silently in my heart, hoping it wasn’t anything serious. Shortly after, we arrived at the hospital. I rushed out of the car and took Liam into the building while my mother followed

Chapter 91Valerie Will~•~The sharp scent of disinfectant clawed its way into my senses, jolting me awake. As my eyes fluttered open, I saw myself in an unfamiliar room. How did I end up in the hospital? The last thing I remember was taking Liam downstairs for his birthday breakfast. I glanced around the room, but I didn’t see anybody. I tried to sit upright but was too weak to even move. What was going on? I couldn’t remember the last time I was admitted to the hospital because I barely got sick. “Nurse! Doctor!” I yelled as much as my dry throat would let me. The door opened almost instantly and a nurse rushed into the room. “You’re awake. Don’t move too much. You need to rest.” “Why? What happened to me?” I asked, my voice strained. She pressed a button on the wall. “The doctor will be here to explain everything. Just breathe, okay?” What was there to explain? I was confused about why she couldn’t just say it to me. Where was Liam? I was meant to be celebrating my son’s

Chapter 90Valerie Will~•~“Happy birthday, Liam.” I kissed him on the forehead as he opened his eyes. His lips curled into a small smile and he rubbed his eyes with his hands. “It’s already morning?” He asked, sitting upright on the bed. I nodded, a proud smile registered on my face. “Yes, baby. And it’s your birthday too.” I pulled him into a tight hug. “How does it feel being five?” Liam shrugged. “I don’t know, it feels amazing.” “I’m so proud of you.” I planted another kiss on his forehead. “You’ve grown so big.” It felt so surreal watching him grow — my little boy. I still remember the day he was born. I was alone and didn’t have anybody by my side. I kept the pregnancy a secret from everyone and fled to another city. At some point, I wondered if I had made a mistake by bringing him into a broken family. I thought I wouldn’t be able to raise him properly. But Liam turned out to be great. He was gentle, smart, and curious. He asked too many questions, loved too hard, and

Chapter 89Patrick Banks ~•~The question had knocked the breath out of me. I blinked. “What?” The doctor cleared his throat and gestured to the empty chair opposite him. “Have a seat. You need to look at this.” I sat down and he handed me a file with the test results. I didn’t even know what I was looking at. My mind kept wandering back to his question. “The test results show that you’re AB, and no child of yours can be O.” He explained when he saw how lost I looked. I closed my eyes briefly, dragging a hand down my face. “Are you trying to say Noah isn’t my son?” I asked, exhaling sharply. He nodded. “Yes, sir.” I opened my mouth to say something but no words came out. I couldn’t even think clearly. All I saw were flashes — Noah’s first birthday, the first time he called me Dad, the way Jessica had pushed for his first name to be Banks. How she swore up and down that he was mine. Everything now made sense as to why she didn’t want me to donate my blood. She looked so tense

Chapter 88Patrick Banks ~•~I was on my way out because Jessica called to say Noah had just been rushed to the hospital. But I ran into Valerie in the hallway and had to stop because her eyes looked red. I just wanted to check if she was okay. “Have you been crying? Valerie? Are you good?” I asked with a hint of concern in my voice. The last time I saw her, she was going out but refused to tell me when I asked her where she was off to. I couldn’t help but wonder what happened. She stepped back instantly as I tried to touch her. “Don’t fucking touch me.” She snapped, her gaze burning with fury. “You’ve ruined everything for me. I hate you so much.” I blinked, letting out a sharp exhale. “What are you talking about?” I asked, genuinely confused. Valerie scoffed. “You should be happy now. You’re happy now. You’ve finally gotten what you wanted.” She continued, her voice laced with disdain. I honestly had no idea what she was talking about. “I’m just concerned about you. Is eve

Chapter 87Valerie Will~•~I stood up from the bed. He took several steps back as I tried to reach out to him. “Just leave, Valerie. I don’t want to say something I’ll end up regretting.” I clutched my chest, drawing in short and trembling breaths as if the room was closing in on me. Maybe I shouldn’t have said anything. I should’ve just kept my mouth shut. Jamal was the only man who genuinely cared about me, but now I just ruined everything. What was I even thinking? My stomach tied into knots as I saw the way he looked at me. The disappointment in his eyes was sharp. “Jamal, please,” I whispered, my voice breaking. He let out a humorless laugh, dragging a hand down his face. “You made me come down here just to humiliate me? What? You wanted to see the look on my face when you told me about your betrayal? You could have just done it over the phone.” My expression crumbled. “I’m so sorry. I just wanted to be honest with you.” “Just because you’re being honest doesn’t make wha

Chapter 86Valerie Will~•~My hands were clammy with sweat as I drove over to Jamal’s hotel. We already planned to see each other a while back before everything happened. I thought about canceling it, but what could I possibly use as an excuse? I just decided to let him come and also be honest with him about everything. The thought of it was scary, but I was tired of living with such a heavy guilt. I had no idea how he would react, but I hoped he would find a way to forgive me. As I pulled up at the parking lot, I texted him to let him know that I had arrived. In less than five minutes, he met me at the reception and ushered me to his room. “Hey, I missed you.” He pulled me closer as soon as the door was shut. His lips met mine and he kissed me passionately. I savored the moment and pulled him closer. Who knows if it was going to be our last kiss? I mean, I was about to tell him what happened with Patrick. It might be the end of our relationship. “I missed you too.” I let out
