Sophia exhaled deeply, feeling the weight of her mother’s question settle over her. Catherine’s tired yet penetrating gaze bore into her as if peeling away her attempts to be vague. She wanted to keep the details about Alexander private for now because she hardly knew if he was trustworthy herself. But her mother knew her too well; there was no escaping.

Her voice softened. “Mom, I... It's just a friend,” she began, choosing her words carefully, her tone measured. “A good friend who helped me.”

Catherine’s brows knitted together in that familiar, knowing way, even in her weakened state. “A friend who’s done so much? Come on, Sophia. Tell me, is it a man?”

Sophia flushed, quickly averting her gaze. Ethan, catching his sister’s discomfort, chimed in. “Mom, let’s just trust Soph, okay? Besides, anything’s better than being tied to that scumbag Marcus and his family”

Sophia shot him a grateful look, appreciating the lifeline. She knew her family’s love was deep, even if they didn’t

“What guy, Marcus?” Lauren asked, raising an eyebrow. Marcus’s face twisted with frustration. “I don’t know. I’ve been trying to force Sophia back on my terms, but somehow, someone keeps getting in my way.” Evelyn’s gaze softened slightly with pity. “Marcus, you were her husband. Although I don't know why Dad insists you get her back, it shouldn’t be that hard for you. But whoever is helping her must have significant influence if they can act so quickly. And that is if it's the same person” Lauren rolled her eyes, her tone mocking. “Please. Vision Care is one of the most reputable hospitals in the country. They wouldn’t let anyone ruin their reputation. We were just unlucky, that’s all.” Marcus’s shoulders relaxed, but there was a flicker of something unsettling in his gaze. “But why is Sophia always this lucky?” He shook his head, deep in thought. This was my opportunity to force her back and she just got lucky? Evelyn interrupted his thoughts with a wry smile and her tone d

“Marcus, what do you want?” Her tone was guarded, clipped. “Sophia, please stop ignoring me,” Marcus’s voice was pleading, and his desperation was evident. “I… I need to talk to you. I can’t stop thinking about what we had. Can’t we… can’t we try again?” Sophia’s fingers tightened around the phone. “We’re already done, Marcus. You know that.” He tried again, his voice growing even more insistent. “Sophia, I’m willing to give you anything you want. I’ll change, I swear. Grandpa even agreed to give you shares in the company if you’ll just…” “I’m not interested,” she interrupted with disdain in her voice. “You could offer me your entire company, and it wouldn’t make a difference.” There was a pause, and then Marcus’s voice softened. “Please, Sophia. Just… can we at least meet and talk? I’ll do anything.” She was about to reject the suggestion when Alexander gave a curt nod, indicating that she should agree. Sophia was shocked but complied, “Fine,” she replied, resigned. “Whe

Alexander helped Sophia into his car, his arms wrapped protectively around her as he guided her gently into the seat. She leaned against him, her fingers drifting over his chest. The drug's effect had taken full hold now; her gaze was unfocused, her eyes glazed with a yearning she couldn’t seem to control. "Alexander… please, I feel so hot…" she whispered breathily, looking up at him with a longing that made her reach up to touch his face, her fingers tracing his jawline. A soft murmur escaped her lips, her face drawing closer. "Help me… please." He swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he fought his own desire. Her touch was electric, sending a shiver down his spine, but he knew her state. He couldn’t take advantage of her, no matter how tempting it was. The driver glanced at the rearview mirror, catching sight of Sophia pressing herself against his boss, whispering incoherently as she kissed his neck. Alexander shot a sharp glare toward him, catching his eyes. "One more loo

Sophia blinked slowly, adjusting to the soft light filtering into the room. She felt the unfamiliar comfort of the bed beneath her and noted the elegant ceiling with its polished chandelier, far too refined for her usual surroundings. Sunlight slipped through sheer curtains, casting delicate patterns across the floor. Her heart pounded as she took in her surroundings, trying to piece together how she’d ended up here. Memories from the previous night were foggy, just flashes at best. A note on the bedside table caught her eye. Reaching over, her hand shook slightly as she picked it up. The handwriting was cold, detached, yet unmistakably his. “Sorry for putting you in danger. I'll make them pay heavily.” “Your breakfast will be ready when you wake up. The car will be waiting outside.” It was Alexander’s writing. She smiled at first, but then, a rush of memories struck like lightning, freezing her expression. Fragmented memories began to surface: going with Alexander to meet his

Sophia left the hotel and upon reaching the exit, she found a driver waiting. When he saw her, he got out of the car and motioned for her to get in. “Mrs Evans, please get in.” “Thank you.” She thanked him hopping into the car before adding. “I'm going to visit my mom.” The driver nodded and started the car towards the Vision Care hospital. 40 minutes later the car pulled off at the gate of the hospital. She got out and thanked the driver before rushing inside. She walked into her mother's room and saw her at the edge of the bed, looking healthier than she’d seen her in weeks. Sophia was filled with warmth and relief as she observed her. The usual pallor on her face was replaced with a healthier hue, and her eyes sparkled with a strength that hadn’t been there before. "Mom, you’re looking amazing!" Sophia beamed as she leaned down to hug her mother, who squeezed her tightly. "That’s what I’ve been saying to these doctors. I’m perfectly fine now, and it’s high time they l

"Oh, please, since when is love boring?" Her mother gave her a knowing look, gently patting Sophia’s hand. "But fine, I won’t pry. Go on then, leave me here with nothing but doctors for company." Sophia laughed, giving her mother a playful hug. "Ethan should be here soon. He’ll keep you company. Just… be patient, okay?" With a playful wave and a final hug, she left the room, unaware of the crisis the Hawthornes were facing. As she left the hospital, a slight smile played on her lips. She was about to hail a cub when the driver from earlier hurriedly called her. “Mrs Evans.” He nodded at her and motioned for her to get into the waiting car. Sophia was surprised to see him. “Why are you here…? Wait, you didn't leave?” She asked, raising her eyebrows as she observed that the car was packed exactly where she had left it hours ago when he dropped her off. “I was waiting for you,” he responded professionally. “Mr. Evans assigned me as your driver from now on.” “What?” Sophia's

After a while, she gathered her courage and broke the silence. “I’m… going for an interview tomorrow,” she said softly, glancing up. “At Allure Fashion.” Alexander looked up, his expression unreadable. “That’s good,” he said, his gaze steady. “Do you need my help?” Sophia’s heart skipped a beat. The thought of him, Alexander, using his influence to help her was… tempting. She remembered how he’d handled the Hawthornes. It had taken him mere hours to dismantle an entire corporation. She hesitated, torn between the easy road and her pride. “No,” she finally said, shaking her head. “I want to do it on my own. Only my efforts should help me.” Alexander studied her for a moment, a glimmer of admiration in his eyes. He didn’t press her, just nodded slightly, as though respecting her decision. But there was a hint of expectation in his gaze, as if waiting for her to ask him anyway. She faltered under his intense gaze, then added with a shy smile, “But… can you pray for me? Wish me l

When the door closed behind him, the woman muttered under her breath, "What’s there to panic about? Unless you’re not qualified." After 20 minutes, the employee returned, calling out, "Samantha LeClerc?" Samantha stood up with a prideful smile, but there was something in her posture that suggested she already had the job. "Wish me luck," she said to no one in particular, then followed the employee into the interview room. Sophia was left alone for a few more minutes, her nerves returning in full force. She stood up and paced slightly, trying to calm herself. Finally, the door opened 20 minutes later, and the same employee called her name, "Sophia Blackwell?" Her heart jumped in her chest. "Here goes," she whispered under her breath. *** Meanwhile, somewhere in the city, Marcus lay on the bed, his arm loosely around Lila as she nestled against his chest. The weight of his family’s crisis should have sobered him, but old habits die hard. Lila traced circles on his shoulder,

Over the next few days, Sophia was busy finalizing her drafts for the competition. Alexander got busy with his work too, and surprisingly, he hadn't heard from Jessica since that night. He had done a lot in cornering Gerald, making it hard for him to make a move. On this day, he was standing by the window of his office, his eyes cast over the view of Eldridge City. He could see almost three-quarters of the city from his office. But his mind was consumed with other matters. The city view didn’t catch his attention at all. A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. “Come in,” he said, still looking outside. Mark, his able assistant, walked in with an iPad in hand. “Boss, the investigation about Larry is done and the information has been compiled. Should we send it to him?” Mark asked, scrolling through the data. Alexander turned around, tucking his hands in his pants pockets. “There’s no rush. Wait for the right time,” he said, walking back to his desk. “Alright, boss,” Ma

Once inside, Nina saw an elegant looking young woman, probably in her twenties, adjusting her makeup in the washroom mirror. She looked like the kind of woman who never checks price tags because everything about her screamed wealthy. She was dressed in a silky white blouse tucked neatly into caramel-colored trousers that hugged her just right. Her heels were sharp, shiny, and expensive. Even her designer handbag, resting by the sink, looked like it had its own security detail. Her makeup was impossible to miss; long lashes, bold red lips, heavy eyeliner, and skin so smooth it looked airbrushed. Her black hair hung straight and sleek down her back, parted perfectly in the middle. She didn’t need to say anything. Just standing there, fixing her lipstick in the mirror, she looked like someone who was used to getting her way.***Meanwhile, in the tallest building in Eldridge City, the Evans Tower, Alexander sat at his desk as he listened to Mark deliver the financial reports. After Mark

After a brief chat and a few hugs, Alexander and Sophia walked off toward their car. A man in black opened the door for them as the sleek vehicle purred to life and pulled away slowly.Amelia and Michael remained behind watching their car until it disappeared.“You missed your chance to score a hug,” Michael teased.Amelia rolled her eyes. “And you missed your chance to shut up.”“Okay, ma’am. “What is it?” He turned around, eyeing her vigilantly.“Can you promise me that no one will ever find out about this, please? Not even Sophia,” she requested.Alexander paused, overwhelmed with guilt. If he had been more careful, none of this would have happened.“Okay, you have my word,” he promised and left the room.As the door clicked shut, Jessica’s trembling lips slowly curled into a cunning smile.“And the game has just begun. Sophia... I hope you’re ready, darling,” she whispered, wiping away her fake tears.By the time Alexander settled, it was already past 1 AM. He checked his phone and was shocked to find several missed calls from Sophia.“Oh no, I forgot to update her!” he mumbled, his muscles tensing as he raked a hand through his hair.It was too late to call her now! With a heavy sigh, he sent her a text:‘Hi honey, I hope you’re doing well. Sorry, I had an emergency to deal with and I couldn’t answer your calls. Talk tomorrow. Goodnight. I love you!’After that, he dia

Back in Sadrova restaurant, Alexander emerged from the bathroom after several knocks on the door.He wrapped a towel around his waist and opened the door.Tim hurried in with his bag. He looked just like any other thirty-year-old guy who happened to be on duty. His white doctor’s coat was slightly creased like he’d rushed out of the hospital without a second thought. Underneath, he had on a black T-shirt and jeans, just something comfortable for a long shift. A stethoscope still hung around his neck, probably out of habit more than anything. His glasses gave him a smart, slightly serious look, but there was an easygoing air about him.“What took you so long?” Alexander asked, masking the discomfort in his body."I left my patients waiting just to come here, and you're complaining?" Tim asked casually, placing his bag on the couch.Alexander just snorted, glaring at him before making his way to the couch.Tim didn’t waste time once he saw Alexander’s condition. Alexander closed his eyes tightly, unwilling to look at her. Images of Sophia flooded his mind.“No, I can’t let this happen. She tried to resist but this time, Alexander shoved her harder, and she fell from the bed.He didn't even spare her a glance; he quickly bent toward the bedside table, grabbed his phone, and staggered out of the room.He struggled to walk in the hallway, holding on to the wall for support. When he reached the next suite, he found a couple holding each other as they were about to make their way in.The man opened the door with a gentlemanly smile, signaling to the lady to get in first. Before the woman could react, Alexander snatched the room card and staggered inside leaving the words, “Sorry, I need to use the room.”Before the man could react, he had already locked the door from the inside.“Damn it!” The man

Meanwhile, back in Hawthorne's ancestral home, Marcus knocked on his grandpa's bedroom, casually tucking his other hand into his pants pocket. After Raphael murmured from inside, he pushed the door open and walked inside. The room was dimly lit, with a bedside lamp casting a soft amber glow over the space. The air held a comforting mix of lavender and woody from the old oak furniture.A large, neatly made bed stood against the far wall, its thick duvet turned down slightly, perhaps he was ready for bedtime. An antique clock ticked quietly on the wall, and a pair of slippers sat perfectly aligned by the edge of a plush rug.Raphael was seated on a couch near the window with a steaming cup of tea on the small table in front of him. Despite the warmth in the room, he had a shawl draped over his shoulders, and the lines on his face seemed deeper under the soft light. He seemed to have aged more since the last time Marcus saw him. “Grandpa,” he greeted.“Sit,” Raphael said, pointing at t

He had just remembered it was supposed to be Mark's off day. “Thank you, boss.” Mark nodded happily before walking out, knowing that his boss didn't blame him. “You're the pride of the Hawthornes, my dear. That Sophia was our bad luck; Look at how we're prospering now that she's gone. My son is more accomplished now that she isn't here to drag him behind.” Evelyn clapped like a child who just won a prize, her eyes glowing with pride. She walked over to Marcus and patted his shoulder like he’d just won a major award. “I’m so proud of you, son.” “Marcus, I hope you're not still dreaming of bringing her back,” Lauren scoffed, tilting her chin up in distaste. Marcus leaned back lazily, his arms spread across the back of the couch. He smirked, brushing invisible dust from his shirt like a king making a declaration. “Sophia will be mine sooner or later..." “Marcus, you're just digging your own grave. Go see your grandpa now.” His father's angry voice came from upstairs interrupting them. “So it's true you don't believe in me, Dad. Is that why you stepped down?” Marcus turned to him with his face full of disappointment. His fathe
