Cassandra’s POV

“Cassandra? Dear? Sorry to bother you. I know you must be very busy.”

Blaire Montgomery’s voice came through loud and clear. Even her voice oozed wealth and nobility. I tried not to let my thoughts spin. There were tons of reasons she could be calling. Maybe she wanted to change one of her dresses? Heck, maybe she wanted to order MORE dresses. I was likely just overreacting.

I was under a lot of stress and relying heavily on Blaire’s dress orders to partially pay off the loan. She’d ordered seven custom dresses, and she was sparing no expense. She required the finest silks and most delicate laces. I had to ship in fabrics from all over the world.

I’d never designed a dress for royalty before, not to mention SEVEN of them. I’d done a ton of research, drawing inspiration from pictures of the most elite galas and balls. I wasn’t sure what Blaire Montgomery was a Dutchess of. I’d never asked. She’d just emailed me out of the blue

Cassandra’s POV “I don’t understand,” I said, shaking my head. What did he mean ‘I was in the will?’ “Who is it?” Stella mouthed to me. I clamped my hand over the receiver. “It’s a lawyer,” I told her. “He said I’m in Stanley’s will.” “What?” Stella asked, her eyes growing wide. I shrugged. “I think you might be mistaken,” I told the man, Larry. “I assure you I’m not,” he replied. “Someone should have contacted you about this. I guess it was an oversight on our part. But you are most definitely in the will, Cassandra. And as such, we need you present for the reading of the will. We’re hoping to have the reading on Thursday, 9am. Does that work for you? It will be at our office. I can forward you our address.” My mind was reeling. Why was I in Stanley’s will? That didn’t make any sense. Jordyn and I had divorced. I was no longer family. Stanley knew that. Why would he put me in his will?

Cassandra’s POV That following Saturday, the four of us showed up at the Continental cup, Stella and I donning large-brimmed hats.I’d never been to a horse race before. Neither had Stella. We were both very excited.“I can’t believe he bought you a fucking horse,” Stella said, her arm linked in mine. “I mean, come on. I love Cameron and all, but could Dillon BE any more perfect?”I giggled. Stella was right. Dillon was pretty perfect. I’d harbored fantasies of owning my own horse for an entire year after the visit that summer when I was twelve. Not only had Dillon remembered, he’d gone out and bought me a horse, just to make that fantasy come true. And not just any horse. A thorough bred, racing horse.“Which one is yours?” Stella asked as we approached the stands. All the horses were parading around the race track, the jockeys on their backs.“I’m actually not sure,” I said, turning to Dillon. “Which horse is mine?” Dillon pointed to a gorgeous horse with a deep brown c

Cassandra’s POV I arrived at Dillon’s, bottle of wine in hand, feeling exhausted and stressed out. I was looking forward to a nice quiet night vegging on the couch and binging Netflix. But from the moment I stepped outside, it appeared Dillon had other plans. Don’t get me wrong, I was touched. He’d clearly gone through a lot of effort. I just hadn’t been expecting it. And I was really, really tired. Between the meeting with Stella about the expansion and my phone call with Blaire Montgomery, it had been a long day.Dillon was watching me though, waiting for my reaction. So I flashed him a bright smile.“What’s all this?” I asked, pushing aside my fatigue. We bantered playfully about it being only a Tuesday night. He told me we were celebrating me. Then he opened a bottle of Dom.Dinner was delicious of course. Everything Dillon cooked was delicious. And the sweet scent of the fresh flowers mingled with the air. The sun set and Dillon lit candles and turned on tw

Dillon’s POV I put the lobster tails under the broiler and watched them like a hawk. I couldn’t risk them burning. When they were done, I arranged them on the pates, along with oysters on a half shell, feta cheese stuffed tomatoes, and Cobb salad. Then I brought it all outside. Cassandra would be arriving any moment, and I wanted to surprise her with an elegant dinner outside. It had been warming up over the past few weeks, so I opted for a cold dinner. That way, we could take our time and not worry about the food getting cold. The table looked pretty good, if I did say so myself. I’d gone to the florist and bought several lavish bouquets for ambiance. I had candles waiting, as well as twinkle lights, for when dusk came. I hummed to myself as I put on the final touches. Cassandra had been working really hard ever since we got back from Bora Bora. And Stanley’s death had taken a real toll on her. I knew she cared about him, and she was griev

Cassandra’s POV “Cassandra?” Stella said, searching my face. “Is something wrong? I know this is a lot to process, but I expected you to be at least a bit excited. Instead, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.” My face was pale. I was sure of it. My palms were sweaty and my heart was racing. Stella’s plan was so well thought out and so well-executed. And it all would have worked but… I’d taken out a massive loan and we owed the bank a lot of money. I didn’t know what to do. I wanted this as badly as Stella but I didn’t know how to tell her that our funds were currently tied up. Maybe if I could just stall? If I could convince her to put off this expansion, just for a little while longer. Just until I completed some big orders and the clients paid. Then I could square off the loan and we’d have the money to make this dream a reality. “Stella, this is amazing,” I told her, choosing my words carefully. She let ou
