The email came three days after the mixer, forwarded from Daxton with a short note above it. *This is Marta, she runs a bakery supply company, needs someone to review a distribution contract before she signs. I told her you're the best I know. Don't make me a liar.*

I read it twice, sitting at my desk by the window, and felt something unfamiliar rise up in my chest, something that had been buried so long under fear and survival that I almost didn't recognize it right away.

"What clause?" Jason asked.Marcus opened his folder and took out a page stapled to a cover sheet."The district attorney's auditors went through the Crane family agreements looking for anything connected to Cordelia's discretionary account. They flagged this as an unexplained liability. Nobody could determine what it was for."He placed it on the coffee table. Jason leaned forward, and Daxton and I did the same.Amendment Nine to the Crane Family Holdings Agreement. There was a date and a signature at the bottom. Jason went still before anyone even told him whose signature it was."Dated nine months after your accident," Marcus said. "Your father signed it. He died two years later.""I know when he died.""Read the second paragraph."Jason read it aloud slowly, as though he didn't trust his own eyes."'Should the person who rendered aid to my son on the night of the accident ever be identified, that person, and the descendants of that person, shall receive twenty percent of all Crane

My hand went to my collar before I could stop it, the moon was warm from my skin."Why?" I said."Please," Jason said. "Just tell me where you got it."He wasn't asking the way he had when he questioned me about Rowan. This time, his voice was quiet and hesitant, almost fearful, as though he was afraid of what my answer might be. Daxton had released both of us and was now silently watching our exchange."I found it," I said slowly. "A long time ago. Before I ever met you.""Where?""On a road outside the city. It was storming. A car was upside down in a ditch, and there was a man inside. I pulled him out."The room went completely quiet. Marcus had stopped writing."What did the car look like?" Jason's voice had dropped almost to nothing."Dark. Low. I couldn't tell the make. The rain was too heavy.""Can I see the clasp?"I lifted the chain over my head and put it in his hand. He didn't look at the moon, he turned the clasp over and ran his thumb along the last two links."This link

I opened the door. Marcus held out the envelope as if it might still be warm."The courier brought it to my office at eleven," he said. "I haven't touched the seal."Jason stood a step behind him in the hallway. He was wearing the same suit he'd had on Thursday. Either he'd slept in it or hadn't slept at all."Come in," I said.Dana had taken Rowan to the park at ten. Around eleven thirty, she'd sent me a photo of him sitting on a carousel horse, one fist raised in the air. Daxton had asked for adults only today. He was on the couch with his elbows on his knees. He'd been there since seven, a pot of coffee sat on the table, cold and untouched.Marcus placed the envelope on the coffee table. Jason walked to the window and stood with his hands in his pockets. He took them out, put them back, then pulled the armchair closer and sat down."Who opens it?" Marcus asked."Both of us," Daxton said. They each took one corner of the flap and tore it open together. Marcus turned toward the wall.

The driver cleared his throat. "Folks? Light's green.""Hotel," Daxton said. That was all he said until we got into the elevator. In the room he stood in the middle of the carpet, not sitting, not taking off his jacket."I'm going," he said."Okay.""Not alone. I want Marcus there. I want her lawyer there. I want you.""Why me?""any time I picture walking into that house, I see my mom pushing a mop across a floor at two in the morning, and I can't breathe." He rubbed his face. "Then I picture you next to me, and I can."I took his hand. It was shaking a little. "I'll be there."Marcus set it up for Friday at two. Dana came over to stay with Rowan, who was building a shark out of pillows and wanted to know if sharks had to go to meetings too.The gate guard waved our car through without calling ahead this time. I noticed that. So did Daxton.A man in a gray suit met us at the front door and introduced himself as Theodore Marsh, the family's lawyer. He shook Marcus's hand, then Daxton'

The clinic was ten minutes from the hotel. It was on the second floor of a building that also had a dentist's office and a pharmacy. Marcus had called ahead, so a nurse was waiting for us at the desk. She greeted us, took her clipboard, and led us into a small waiting room with six chairs and a fish tank.Jason took the chair by the window. Daxton took the one farthest from it. I sat between them because nobody told me not to. Marcus stood by the door with his folder, the way he did at every difficult moment, as if standing there was part of his job.Nobody spoke. The fish tank bubbled. Jason's knee bounced, stopped, then started again."The glove," he said finally.Daxton looked over. "What?""The one on your lap in the car. What kind was it?""Oh." Daxton almost smiled. "Rawlings. Frank bought it used at a yard sale. Two dollars. It was too big, but I wore it anyway."Jason nodded slowly. "Mine was new. He bought it the week after we got back from Ohio. I've thought about that a lot

Daxton barely slept on Tuesday or Wednesday night. I heard him get up at three both mornings and sit by the window with the lights off, I didn't ask. When he wanted to talk, he would. On Thursday at ten, he sat beside me on the hotel couch, his hands folded between his knees. Marcus sat in the chair across from us. Dana had taken Rowan to the aquarium, she'd promised him sharks.Jason knocked at 9:58.Marcus let him in. He wore a dark suit without a tie, his collar open, like a man who had put one on and then taken it off again. He carried a thin folder, he didn't sit until Marcus nodded toward the armchair."Thank you for letting me come," he said."Marcus said you wanted to show us something."He opened the folder and placed the papers on the coffee table. Acknowledgment of Paternity. His name was neatly typed on a line that had never been signed."My mother's lawyer drew this up. I took it off her desk on Saturday." He picked up the top page and tore it in half, then he tore it in

I don't even remember how I got out of Jason’s office. One minute I was looking at the man I loved handing me divorce papers the next, I was trapped inside the elevator, staring at my reflection in the mirrored walls. The woman looking back at me was a stranger, her lipstick was smeared, her eyes wer

I spent most of my wedding pretending I wasn't terrified. The fake smile on my face must have been convincing enough because nobody questioned it,guests toasted us, cameras flashed, and champagne flowed like water.Everyone kept gushing about what a perfect couple we made.
