Kayla’s POV

The studio lights were brighter than I expected. They were the sort of lights that made your eyes water if you stared at them directly, and unfortunately, they were pointed right at me.

I sat on the high stool with my back straight, hands folded on my lap, pretending I was comfortable. The interviewer smiled at me like we were old friends, even though we had not spoken beyond a polite hello.

  • Divorced And Out of His League   Chapter 79

Kayla’s POVThe studio lights were brighter than I expected. They were the sort of lights that made your eyes water if you stared at them directly, and unfortunately, they were pointed right at me.I sat on the high stool with my back straight, hands folded on my lap, pretending I was comfortable. The interviewer smiled at me like we were old friends, even though we had not spoken beyond a polite hello. There were cameras on three different sides of the small studio and several people moving quietly around, adjusting equipment, whispering instructions, and signaling to each other. When the host turned toward me, I forced a relaxed expression even though my stomach felt tight.“So Miss Kayla,” he began, his voice smooth and crisp for television, “you are returning to the tracks after weeks of your initial race. How does it feel to be back?”I took a breath, not too deep so I would not sound nervous. “It feels good

  • Divorced And Out of His League   Chapter 78

Kayla’s POVFive days. It had been exactly five days since I last spoke with my private investigator. Five days since I had instructed him to scrape through every possible crack in Vivian Ward’s life in search of something, anything that would link her to the murder of the woman called Mel. And for five long days, he had returned with empty hands.Every morning he sent a message saying the same thing.Nothing yet ma.Still searching ma.We are trying.Today’s message came half an hour ago. It was almost identical to the others, so that was when I realized that I was already losing interest in his weak capabilities. I needed results, not endless trying. As I tightened the straps of my running sneakers, I felt the weight of another thought: today was another training day for the race. And tomorrow would be the actual event. I would be seeing Vivian. The thought alone made my teeth clench.I had spent the last fi

Steven’s POVThe water hit my back in steady streams, warm enough to sting slightly where my skin was still tender. I stood there longer than necessary, eyes closed, forehead resting against the tile, letting the sound drown out my thoughts even though it never really worked.Time did not dull what had happened. It sharpened it.Twenty four hours ago, someone had tried to erase me from the world like I was a mistake on paper. And when the phone rang afterward, when that calm feminine voice asked if it was done, I had felt something colder than fear settle in my chest.I had not answered her.I listened, I breathed deeply, and then I ended the call. The silence afterward had been worse than any threat.I shut off the water and stepped out, the room fogged and quiet. My reflection looked unfamiliar. The stitches at my hairline were clean, but the bruises beneath my eyes had darkened. Pain was there if I went looking for it, but it

  • Divorced And Out of His League   Chapter 76

Kayla’s POVThe bar was dim, the low hum of music and chatter around me barely registering. I hadn’t spoken a word since Ashton had led me to the booth. My thoughts were elsewhere, spinning around the woman who had been killed—Mel.I tried to narrow down who could have done it by ruling out those who weren’t at the hotel inauguration that night. A few names immediately came off the list. They should have been there, yet weren’t.And then there was Vivian. Of course, she was on my radar. She had been all over the racing fundraiser, posting about me online, stirring whispers and gossip. Every action of hers seemed like a calculated push against me, trying to make me stumble, to make me look guilty in the public eye.I barely noticed Ashton leaning across the table, his brows furrowed, watching me.“You okay?” he asked, voice careful.“I’m fine,” I said quickly, forcing a smile.

  • Divorced And Out of His League   Chapter 75

Kayla’s POVThe driver pulled into the parking lot of the media building and my heart already felt too heavy for my chest. As soon as the car stopped, I stared out at the tall glass doors and the bold logo above them. Cameras. Reporters. Bright lights. Questions that feel like bullets.I closed my eyes for a second.I should not be here. I knew that. Anyone with common sense would tell me to go home, sit quietly, and wait for the internet to move on. But how could I? How could I sit back and stay silent while Vivian, of all people, used her platform to spit poison about me?No. Not today.I opened the door and stepped out. The cold air brushed against my skin and snapped me fully awake. A few staff members outside looked startled when they recognized me. One whispered to another before rushing inside. I already knew what that meant.By the time I entered the building, the entire hallway was buzzing. A tall man in a headset practically flew in my direction.“Miss Brooks. My God. We had

Steven’s POVI keep driving without turning my head, without slowing down, without doing anything that makes it obvious that I have noticed the black sedan behind me. It has been shadowing me for a while now, keeping a respectful distance, never too close, never too far. If I did not know better, I would think it was a coincidence or just regular traffic flow. But I do know better. My gut has been screaming at me since I left the restaurant.I tap my fingers lightly on the steering wheel just to keep my nerves from locking up. I try to focus on the road signs, on the lights, on pedestrians crossing for lunch runs. Normal things. Safe things. The kind of things that keep me from taking a turn that might get me boxed into an alley or an empty road where someone like that could make me disappear without witnesses.“Think,” I mutter under my breath. “Think.”I am good with hand-to-hand combat. I am decent with weapons. But I am not trained for car chases. And there is a huge difference b

Kayla’s POVThe sky was already dark when I got home. The rain hadn’t stopped since morning. It fell harder now, like the heavens themselves were mocking me. My clothes were soaked, my hair clinging to my face as I stumbled inside, shutting the door behind me.The house… our house… felt different.

  • Divorced And Out of His League   Chapter 2

Kayla’s POVThe sound of rain is the first thing I hear when I open my eyes. It’s morning, but the world outside looks gray. The curtains are drawn halfway, letting in a sliver of light that falls across the table, the plates from last night still untouched, the wine glass half empty, the necklace

  • Divorced And Out of His League   Chapter 1

Kayla POVThe steak had gone cold two hours ago. The candles I lit with excitement now burned low and uneven, wax dripping down like tears onto the white tablecloth. The wine sat untouched beside two crystal glasses, and the roses I spent thirty minutes arranging this morning were already beginnin

  • Divorced And Out of His League   Chapter 5

Kayla’s POVFour years later.Sometimes, I wonder if the woman I used to be would even recognize me now.Back then, I was soft… always waiting, hoping, forgiving. Now, I’m steel beneath silk. Still kind, but never naive. The world broke me once. I rebuilt myself with the pieces. The morning sunligh
