The courtroom doesn’t feel the same way it did earlier when we return back inside. It’s not about the noise and chaos as everyone settles down, and neither is it about how I feel mixed with the anxiety of how this might end. It’s just about the whole vibe of the place. It’s like everyone has seen something they weren't supposed to see and now doesn't quite know where to look.Pushing the thoughts away, I take my seat beside Nathaniel who leans down and drops a small kiss to the side of my head. The action sends warmth through my chest, and I look up at him, my lips curving into a forced smile that doesn’t reach my eyes. When he smiles back at me, I turn my attention towards where Adrian, his lawyer, Karen, and Vivienne are now seated, looking uncomfortable and out of place. Vivienne is seated beside Adrian, but he isn’t acknowledging her. Even when she leans in to say something to him quietly, he doesn’t say anything or even look like he’s being spoken to. And even when she rea
The second the judge calls for recess, the courtroom comes alive again. People rise from their seats, lawyers gather files, and voices begin to fill the room with chaos as the crowd leaves. Beside me, Elara stands up, and I look at her, a brow lifting. She looks at me. “Excuse me,” she says. “I need to use the bathroom.”Once I nod, she takes that as an indication to leave. Only when she walks out of the courtroom do I look away from her towards the now empty judge’s seat, my jaw clenching. I know she’s not just using the bathroom for using sake. She’s probably going to bawl out her eyes there. I’m tempted to follow her just to make sure she’s okay, but a small voice at the back of my mind says not to, to give her privacy.Reluctantly, I remain where I am. Before I can stop myself, I look towards Adrian’s side of the courtroom to find him still seated there, his attention fixed on the space where the projector has gone blank. The footage might be over, but it’s clear the damage
“This court is not being asked to erase anything,” is the first thing Laurent says the moment Adrian’s lawyer keeps quiet. He steps forward so he’s now closer to the judge. “It is only being asked to weigh safety.” Silence follows, and he continues. “And I would remind the court that custody is not awarded based on duration of care alone.”From the corner of my eyes, I see Adrian try to stand up, ready to defend himself, but Vivienne grabs his arm immediately, forcing him to sit. My attention is now on them, and though I can’t hear what she’s saying because of the distance between us, I can tell she’s trying to calm him. As if he can feel my attention, his gaze drifts towards me, now filled with malice before he turns again with a quiet scoff. I turn too, just as Laurent says, “custody is awarded based on the ability to prevent harm.”The judge nods, her pen paused in her hand as she listens to him attentively. “And look, when harm has already occurred once in a child’s primary e
Silence follows, and everyone just remains there, seated in the tension. And that’s when Adrian’s lawyer stands. “Your Honour,” he says to the judge. “my client’s words are being interpreted beyond intent. He is not admitting wrongdoing—”The judge raises a hand. “Counsel, sit.”The lawyer stops, clenches his jaw, and seats back down after sending a look towards Laurent. Adrian is still frozen where he is, and Laurent doesn’t push further. He just takes a step back, faces the judge, and says, “Mr Monroe will now respond to the claims made about him.”Nathanial stands up immediately and adjusts his suit coat, his gaze on the judge. “Yes, Your Honour.”Laurent nods once, gesturing to the witness box. Before he can leave, I squeeze his hand gently, and he squeezes mine back. Then, he walks towards the witness box. Once he takes his oath, Laurent begins with his questions. “Mr Monroe,” he calls. “The court would like you to Respond to the allegations of violence and familial miscond
The moment the question leaves Laurent’s mouth, silence follows.I watch as Adrian stiffens, tightening his grip on the witness box. He doesn’t jump in right away to answer too. He actually takes a moment to think, and that alone is enough to make the whole atmosphere more tense. Then, he speaks. “I don’t trust that the stability he currently has in her custody looks good on paper.” His voice is surprisingly calm, like he’s choosing his words. “And that’s because the court deals with present conditions. It doesn’t deal with future breakdowns and what might happen.”The judge nods, her gaze narrowed on him. Laurent, too, doesn’t interrupt him. Adrian takes that as an indication to continue. “I’ve seen what happens when people assume things are fine just because they look fine,” he pauses for effect, now sweeping his gaze across the court before meeting Laurent’s gaze again as the judge takes notes. “And I’ve already experienced violence from Mr Nathanial Hale Monroe.”The judge look
Without a word, Adrian stands up. He turns to look at me, his eyes glinting with a malicious look, then turn away before walking behind the witness box. I can hear my heart racing wildly as he takes his oath, but I force my face to remain neutral. Why did he look at me that way? What does he have up his sleeves?“You okay?” Nathaniel’s low voice comes from beside me, snapping me out of my thoughts, and I look up at him. “You look pale.”I nod before whispering. “Yeah. Just a bit anxious.”“It’s okay,” he says, then leans in to drop a peck beside my head. “We’ll come out of here with victory.”The moment is broken when Adrian’s lawyer clears his throat from where he’s standing, his attention focused on Adrian, and we turn just as he asks him. “Mr Hale,” he begins, his voice calm. “Do you contest Mrs Ellis’ description of events?”“No,” Adrian says, much to my surprise. Before anyone can say anything, he continues. “But I contest her interpretation of them.”The lawyer nods, appeari
“Adrian has been granted bail.”The moment the words reach my ears, I freeze for a second, the kitchen cabinet door staying open in my hand. At first, I don’t turn. I just stand there, staring at the row of mugs like I’ve forgotten what I came here for. Then I do.The movement is too quick that my
The station feels colder than I expect it to be. Not only in temperature, but also in feeling. It’s obvious that in a place like this, you have no one to save you, and the chilling, frightening atmosphere of the building is a proof of that. It’s late in the evening, and just as the lawyer said ea
The elevator is quiet. It’s not that empty kind of quietness, but rather the type that presses in uncomfortably, settles under your skin, and makes you aware of things you would rather ignore. Like how close to me Nathaniel Hale Monroe is standing. He’s not touching me though, but he’s not standi
I can’t take my eyes off Nathaniel. His hands are slipped into his pants pockets, his calm gaze fixed on Adrian, and before any of us can say a word, he begins to walk toward us slowly. The moment he stops right beside me, the warmth from his figure making the air feel suddenly heavy, he meets Adr
