Anna POV

I had never felt fear like this before—not the kind that makes your chest tighten, your fingers tremble, your stomach sink into a pit that feels bottomless. And yet, here I was, standing frozen at the top of the grand staircase in Sam’s family mansion, staring at Claire lying on the cold marble floor, her eyes wide, lips slightly parted in shock—but also… triumph.

The sound of my own heartbeat was deafening. My mind screamed at me, but my body wouldn’t move.

“I… I didn’t—” My voice cracked, faltering. I couldn’t even finish the sentence. How could I? How could I explain that I hadn’t touched her, hadn’t pushed her, hadn’t even thought of harming her?

Claire laughed softly, the sound cruel and sweet at the same time. “Oh, Anna… are you really going to try and deny it? You were so angry. Everyone saw you glaring at me, pacing behind me. You practically shoved me.”

I felt my knees weaken. She was twisting it, bending reality into a shape that painted me as the villain. My stomach churned with disbelief and rising panic.

Before I could protest, the heavy footsteps came. Sam.

I knew the moment he entered the room that the balance I had been clinging to for years had shattered. He looked calm at first, eyes dark and unreadable, but when he saw Claire sprawled on the floor, a little limp, a little shaken—but alive—something inside him snapped.

“Anna,” he said, his voice low, tight, almost dangerous.

I wanted to reach for him, to explain, to plead, but fear rooted me to the spot.

“She fell,” Claire said quickly, her voice soft, practiced, innocent. “It was… an accident. But Anna was right behind me—she didn’t even try to stop me. She… she could have.”

Sam’s eyes narrowed. That cold, ruthless edge I had always feared, the one that came when he let his temper mix with his pride, appeared. He didn’t ask me what happened. He didn’t pause to consider my words, my presence, my protests. He just… decided.

“Is that true?” he asked, his tone sharp enough to cut through steel.

I opened my mouth, but no sound came. How could I convince him when everything inside me screamed that no one would believe me?

“You…” His gaze pinned me to the floor. “You are lucky I wasn’t here when this happened. Or else…” His words trailed off, but the threat was clear. His ruthlessness was terrifying. It wasn’t cruelty, not exactly—but it was judgment without hearing, power without mercy.

“I didn’t—Sam, I swear, I didn’t touch her!” I finally managed, voice trembling, raw with desperation.

“She insists,” he said, voice cutting me down further, “that you pushed her. And everyone else… everyone who saw you moments before… confirms her story. You need to explain yourself, Anna. Now.”

I felt the room spinning. My head pounded. My stomach twisted. Explain myself? Explain myself for something I didn’t do?

Claire pushed herself up, brushing her hair back with casual elegance. “It’s alright, Sam. I’m fine. But Anna…” Her smile was sweet, almost angelic, but I could see the calculation in her eyes. “She was angry. Everyone noticed. I… I think you should be careful.”

Sam’s jaw tightened. The ruthless man I feared, the man I had once loved blindly, didn’t wait for my defense. He believed her. He wanted to believe her.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to throw myself at him, grab his hands, shake him until he saw the truth—but the weight of his presence, the absolute authority in his posture, froze me.

“Anna,” he said again, softer this time, but no less commanding. “If what she says is true… then this marriage—our life—cannot continue like this. Do you understand me?”

I nodded slowly, but it was hollow. My chest felt as though it had been hollowed out entirely.

“You will… stay away from her until we figure this out,” he continued. “I won’t tolerate recklessness. Not from you. Not ever.”

Claire smiled then, standing gracefully, as if the whole room belonged to her. “Thank you, Sam,” she whispered. “I knew you’d understand.”

I wanted to vomit. I wanted to cry. I wanted to vanish into the marble floor beneath me. My own husband, the man I had trusted with my heart, had chosen to believe the manipulations of the woman he once called the one who got away. And me? I was nothing but an obstacle in their story.

The rest of the evening passed in a blur. Sam barely spoke to me, his presence in the same room a reminder of his judgment and my helplessness. Every glance I tried to give him, every plea I wanted to make, was intercepted by Claire’s soft laughter, her poised movements, her ability to be innocent and untouchable all at once.

I finally escaped to my apartment later that night, collapsing onto my bed. The room was dark, but the shadows felt suffocating. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. I wanted to tell someone, anyone, that I hadn’t pushed her, that this was a lie—but even the thought of speaking it aloud made my throat tighten. Sam would not listen. He had already decided.

I pressed my hands over my face, whispering into the darkness. “How do I fight something no one will believe? How do I survive a world where the man I love sees me as guilty without a trial?”

Tears slid down my cheeks, hot and silent. I had endured neglect, absence, and pressure for years, but this… this felt different. This was active danger, a trap I hadn’t seen coming.

Somewhere, in the back of my mind, a small, stubborn voice whispered: You will survive. You always do. But this… this will change everything.

And I knew it was right. It wasn’t just a fall down the stairs that had happened tonight. It was the beginning of my life unraveling—of Sam’s ruthlessness, of Claire’s manipulations, of my own fight to prove who I was before everything I loved was taken from me.

Because after tonight, nothing would ever be the same.

He had stopped, frozen in disbelief, as he looked toward the distant hill. The sniper—someone who looked exactly like my father—was still standing there, calm, deadly, and watching us.My throat went dry. The twins kicked violently. Anna’s POVThe tension in the Carter boardroom had barely begun to dissipate when the next wave of threats hit. My phone buzzed again—another anonymous message. My hand trembled slightly as I opened it:“Your victory is temporary. The empire will not be yours unless you face me… in person. —H.C.”I felt a chill. H.C.—Harold Carter, my uncle—was not finished. He may have been detained last night, but he still had the means to strike. And I realized: this time, it wouldn’t be through proxies or legal maneuvering. He would come for us himself.Sam saw my expression and placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “Whatever he plans, we’ll face it. Together. You, me, your father, Victor—and the twins.”I nodded, my stomach tightening—not just from fear but from the twins’ movements. The Carter board’s message last night had been clear: this was far from over.“Anna,” my father said softly, taking my hand, “the board will act today. Anna’s POVThe shrill sirens tore through the night air, echoing off the water and metal docks. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it might shatter my ribcage. My hands instinctively moved to my stomach, protecting the twins as if my own life no longer mattered.Sam’s hand found mine, gripping it tightly, steadying me. For the first time all night, his face showed clarity. The tension, the hesitation—it was gone. His eyes were sharp, cold, determined. And for the first time, I realized: he had never truly been the enemy.“They’re here,” Victor said softly, his voice low but commanding. “The police. The backup I requested weeks ago. They’ve been tracking your uncle’s financial crimes, and now… they have reason to intervene in person.”I blinked rapidly, trying to process everything.
