•Vera POV•

“Brooke, is there something else I didn’t check at the office?” I asked as I walked into the living room.

The smug smile on her lips vanished as she stood up. “No, Miss Vera…I need your—”

“Brooke, you don’t have any explanation to give to her,” Mrs. Lawson cut in as she stood up, shooting Brooke an angry stare.

My heart thudded in my chest as I tried to understand what was happening.

“Mother, what’s the meaning of this?” Eric asked, stepping forward as if to shield me from his mother’s words.

He looked in Brooke’s direction, his jaw clenched and his hands balled into fists. His mother rolled her eyes. “Eric, I’m doing what’s best for you.”

“What’s best for him?” I murmured, still confused. I looked at Brooke. The look on her face showed more of pretend guilt, and I was finding it hard to understand what was really going on.

Could Brooke be the lady that had been waiting for Eric for years?

The question rang in my head like a warning bell, and the ache in my heart deepened.

•Vera POV•“Are you sure you don’t want to go back to the house, honey?” my mom asked as we sat on the cold iron bench in the park. The park was quiet, too quiet, but my head was loud. Eric’s words kept replaying in my mind again and again, like someone had pressed replay and forgotten to stop it.“No, Mom,” I shook my head slowly. I wanted to say more, wanted to explain how I felt, but the words got stuck in my throat. My chest felt tight, like I couldn’t breathe properly. I had thought once I married Eric, everything would finally fall into place. I thought we would be happy. I thought love would be enough. But Brooke…Brooke having a child for him…That was worse than anything I ever imagined.“I don’t want to ever go back to that house,” I whispered, staring at the ground as tears rolled down my face. “I don’t want to see Eric or hear any explanation he has to offer.”My mom sighed softly and moved closer, rubbing my back gently. “I understand how you’re feeling, honey. I really d

•Eric POV•“What about her mother? She must know where she went,” Juliet said, her voice breaking as it caught my attention. I turned to her slowly.“Her mother is with her,” I replied, my breath coming out rough as I held my chest like my heart would jump out any second. “Thelma said she ran after her when she left the house.”“What about you call her mother?” Edward said as he walked toward me.“They left their phones in the house,” I said, my voice shaking as the pain kept tightening around my chest.Juliet began pacing around the living room like she was about to lose her mind. Her steps were fast, restless. “Where could she be?” she asked, then turned sharply to me. “What’s all this, Eric? Why are you hurting Vera like this?”I couldn’t look at her. I dropped my gaze to the floor because I knew she was right. Everything Vera was feeling right now… it was because of me. Because of my life. Because of the mess that followed me everywhere I went.“I’m sorry,” I muttered. “I don’t ev

•Eric POV•I shoved my hand through my hair as frustration clawed at me. My chest felt tight, like something heavy was sitting on it. I couldn’t believe what my mother was saying. This had to be another one of her plans to ruin my happiness. She had always found a way to do that.“Don’t you dare cut the call on me, Eric,” she snapped when she noticed I had gone quiet.“Why won’t I cut the call?” I fired back, my voice shaking with anger as my hand balled into a fist. “I thought when you called, you wanted to apologize for what you did. But this? Why do you like causing me pain, Mom? Do you enjoy it?”“What are you saying, Eric?” she replied sharply. “All I ever wanted was your happiness. And I know Vera can’t give you that. Part of the reason I never agreed to that marriage was because I knew Brooke already has a child for you.”“No, Mom!” I shouted. “She is not, that child is not mine, Brooke was never pregnant for me. I refuse to accept that.”“I won’t take that from you,” she yelle

•Vera POV•After the wedding celebration was over, I escorted Juliet to the car. Edward was already seated inside with Jace, waiting for her.“Thank you so much, Jules, for making today special for me,” I said, stopping when we were close to the car.Juliet chuckled softly. “I’m so happy you’re finally married to Eric and that the wedding went well.” She turned to face me. “At some point, when Mrs. Lawson was giving you trouble, I started getting scared, but I’m glad nothing bad happened.”I nodded with a smile. “Yeah.” But the smile slowly faded when I remembered what I had seen earlier. “Jules… I saw Brooke today at the hall.”Juliet’s eyes widened. “What? Did she say anything or do anything?”I shook my head. “No, but she had dark shades on and was trying to hide. I could tell it was her.”Juliet went quiet for a moment, then sighed. “That’s strange, but don’t let it bother you. She can’t do anything now. You’re married to Eric, and everything is going to be fine.”I smiled, forcin

•Vera POV•The rest of the week passed faster than I expected, and before I knew it, another week had arrived. Eric and I had managed to get most of the wedding preparations ready, even though some things still felt rushed. He tried calling his mother several times, but her phone kept going straight to voicemail. It was clear she didn’t want to talk to him. Each time the call failed, I could see the hurt in his eyes, and it made my heart ache. I would reach for his hand, squeezing it gently, trying to let him know that he wasn’t alone. Most times, that little gesture made him smile, even if it was a weak one.Now here I was, standing in front of the full-length mirror, staring at my reflection. The wedding dress hugged my body just right, fitting perfectly without making me uncomfortable. The fabric flowed softly down my body, loose around my stomach, giving me room to breathe while still showing my shape beautifully. The lace around the chest area shimmered softly under the light, an

•Vera POV•I stood at the door for a while before pushing it open. My hand hovered on the handle, my heart beating faster than it should. When I finally stepped inside, Eric was lying on the bed, one hand resting on his chest, his eyes closed. For a moment, I just stood there watching him.I entered the room quietly, closing the door softly behind me, and walked toward the bed. I sat beside him, my movements slow, like I was scared to wake him up.Looking at him like this made my chest tighten. My mom was right. Maybe I had been paying so much attention to Mrs. Lawson and her drama that I forgot the most important thing, how much Eric loved me.I remembered how he used to stare at me back then, before everything. I would catch him watching me, and he’d quickly look away like he wasn’t guilty. Until one day, he finally admitted he had feelings for me and wanted us to date. When I told him I liked him too, the smile on his face that day was something I would never forget. He lifted me o
