•Juliet's POV•

The sharp, repetitive ringing of my phone jolted me awake. The sound prickled against my pulse. For a moment, I thought, hoped, I would open my eyes and see Jace’s little face peering over the bed, his giggles filling the room.

But reality was cruel. The bed was empty. The room was silent. And the previous day event came crashing back in my thought.

My heart skipped as I reached out and grabbed the phone, pressing it to my ear. “Hello?”

“Miss Ryder, it’s Mrs. Francis,” came the voice on the other end. “I found her. I found Mrs. Bianca. You need to come quickly. I'm at Newcastle Hospital.”

My heart thudded in my chest as I jumped out of bed. “I’m coming,” I said and hung up before she could say more.

Still in my pajamas, I rushed out of the room and down the stairs. I was about to head to Eric’s room when I spotted him asleep on the living room couch, his head tilted to the side.

He must’ve stayed there all night. I hated to wake him, but there was no time.

“Eric!” I cal

•Juliet's POV•“Thank you,” I muttered as I sipped the last of the warm soup. Mrs Carl smiled and collected the empty bowl, she placed it on the tray. Then handed me a glass of water. I took it and drained it in one go before giving it back. She balanced the tray carefully, and exited the room. Just as the door clicked shut behind her, Vera walked in. She was dressed casually, black pants and a white singlet, and her hair was pulled up in a neat ponytail. “How are you feeling now?” she asked, moving closer and settling into the chair beside my bed.“I’m fine,” I murmured. “I’m not feeling pains that much anymore.”She gave me a small smile. “I’m glad to hear that.” Her gaze shifted to my phone resting on the nightstand. “Any call from James?”“No… nothing. I hadn’t even touched the phone since morning." As if summoned by her words, the device buzzed to life. Vera jerked her head toward it and quickly reached out to check the screen.“It’s James,” she whispered, her eyes narrowing sli

•Edward’s POV•The soft music being sung by a woman on a small platform in the bar filled the space as I sat on a stool next to the marble-tiled counter, staring at the transparent liquid in my glass. I raised it slowly and took a mouthful, welcoming the burn as it slid down my throat. The sensation grounded me, momentarily distracting me from the one thing that refused to leave my mind, Juliet. Her face flashed behind my closed lids, the distressed look in her eyes, the weight of exhaustion on her features. She had been so strong for so long, carrying burdens no woman should ever bear alone. All she ever wanted was love. Genuine love. And the moment she thought she’d found it, he turned out to be a monster.I refilled my glass with the clear liquor, my hands steady but my heart was filled with regret and pain. How could I have been so stupid? So blind? How could I have ever compared Raya to Juliet? How could I have cheated on Juliet?Maybe James was right. Maybe if I hadn’t been so

•Juliet’s POV•A low murmur pulled me out of the dark haze.I blinked, my lashes fluttering as the blurred outline of my bedroom ceiling came into view. The faint scent of disinfectant mingled with the soft rustling of movement nearby. It took a moment before the voices around me became clearer.“She’s been under a lot of mental stress,” a woman was saying gently. “Her blood pressure is high, borderline hypertensive. If it rises any higher, it could lead to something dangerous. We’re talking about the risk of a stroke or even heart failure if she doesn’t take it easy.”“Has she been stressing herself out lately?”“I think it’s just work,” Vera’s voice responded softly, though there was an edge of worry underneath her words. “She’s been pushing herself more than usual.”“Well,” the woman replied, “she needs rest, immediately. I recommend she take at least a day off from work, maybe more. Her body is clearly overwhelmed. If this continues, it could lead to serious complications.”“I und

•Juliet POV•I pulled away from Vera’s hold, my hands trembling as I picked up the phone and dialed Mr. Braden’s number. While it rang, I turned to Vera, my eyes slightly blurred with tears.“Please, help me get Eric,” I stammered, the fear James had impaled in me creeping up my sleeves like a cold wind.Vera nodded quickly and rushed out of the room to get Eric. I brought the phone close to my ear just as the call connected.“Mr. Braden, is there a way we can cancel the lawsuit and everything that might make James come to court?”“Miss Ryder,” Mr. Braden’s voice sounded shocked. “What are you saying? Is there a problem?”I shook my head, biting back the sob that threatened to break loose. “No, Mr. Braden. I just figured out that James is innocent, and that I’ve been wrong all this while.”“Are you sure, Miss Ryder? Did Mr. Grigs threaten you? You can tell me, Miss Ryder, and I’ll get the cops to pick him up,” Mr. Braden said, his voice laced with urgency.“No, Mr. Braden,” I replied,

•Juliet POV•The blaring sound of my phone vibrated harshly against the oxblood blanket, slicing through the thick silence of the room. My hand trembled slightly as I reached for it, the screen glowing with an incoming call from Mr. Braden.I pressed the answer button and held it to my ear. “Hello, Mr. Braden,” I greeted, my voice barely above a whisper despite my effort to sound composed.“Miss Ryder,” his crisp voice replied. “I’ve been reviewing the court proceedings and wanted to inform you that the date has finally been set. The first hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning.”My heart pounded dully in my chest. I had nearly forgotten about the lawsuit amid the chaos of Jace’s disappearance. Worry and exhaustion clouded my mind.“I’ve passed the information on to Mr. Grigs,” he continued, “though he’s showing signs of reluctance. He seems to think this is one of those cases he can simply buy his way out of.”I nodded slowly, though he couldn’t see me. “Thank you, Mr. Braden. I…

•Juliet POV•"You need to relax, Jules," Vera said gently, settling beside me on the edge of my bed. “I know I shouldn’t be saying this right now, but you need to be strong, for Jace.”“How can I be strong, Vera?” I choked, tears streaming down my cheeks as I wiped them with the back of my palm. “Jace was all I had, and now I’m supposed to sit here and pretend everything will be alright? Mrs. Bianca is dead, Vera. This is serious. My mind keeps circling back to the court case I filed against James, I can't help but feel like all of this is connected.”Vera’s lips parted, but she paused, falling into silence for a moment, clearly weighing her thoughts before she spoke. “Who else could be responsible, if not him? Eric suspected him from the start. He told me last night that he already informed the cops. But if James really is behind all this, wouldn’t he have contacted you by now? Threatened you to drop the case or something?”“I don’t know what to think anymore,” I whispered, pressing
