Adrian did not raise his hands. He did not need to. The two men who closed around him had done it before, and the pat-down was brisk and impersonal. They found his phone and crushed it under a heel. They found nothing else, because there was nothing else.

“Hello, Father,” Adrian said.

Richard lowered the flashlight. Rain beaded on the silver of his hair, and in the dark his face looked carved. He leaned on a cane Adrian had never seen him use.

“I had hoped you would be sensible,” Richard said.

  • Divorced For The Heiress... But I Was The Real Billionaire    Opposite Sides

Adrian did not raise his hands. He did not need to. The two men who closed around him had done it before, and the pat-down was brisk and impersonal. They found his phone and crushed it under a heel. They found nothing else, because there was nothing else.“Hello, Father,” Adrian said.Richard lowered the flashlight. Rain beaded on the silver of his hair, and in the dark his face looked carved. He leaned on a cane Adrian had never seen him use.“I had hoped you would be sensible,” Richard said. “I see I have never once been that fortunate.”“Where is he?”“Safe. Warm. Fed.” Richard turned and began to walk. “Come. You will want to see for yourself, and I would like to say a few things before this is over.”They marched him across the yard and through the open doors into the main hall of the east building. A single work light hung from a chain, swaying slightly, throwing long shadows over rows of dead machinery. The air smelled of rust and old oil. Adrian knew every inch of this room. H

Ethan sat very still on the cold concrete, because Mom said that when something scary happens, the first job is to be a good noticer. So he noticed. There were three windows high up on the wall. Two of them had no glass at all, only black holes where the wind whistled in. The third was covered with a plastic bag that breathed in and out like it was asleep. By the door was a gray box with buttons, but the button for seven was gone, and a red wire hung out of it like a tail.On the other side of the room stood a wide metal door that slid on a track. A chain went through its handle, and the chain hung low and loose. One link on it was bent open, like a mouth saying ah.Ethan looked at the red wire. He looked at the bent link. He looked at the windows again. Then he did what Mom said to do next. He named five things in his head. Concrete. Wire. Window. Chain. Blanket. The blanket was new. A man with a scar through his eyebrow had thrown it at him an hour ago, a gray moving blanket that sm

  • Divorced For The Heiress... But I Was The Real Billionaire    How did you find me?

The ticket to Lisbon was one way, and Chloe Hart had paid for it with the last clean money she owned. She sat in a rented sedan on level four of the airport parking structure with the engine off and her passport in her lap, watching her banking app crawl toward completion. Four point one million. Transferring. Please hold. She had given Adrian the flash drive. She had meant it, every file of it. But a woman has to eat, she had told herself, and one account had stayed in her pocket, a forgotten coin in a coat after the laundry. Tonight she would disappear with it. Tomorrow she would be someone else, somewhere warm, where no one had ever heard of the Kingsleys. Her phone lit up. Julian. The eleventh call. She let it ring out. Then she saw the headlights sweep the ramp, slow, and settle behind her car like a hand on her shoulder.Julian stepped out into the gloom, hands in his coat pockets, perfectly at ease. He tapped twice on her window.Chloe pressed record on the phone in her lap, sl

“Say that again,” Adrian shouted into the phone, wipers slapping back and forth as rain began to fall on Alder Hollow Road.“The provider accepted the company’s authority,” Daniel said, the signal crackling. “Unit fourteen is Kingsley property, and you’re acting chairman. They reactivated the tracker twenty minutes ago. It only pings while the engine runs, every ninety seconds, but sir, it is running.”“Where?”“Not where you are. Hold on.”Adrian killed the headlights and rolled the last hundred yards in the dark. The lodge squatted among the pines like something abandoned by its own family. He put his shoulder to the door, and it gave on the second try.Cold air. Dust. A deer head stared down from the wall with glass eyes. In the beam of his phone he found one clean rectangle on the floorboards where something had stood, a cot perhaps, and a crushed cigarette pack beside it. Nothing else. No boy. No voice. No fear in the walls.“It’s empty,” he said. “Daniel, it’s empty.”“I know. L

Arthur Sinclair had rehearsed this night for twenty-seven years, and none of the rehearsals had helped.“Say it again,” he told Dana Whitlock. “The camera gap.”“One hundred and eleven seconds.” The federal agent did not look up from her laptop. The resort’s dining hall had become a command post in under an hour, its long tables buried in maps, radios and cold coffee. “The outage was pushed through the building management system. Whoever did it knew the generator restart sequence to the second.”“Someone inside.”“Someone who bought a map of the inside.”Across the room Eleanor sat on a bench with Ethan’s blue jacket in her lap, smoothing the sleeve over and over. Evelyn had not sat since the lights came on. She walked the length of the hall, turned, walked it again, and her silence frightened him more than a scream would have. Then his private phone rang. Not the one every board member had. The other one. Eleven living people knew that number.Whitlock’s head came up. “Speaker. I’m r

Evelyn counted the exits twice before she let Ethan climb out of the car.“Mom, you’re making the squinty face,” he said from the back seat, a toy telescope clamped under one arm.“This is my regular face.”“It’s your detective face. Grandpa says detectives don’t get to have fun.”“Grandpa is wrong about a great many things.” She unbuckled him and straightened his blue jacket, the one with the zipper he insisted on pulling up to his chin. “Stay where I can see you. Always. Promise?”“Promise.” He lifted the telescope and swept it across the water. “I can see the whole other side! There’s a boat, and a duck, and a man in a hat.”Evelyn followed the lens without meaning to. Across the lake, a fisherman in a canvas hat raised one hand. Only a fisherman. She made herself breathe.Rowan Lake had been Eleanor’s idea, a sprawl of timber cabins and lantern-hung lawns where three hundred Sinclair employees and their children chased each other between picnic tables. Laughter carried over the wa
