LOGINLaura read the email three times before the words stopped looking like a hallucination.
Panic rose as she kept pacing around, hoping everything would make sense again.
From the email the bank sent her, she noticed the buyer to be GreenCore Automobile Ltd. That was Thomas company. Finally she paused, "the damage has been done already. What to do now?"
She sat down and drew in a deep breath. The very first step would be understanding just how threatening this was to her future. She hurried to check the downloaded contract from her email and took a screenshot of every page, then shared to her icloud for backup.
Scrolling through her contacts, she swallowed hard, then dialed a number. It was her lawyer, Jonathan. They'd been together for a long while, one of the few people close enough to her to call family. But now, she felt nothing but betrayal from him.
"Laura... thank God you called!"
She asked, her voice was soft, filled will fear. "Tell me you didn't authorize that transfer."
"Oh, I'm sorry, Laura. You insisted on it!" Jonathan cried out immediately. "What's going on?"
"My money," Laura froze, not knowing how to say it. "I--I've never insisted on ruining myself before, Jonathan. I..."
Jonathan exhaled sharply. "Two nights ago. You were slurring. I thought you'd been drinking. You said you were done fighting him. That you wanted everything in his name."
Drinking? She hadn't touched alcohol in months. Not since she suspected pregnancy.
Her temple throbbed suddenly, it was a dull ache, "what are you saying?"
"Your signature was right there so one would believe me even if I went to the cops. Especially when you sent me that threatening text last night. I'll share with you now."
She presses her fingers against her forehead. Why can't she remember two nights ago?
Jonathan continued, "you threatened my license if I didn't file immediately."
He'd forwarded the text to her. As Laura read through, she realized it had been truly vicious. Well calculated and cruel.
It sounded just like her.
That became scarier than obvious forgery.
"Nothing would have been in my favor. I know you as a smart woman and maybe you thought you were making a bold move. But there's already a confirmed verification passed biometric authentication sent from the bank."
He went on, "I tried to see you yesterday but Thomas said you were resting. That you weren't taking visitors."
Her breath stilled.
Resting?
She sure remembered sleeping a lot, and waking up feeling groggy. Her head began to ache.
She quickly checked her call log and found multiple outgoing calls she never remembered making.
Missed calls from Jonathan...
Tea tasting slightly bitter...
She marched straight to the kitchen immediately.
There she found the ginger tea cup from the night before still in the sink. Lifting it up, she her nose crunched in disgust at a faint bitter smell beneath the ginger. Her face was a mask of confusion now.
Jonathan still on the phone kept calling, "Hello? Hello?"
Finally, she felt her mind hardening. "Jonathan, there's still time. Let's meet at the diner. ASAP!"
In under 15 minutes, she arrived at a small diner where she and Jonathan sometimes hung out to talk business. Jonathan was already waiting for her. Laura marched down towards where he sat.
Jonathan brushed through his bald hair, smiling proudly as he sighted her. "Welcome."
"Exactly what mess am I in right now?" She sat down, placing her purse beside her.
"Well firstly, the estate transfer is closing in 72 hours. And the transfer was initiated to GreenCore Automobile Ltd. Director is a woman named Rita Smith, daughter to the actress Regina Smith."
"Yea, he's claiming the estate but in his company's name. But why is he using this Rita girl as director?"
Suddenly, it hit her. Rita was from Thomas's marketing consultant team. "She called some nights ago. It was just our anniversary, and Thomas had stayed late on the phone with her laughing and blushing like an idiot. He said they had some late-night strategy meetings and it was nothing for me to worry about."
Someone came towards their table. "Can we take your order, miss?"
"Just give the usuals," Jonathan said with a smile.
"Here, use my card to pay." Laura handed Jonathan her card, her attention was still fixated on her phone.
"The card is declined, ma'am." The lady said after swiping the card.
Laura frowned, "what? Try again."
She tried again but gave the same report. "It's still declining."
"Its just a bank error. No need to pay now anyway, we can always pay before we leave." Jonathan said, dismissing the lady politely.
"My card was declined?"
"Check your account balance." Jonathan suggested.
"That's insane. I would know if--"
"just to confirm something," he insisted.
Laura opened her bank app, put in her details and waited for it to open.
Account restricted.
"Huh? My own account is...restricted?"
"That's what I wanted to confirm. Somehow, he's managed to freeze your account." Jonathan said.
Suddenly ringing in her head, Laura began to realize the threat Thomas had made earlier, and it made more sense to her now.
"You think you're so strong? You don't even have access to your own accounts."
"I moved everything into my company's holding account last night. You know, for protection."
"We need to take legal steps now, Laura."
Laura went quiet.
Jonathan watched her carefully. He couldn't even begin to imagine what she must had been going through right now.
Finally, Laura shook her head. "No. Not yet, at least." She said. "I still want him comfortable." Her eyes became sharp now conviniently plotting her way out.
Laura looked at the app, frowing. "He didn't freeze it," she said calmly. "He must have replaced my recovery access."
She searched through her contact list and dialed the bank. "Hi. This is Laura Grayson. I need an immediate in-branch verification for compromised credentials. Today."
"Yes. I'll bring identification."
Just as she hung up, she received a call from Thomas. "Laura, baby. We need to talk, I'm sorry about everything."
"Why is your mistress buying my family estate?" Laura launched out.
"What?" Thomas said, laughing. "Laura, don't you think you're being unfair right now? We have one little fight and you're already making assumptions?"
"So Rita isn't someone important in your life? You think you can get away with this?"
"Listen, Laura, let's settle this over dinner tonight. I'm throwing a little party, for our anniversary. I didn't forget."
Anniversary that was more than two weeks ago.
"What do you say to that? I want to celebrate you, my love."
She said nothing and hung up. "Jonathan? I need the details of Rita Smith. Every piece of info I can get. Oh and, Thomas is throwing me a party tonight. You're invited."
"A party? Laura...what are you...?"
A smile spread on her face. "I'm ending this tonight."
This made Laura scoff. They still liked to believe she ruined Thomas? When he was the wine who took everything away from her."Hello my fans, this is very crazy but remember that woman? Well she is standing right here. I'm going to do a quick recording and show her to you, okay?""This is stupid," Laura found herself admitting out loud. "So this is your new life? This fake social media influencer nonsense wasn't just a phase that would pass?""Okay here we go. Take a look at the camera and say hello to everyone." Rachel turned the camera away from her face and to Laura. "Say hi. And...oh, you're waving? Idiot.""Of course I'm waving. Do I look good?" She was adjusting her dress, smoothing it as if the camera faced to her were some paparazzis."What kind of lunatic are you?" Monica's face soured as she asked. She didn't understand why Laura would be so confident all of a sudden. "You use to beg me for attention. You'd beg me not to let Thomas divorce you.""And now I'm changed. Right?
The shoe was simple enough, silver with something like glitters on it. As dull as it might have looked, it was very attractive. Instantly, Laura could tell it was expensive. She heard footsteps behind and then a woman said. "Look at you wish believing that show can be yours. Ha!"Laura frowned and turned. That voice was so damn familiar. Standing before her was a slender lady with brown hair tied in a ponytail. She was standing beside her look alike, Monica, only a more older version. "I'd recognize that voice anywhere," she said with a smile on her face. "Rachel. And her dumb mother, Monica." Something in her was driving her to talk carelessly. Rachel and Monica (Thomas' sister and mother) always drove her crazy then, while she was still married to him. They hated her and did not even show it at all.She was always so afraid of them because she feared they would ruin her marriage. Now, there was no need to be afraid again. "Wow mom, I can't believe this." Rachel said."I didn't eve
Rita had made everything perfect, or as perfect as she could. "Conor, I need to get dressed." She said to him. Thomas and her had a heated argument and he had made some threats about leaving her. She promised and instantly agreed not to go with him to the Sanchez event, regardless of how Laura might be thinking less of her. "I need you to hint me when Thomas is back. I'll be upstairs."He nodded, but it was sad. She knew what Thomas was planning, and yet she was still pretending to be the perfect wife. Rita rushed upstairs. She had cooked his favorite meals, or hired people who could cook, since she was a terrible cook. Her shower was a quick one. It was an effort to get dressed so fast because her routine was always a lit, from her skin care routine to her outfit and even though it was in the night, Rita managed to stay in front of the mirror to make herself up. She was beautiful just the way Thomas liked it. And also half nude in those skimpy shirt-dress. Her hair was wrapped in h
Fashion world? What happened to her real estate company? How did they managed empires when they just kept switching from one business to another? And why did Tamara lie to her? What was she hiding!Laura, already getting frustrated, was unknowingly sighing repeatedly in the car. Lia was fast asleep next to Leroy. He glanced at her. "I'm sorry about tonight," was all he could mutter. He didn't understand how everything had gone upside down. "I should have protected you," he said. Lia was kidnapped! Where had he gone wrong? "I'm really glad you're thinking about spending the weekend away from home. It's going to be safe for Lia and—"Laura shut her eyes tight, maybe it would hide the regret in them? "You're just going to examine her because of today's trauma. And from there, Lia and I are going to a hotel."Leroy blinked. "Oh, I thought you were going to stay a while."She was going through a lot, he knew that. But why couldn't she just see that he was only trying to help? "Okay, tha
Laura slammed the door open, storming inside. "Tamara!" She called out.Tamara ran out, already knowing her daughter would be so angry. "Where's Lia?""What the hell? Who took her, right under your care!" Laura demanded."They just took her!—""I'm sorry. I was with her all through. I just..."Of course she couldn't talk. Laura heaved in a heavy sigh. "You left her all alone," she said. "She told me you left her, Tamara.""I just wanted to...get something real quick.""It was just her alone at home when they came! I left you in charge, you told me to let Ruta and Tania go for a week's break. That you'll be fine alone with her." Tears filled her eyes."What if something worse had happened..." Her voice trailed off. "Where is she? Where is my precious Lia?" Tamara asked again but Laura ignored for the second time."We're leaving. I came to take a few things. I want you gone before we come back." She turned to walk away but Tamara rushed to hold her. "Where are you going, huh? Where's Li
He snatched the phone from him. "How dare you read my messages? Since when did you..." He turned to see Laura watching him suspiciously. He hoped Lia hadn't seen him slap someone just like that. Then heaved in felt breath to try and calm himself. "Go away," he said to the young man. Laura noticed how tense he was. He received a message, how could he be so afraid of her finding out about a message? And what estate...? The only person that could give him their family estate was...it couldn't be. Why would Tamara give up the estate when she'd been fighting Thomas with her...maybe it wasn't her family's estate and something else."Well, sorry it has to come to this." He handed her a paper Laura hadn't even realized he was holding. "Sign the paper, the Grayson and Sanchez have concluded we want to buy Greenwood Estate for the foundation of our project. You'll be the higher shareholder, you'll be among the big dons in town. You need us.""You would go through this length, kidnapping my ba
He felt like he might had overreacted. Justin told him always to control his emotions. At least he was glad Lia was doing okay. "Why do you care a lot about that little girl though? She's only just a patient," Justin had asked him one day. "And you always say nevwe to personally care too much abou
Leroy paused, got up then knelt beside Lia. Everyone were trying to be calm without over reacting. She didn't look like she was joking, 5 years old or not, Lia was a smart kid. "I'm... someone who cares about you."Lia smiled, then gave a big nod. "I'm glad. Mommy, see there's someone who cares ab
Thomas walked in, glancing around the room. He had thought Leroy was just some poor doctor. He never expected him to live in such a big house. Or that he would have so much security with that stupid alarm announcing his presence. Could any one even sneak up on him? I need that technology, he thoug
Laura had been patient. She tried so hard not to get upset with Leroy, but he was too good at making her angry. He would not utter more than two words, gave her attitude and not explain what she'd done to make him mad."They said her result for the full diagnosis will be ready soon." She was sayin
