Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
That night, Gary and Kelly came back home and switched on the light in the living room. They almost jumped when they saw someone sitting on the couch.

Kelly recovered first. "What's wrong with you, Dana?! Sitting here at night like some ghost, trying to scare us like that?!"

Dana looked at her and said, "I thought you were too afraid to go outside and socialize?"

There was a flicker in Kelly's eyes. "Where I go is none of your business!"

She then stormed upstairs without looking back.

Gary walked over, stiff and unnatural. "I took Kelly to see a therapist."

"You should. She went up to the roof again today, and she said she wants Sandy to be her sister-in-law," Dana said.

Gary frowned, impatient. "She's not well after what she went through. Just put up with it a little longer."

"Put up with it?" Dana got up to her feet. "How much more am I supposed to put up with? She orders me around, forces me to slap myself, makes me kneel and apologize to her, I..."

Gary's expression darkened as he cut her off with a sharp voice. "Enough! Who do you think made her like this?!"

Dana's nails dug into her palm.

-

Two years ago, they had just parked outside a restaurant when Kelly had messaged Gary and told him to pick her up from school.

Dana's fingers had been interlocked with his, and she leaned in and kissed his neck, her voice soft as she pleaded, "It's my birthday today. Can you stay with me... Until we are done?"

Gary hesitated, then nodded. "Alright."

Before they could even get out of the car, Kelly called again.

"I'll explain it to her," Gary said, reaching for his phone.

Dana suddenly snatched it and shut it off, furious. "She always has some reason to drag you away. She's already an adult. You don't need to watch her every second. She will always be more important than me in your heart, right?"

Gary looked at her and finally sighed. "Our parents died early. It's just the two of us now. Maybe… I'm too anxious when it comes to her."

They were halfway through dinner when the driver rushed in. "Sir! Ms. Hill has been kidnapped!"

Gary did not find Kelly until the next day in an abandoned warehouse.

She had been tortured all night by their family's enemy, covered in bruises and cuts, with her eyes unfocused.

-

"Yes, it's my fault she turned out like this..." Dana's voice was hoarse. "But for the past two years, I have worked myself to the bone taking care of her. She has already crushed my pride. Am I supposed to be tortured by her for the rest of my life?"

Gary fell quiet suddenly and wouldn't look at her. Then, his voice became unnaturally stiff as he said, "The therapist said Kelly needs some emotional support right now, so Sandy will be moving in tomorrow."

"What?" Dana stared at him in disbelief.

"When Kelly feels better, I'll have her move out," Gary said quickly.

Dana looked at him. "Gary, I went to the registry office today."

Gary froze, and his fingers tightened without thinking.

"They told me we are already divorced," Dana said with a smile, but tears rolled from the corners of her eyes. "You already had it planned. You were just waiting for me to make room for Sandy."

Gary rushed forward and grabbed her wrist, his tone nervous, "It's not what you think! Kelly threatened to kill herself. I had no choice. Don't worry, Dana. When she's more stable, we'll remarry. I will never let you suffer again, alright?"

"Threatened to kill herself?" Dana yanked her arm free, her voice rising. "How many times has she used that on us? She used that every time, and you always believed her!"

Gary snapped too, veins popping out at his temple. "She's my sister! The only family I have in this world! I can't gamble with her life! I cannot afford to!

"Dana, why are you always pushing me?! Don't you know how hard it is for me to get stuck between the two of you?! Can't you just be understanding for once?"

Dana looked into Gary's eyes and almost laughed. Had she not been understanding enough?

The first time she had met Kelly, Kelly had shoved her into the pool right in front of Gary. He had said, "Kelly is just a spoiled kid. Go easy on her."

On their wedding day, not only had Kelly not shown up, but she had even locked all the villa's doors. Dana had stood outside in her wedding dress, freezing for half an hour. In the end, they had to spend their wedding night in a hotel.

Gary had said then, "I'm sorry you were done dirty like this. Give it time. Kelly will accept you."

After Kelly was kidnapped, she took it out on Dana every day. If she could not see Dana, she would throw a fit.

Gary begged Dana with red eyes, "Help me. It won't be for long..."

Every time, Dana endured it.

But now, she did not want to anymore. "I'm tired, Gary."

Gary immediately pulled her into his arms. "Dana, I love you."

He tightened his hold, his voice almost pleading. "Do it for me. Just for a little longer, alright?"

Dana went stiff in his embrace, as if she had agreed.

They were already divorced anyway.

It did not matter.

After the wedding, Dana and Alec did not rush off to crowded vacation spots for their honeymoon. Instead, they drove slowly along the mountain roads around the small town.Alec knew Dana liked quiet places, so he had picked a few small inns with streams and groves.During the day, he sat with her by the creek to fish and watch the mist roll over the hills. They spent the night in the inn's small living room, with one reading and the other occupied with design drafts. Now and then, they would look up at the same time and see a gentle smile in each other's eyes. When the honeymoon ended,Dana returned to work at the jewelry design branch of the Thompson Group. Every morning, Alec would leave home ten minutes early so he could swing by her office and drop her off, and every evening, he would be there on time to pick her up.When Dana had to work late, Alec would wait in the cafe next door. He would order her favorite latte and stay until she finished. Her coworkers often teased her,

Gary kept watch outside Dana's house the entire night.Early next morning, Dana and Alec came out and saw Gary curled up by the gate. His face was an unhealthy red, his lips cracked, and his eyes were already a little unfocused."Dana..." Hearing the noise, Gary struggled to his feet. As soon as he tried to speak, his throat burned with pain, and his hoarse voice was barely audible.Dana acted as if she had not seen him at all, walking around him and leaving with Alec, side by side.Gary did not give up. He dragged his heavy steps after them, not too close and not too far, but never falling away.Over the next few days, Gary became a shadow in Dana's life. When she went to the design company, he stood downstairs from morning until night. When she went home after work, he went back to the estate's gate and waited outside. In only a few days, his eyes had become red with stubble covering his chin. His once neat suit was wrinkled beyond saving. He looked like a completely different

"Gary, back off!" Alec stepped in front of Dana, his expression stern. "Dana is my fiancée now.""Fiancée?!" Gary turned his head toward Alec, and his rage blinded him. He swung his fist and punched Alec hard in the face. "I'm talking to my wife! Who do you think you are to interfere when you're just an outsider?! Get out of my way!"Alec staggered, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. He wiped it away, his gaze becoming cold. "Gary, listen up! I'm the man Dana chose right now. I'm the one marrying her. You're the outsider here."Dana hurried forward and held Alec's arm. "Alec, are you alright?"Watching Dana worry about Alec, Gary felt as if a knife had been stabbed straight through his heart.Dana turned to Gary and slowly said, "You were the one who tricked me into signing the divorce papers! You were the one who shoved my head into the ice bucket and forced me to admit to some wrongdoing I never committed, even when I was dying! You were the one who turned around and

After getting off the plane, Gary followed the address to Dana's home, but the gate into the estate was shut tight. When Dana had wanted to marry him, her grandfather had never given his blessing. Dana had been afraid he would feel awkward, so she had never brought him home. This was the first time he had ever stood in her homeland. He waited from noon until evening.Just as he was about to lose his patience, a familiar figure appeared at the end of the street. Dana wore a neat business suit with her hair pinned up, her steps light and steady.Gary's eyes lit up in joy, and the urgency he had held in all the way here finally broke loose. He almost ran to her immediately, reaching out to grab her wrist. "Dana!"Before he could touch her, however, Alec stepped forward and blocked his path with a steady movement.Gary's hand froze midair. The sight of an unfamiliar man at Dana's side sent a surge of irritation through him.He snapped, his voice cold. "Move! This has nothing to do w

Gary stayed by Kelly's side all night. She finally woke up when dawn broke, her voice weak. "Gary, it was Sandy who pushed me down the stairs! She was the one who pointed those people after me and got me kidnapped two years ago! You have to make her pay for what she did!"He had already seen the footage, but hearing it from Kelly herself was a gut punch. His hand tightened around his sister's. "I'll make this right for you. Rest first. Don't think too much.""And Dana..." Kelly's voice broke. "I was so awful with her before this... Gary, I'm so sorry for what I did to Dana. You have to find her and bring her back, alright?""Alright. Just focus on getting better."Looking at Kelly's face, which was heavy with guilt, and then thinking of how he had misunderstood and hurt Dana, and how Sandy had spent all these years scheming and acting, the rage that had been buried in Gary's chest finally exploded. When he got home, the bodyguards were still holding Sandy in the middle of the li

Sandy froze, her face turning pale instantly as she tried to defend herself. "Gary, you... Don't misunderstand me! I was just worried because Kelly hasn't woken up! I got anxious, that's all. I didn't mean anything else!"Watching her put on the act, Gary felt a wave of disgust. He stepped closer, his voice like ice. "Misunderstand you? I heard every word you just said and everything you did."He then stared directly into her eyes. "I will ask you one more time. How did Kelly fall down the stairs?"Sandy's body shook even harder, but she still clenched her teeth and refused to admit anything. "She slipped on her own. It had nothing to do with me."Gary let out a cold laugh, disappointment and fury in his eyes. "You don't need to say anything. If I want the truth, I will find it eventually. I have no patience to waste on you right now."He took out his phone and called his assistant. "Bring two people to the hospital. Take Sandy back to the villa and make sure we have eyes on her.
