Two weeks passed in the blink of an eye.

Ethan was growing stronger every day.

His tiny cries had become louder.

His little hands opened and closed as though he were trying to catch the world around him.

And every morning, Evelyn found herself falling in love with him all over again.

Motherhood was nothing like she had imagined.

It was harder.

Messier.

Far more exhausting.

But it was also the happiest she had ever been.

The shrill cry of her phone broke the quiet of the apartment.

She glanced at the screen.

Grandma.

A smile spread across her face as she answered the video call.

"There are my two favourite people," Margaret beamed.

Evelyn turned the camera towards Ethan, who was sleeping soundly in her arms.

Margaret's eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Oh, look at him."

"He's gotten bigger already."

"I think he's eating all day," Evelyn said with a laugh.

"That's a good sign."

Margaret smiled warmly.

"Bring him closer."

Evelyn carefully adjusted the phone.

Margaret reached towards the screen as if she could touch her great-grandson.

"My handsome little boy."

"I wish I could hold you."

Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat.

"We wish you were here too."

Margaret looked at Evelyn for a long moment.

"You look different."

"Different?"

"Happier."

Evelyn looked down at Ethan.

"I am."

"For the first time in a very long time... I wake up smiling."

Margaret nodded.

"Your mother would be so proud of you."

Tears welled in Evelyn's eyes, but this time they were tears of gratitude.

That afternoon, there was another knock at the door.

Arthur stood outside carrying a large box.

"I hope I'm not interrupting."

"Not at all."

He stepped inside and placed the box on the dining table.

"I've brought something from everyone at the office."

Inside were baby clothes, books, soft toys and dozens of handwritten cards.

Each colleague had written a short message welcoming Ethan into the world.

One card read:

We can't wait to meet the little boy whose mum always inspired us.

Another said:

Take all the time you need. We'll keep your desk waiting.

Evelyn carefully read every single one.

By the time she reached the last card, tears had blurred her vision.

"I don't know how to thank all of them."

Arthur smiled.

"You already have."

"By giving your best every day you worked with us."

While Arthur held Ethan for the first time, the little boy opened his eyes and stared curiously at him.

Arthur chuckled.

"He's studying me."

"I hope he approves," Evelyn teased.

Arthur gently rocked him.

"I've negotiated million-pound contracts."

"But this..."

He looked down at the tiny baby in his arms.

"...is much more frightening."

They both laughed.

After a few moments, Ethan wrapped his tiny fingers around Arthur's index finger.

Arthur fell silent.

His expression softened.

"He has a strong grip."

"So everyone keeps telling me."

Arthur looked at Evelyn.

"He's a lucky little boy."

"No."

Evelyn smiled.

"I'm the lucky one."

That evening, after Arthur had gone home, Evelyn decided to start another tradition.

She opened Ethan's journal.

Instead of writing only letters, she began recording his milestones.

Two weeks old.

Today you held Arthur's finger for the first time.

You slept peacefully through the afternoon.

And every time I look at you, I still can't believe you're really here.

She paused, smiling as Ethan stirred in his cot.

Then she continued writing.

I don't know what tomorrow will bring, but I hope one day you'll read these pages and know how deeply you were loved from the very beginning.

She gently closed the journal.

Later that night, Evelyn stood by the nursery window with Ethan asleep against her shoulder.

The city lights shimmered across the River Thames in the distance.

She gently rubbed his tiny back until he gave a satisfied sigh.

"You know," she whispered, "everyone keeps saying I'm teaching you about life."

She smiled.

"But I think you're teaching me too."

"You've taught me patience."

"You've taught me courage."

"And you've taught me that love isn't something you beg for."

"It's something you give freely."

She kissed the top of his head.

Outside, another light snowfall began to cover the streets of London.

Inside the warm apartment, a young mother held her son close, unaware that across the ocean, Damian Sterling was beginning to question every decision that had led him to lose the woman who had once loved him unconditionally.

Neither of them knew it yet.

But the past was slowly making its way back into their lives.
