Chapter 3

Author: Wild Wheat
The first thing that greeted me after I woke up was a tight slap to the cheek.

Mom then yelled at me in disappointment, "You idiot! How dare you ask for a divorce from the Stallones? Don't you know that our family business relies heavily on the partnership with them? It's your honor to be able to marry someone of status!

"I swear to god, if you ever dare to bring up divorce again, I'll break both your legs so that you'll never be able to leave!"

The pain in my cheek spread like fire. However, the tears that dropped from my eyes were as cold as ice. I glared at the woman who had given birth to me and felt the fury boiling in my chest.

"I will divorce him."

Mom was stunned. Then, she grabbed her purse and started hitting me even harder than before.

"You stubborn bitch! You're so useless that you can't even stop Corbin from going back to that bitch, Ingrid! It's already good enough that he was willing to marry you in the first place! How dare you still want to divorce him? How dare you? How could you!"

I felt my body growing numb. I just grabbed onto the sheets even harder.

I had always sought my parents' validation ever since I was little. If I did things the way they wanted me to, then I would get praised for a short while. However, if I did something wrong in their eyes, then they would berate me and beat me up.

Gradually, I realized that in their eyes, I was nothing but a tool for them to gain benefits for the family. I would never have married Corbin if I hadn't listened to them in the first place.

I didn't want Ricky or Micky to end up being like me. That was why I held myself back and made compromises in all the years of my marriage to Corbin.

But now, I was done with it. I didn't want to do that anymore.

I gritted my teeth and didn't make another sound. I told myself that I didn't care who tried to stop me—I was determined to divorce Corbin and leave this place behind for good.

Corbin brought the twins into my ward and stood at the foot of my bed, looking cold and distant. Then, his parents, Tyson Stallone and Patricia Waters, followed him in.

Mom immediately went up to them and started buttering them up, promising them that I would never bring up the topic of divorce ever again.

Tyson and Patricia just made a few perfunctory remarks, telling me to stop acting up and to always look at the bigger picture, before leaving.

Ricky and Micky then each grabbed a marker and started doodling all over my face and body.

Ricky said, "You made Ingy sad! She won't even come and play with us anymore! You're horrible! Do you really think you're that great? I only want Daddy to kiss Ingy! We'll be a happy family without you!"

Micky then said, "I'm going to draw ugly poop on your face to punish you! You ruined Daddy and Ingy's relationship! I hate you! You're a poopy Mommy!

"You don't even know how much Daddy loves Ingy now. His phone is full of Ingy's photos! And he'll always cook for her when she's hungry, massage her shoulders when she's tired, and cheer her up when she's sad!

"Mommy is the worst! Get out of the way! You made us unable to see Ingy anymore!"

I didn't even need a mirror to know how terrible I looked.

Meanwhile, Corbin seemed to have known all along that things would end up like this. He was unexceptionally calm when he finally spoke.

"This is fun, isn't it? You finally look as ridiculous as you behave. Oh, do you regret it now? If you really divorce me, your family will fall into ruin. So, stop acting like a clown and—"

"I'm divorcing you." I didn't have any energy in my limbs, and the back of my head was still throbbing in pain, but my voice was firm and steady. "I swear that I'll divorce you, Corbin Stallone."

Corbin just scoffed mockingly and pinched my swollen red cheek. "Are you fucking done yet? Consider this a warning. Don't act all stubborn just for the sake of your dignity. You want a divorce from me? Over my fucking dead body!"

I bit into his wrist, forcing him to release me. He hissed aloud in pain. "Skylar Greene! I'm going to bankrupt your family before the end of tomorrow!"

I didn't back down and fought back. "Do it! But I'll still go through with the divorce!"

Corbin couldn't care less. He just said, "I'm looking forward to it."

Then, he left with the twins.

Corbin was summoned out by Ingrid for a business matter.I immediately jumped on the chance and ran out of the mansion. Then, I waited for Ingrid at the spot we had agreed upon. She was still as pretty as ever. Even her short trek to the coffee shop had everyone's attention turned toward her."How did you guess that I'd help you?" Ingrid went straight to the point. She was still as straightforward as I remembered her to be."Because you helped me once in the past," I answered simply. It had been during my lowest moment, when I was lying in the hospital with my life on the line. I had been all alone, but Ingrid suddenly came to visit me out of the blue. She brought me some fruits and apologized sincerely to me.That was when I asked her for a favor to slip my divorce papers between the pile of work documents that Corbin had to sign.Ingrid had been shocked, but she still agreed to help me in the end.I had told her that I wanted to live like her. "I want to be in charge of my li

There was no way I could let Ricky or Micky die without doing anything, even if they didn't want me as their mother anymore.I was anxious and wanted to see them as soon as possible, but I soon realized belatedly that Corbin wasn't taking me to the hospital. This was not the way there at all!"Corbin Stallone, are you sure that Micky is in the hospital?"Corbin sounded determined. "Do you really think I'd joke about our son's health?"His car rolled to a stop at the Stallone family's mansion. As soon as I got out of the car, Ricky and Micky immediately rushed over to me, excitedly calling out to me. They looked well and healthy as they bounced around me in glee. They didn't look the least bit sick at all.Corbin then stretched his arms wide open and smiled. "Welcome home, Skylar."I pushed the twins aside and stormed over to him, giving a big, fat slap on the face. "You lied to me!"Corbin's face was whipped to the side, but he didn't get angry. Instead, he just gloated and sai

I made a cup of black coffee for Corbin and slid it over to him. "Are you looking for me, Mr. Stallone?"Corbin rubbed his hands across his face, looking extremely exhausted. "Must we act like strangers, Skylar?"I leaned against the bar, watching him without another word.Corbin lifted the coffee mug and took a sip. "You're still great at this. You just look… different."I cocked an eyebrow at him. "It's 3.50 per cup. If you're here to enjoy coffee, then by all means, be my guest. But if you're here to talk about the past, then I'm going to have to show you the door."Corbin was very surprised at my attitude. He looked around and gave me a disdainful look that he couldn't even hide."If you divorced me to come here and work in this run-down coffee shop, I can just buy all the land within a five-mile radius for you."I didn't doubt that Corbin was perfectly capable of doing that. However, I hated his attitude when he spoke about it."That would be your business. But since we're

Skylar's POV:I rested for a few days after arriving in Evermist, a new city.Throughout those few days, I found myself glancing out at the mountains or the sea, from dawn to dusk, with nothing but a mug of coffee in hand.I had never felt so carefree in my life. I didn't have to worry about being yelled at or getting anxious over the twins. After tucking away the unpleasant memories of the past, I finally had plenty of time to think about starting and planning my new life. I had nothing to lose, so I wasn't afraid of anything. There were only good things to look forward to in my new life. I bet that Ingrid must have felt the same way before at some point in her life, especially when she first broke into the design industry all by herself.Today, the coffee shop I visited was a lot busier than usual. The owner was so busy with orders that she barely had time to breathe. I ordered myself a cup of coffee but didn't leave at once, wondering for a moment if she would appreciate some

Third-person POV:After an entire day of phone meetings, Corbin's throat felt parched. He had just leaned back to close his eyes for a moment when he suddenly heard Ricky and Micky fighting and crying outside his door. He pinched the bridge of his nose before walking out of the study.Ricky and Micky were hitting each other with their toys, fighting over the last piece of fruit roll-up. Meanwhile, Ingrid was just sitting on the couch with a hand to her forehead.Corbin asked in an accusatory tone, "Wait, are you just watching them fight like this without doing anything?"Ingrid was shocked and immediately shot back, "What are you expecting me to do? They're fighting over a freaking fruit roll-up! I already told them that we could go out and get more, but they just wouldn't listen!"Also, Corbin Stallone, what right do you have to yell at me like that? Are they my kids? You keep throwing them to me as if I don't have any work to get done myself!"Realization finally dawned on Corb

  • Divorced and Unbound   Chapter 4

Corbin never showed his face anymore. However, I kept getting updates about them while I was recovering in the hospital. Corbin had basically let Ingrid stay at our home indefinitely under the guise of needing Ingrid to take care of the twins for him. They brought the twins to many places. They watched the sunset at the beach, went on the merry-go-round at the amusement park, and even caught a weekend flight to a tropical country to feed bananas to elephants. They kept documenting their happy moments as a family.Corbin even purposely learned how to handwash Ingrid's expensive yet delicate clothes, went to flower arrangement classes to craft bouquets for her, wore the ugly tie Ingrid knotted for him to work, ate her burnt food and praised it like it came from a Michelin-starred restaurant, and basically told her how gifted she was at everything she did.It was everything I had ever hoped for. I had wanted that life, but Ingrid got everything I wanted without even having to lift a
