Chapter 1

Author: Ginkgo Tales
There was an hour left before the wedding.

I sat before the vanity mirror, staring at photos from Hannah Hawkes' ex, Lucas Tate, on my phone. In them, he wore my custom-tailored suit and smiled as he held her by the waist.

Hannah looked up at him with eyes full of affection.

His text followed. "She said I look better in this than you do.

"If you want your wedding to go smoothly, beg me."

I locked the screen and looked up at the makeup artist. "About the custom-tailored suit I couldn't wear at the last minute, is it true that there was just a tailoring error?"

I had booked the styling team along with the suit. They handled everything from my makeup to photography.

I had paid a fortune and spent weeks coordinating details just to make sure everything would be perfect for the wedding.

Now, the makeup artist couldn't meet my eyes, but that was enough of an answer.

I thought of how distracted Hannah had been when she went wedding-gown-fitting with me, and how she had brushed me off with the busy-with-work excuse when I asked for her opinion on my suit.

It turned out that she hadn't been busy; she just never cared about the wedding at all.

Now, she stood beside Lucas, grinning from ear to ear.

I gripped my phone tighter and took a deep breath. "Please tell Hannah to come here."

I needed an explanation.

After the makeup artist's assistant went to fetch her, I stared at the ill-fitting suit in the mirror and could barely breathe. It struck me that maybe clothes that didn't fit were never meant to be worn in the first place.

Before Hannah arrived, the wedding emcee arrived first. He wore the same look of guilt and apology on his face.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Jasper Caldwell, but you don't have to attend the wedding."

I almost laughed in disbelief. "What are you talking about? Are you telling me that as the groom, I can't attend the wedding? Is that what you mean?"

Just as he opened his mouth to explain, Hannah walked in. "It was my decision."

She wore the wedding gown I had custom-designed for her. It was meant to match my suit. However, the veil she was wearing wasn't the one I had picked.

When she noticed that my gaze was fixed on her veil, she shifted uncomfortably and cleared her throat.

"Lucas is having his surgery in a few days, and the hospital issued a critical notice. He said his last wish is to wear a suit at a wedding."

I let out a quiet scoff. "At ours?"

I knew who Lucas was. Three years into dating Hannah, I learned that she had an ex-boyfriend who had lost all his hair to chemotherapy.

They were childhood sweethearts, and their families were close. Even after the breakup, they couldn't completely cut ties.

Since he was receiving treatment in another city, his parents, William Tate and Doreen Bartlett, had asked Hannah, who stayed nearby, to look after him.

At first, I respected and sympathized with him. After all, he was a man in his prime, tormented by illness. Then, the favors started. Our date nights started ending early because she had to rush off to deliver soup to him, and that was how my impression of him plummeted.

Time and again, I gave in because he was sick, and Hannah had always been careful to put my feelings first. Whenever Lucas asked her for something, she would tell me and only head over if it was urgent.

Sometimes, she would bring me along, until today.

When had she taken him to the bridal boutique for fittings? When exactly had she decided to give him my custom-tailored suit? When had she decided that he would replace me in our wedding?

The elevator stopped on the first floor before Darryl stepped in after having picked up a few packages. The moment he stepped in, I instinctively let go of Freya's hand.Holding hands in front of other people was fine, but doing it in front of Darryl felt awkward. It was as if I had somehow stolen his little sister.Freya shot me a quiet look, then quietly talked to Darryl about something else. I chimed in every now and then.Halfway through, Darryl nudged Freya aside and shoved his phone in front of me to show me some gossip."Darryl," Freya suddenly cut in."What?" he impatiently replied."How did I know I spent 30 dollars today?""What 30 dollars are you talking about?" Darryl blinked. At the thought of Freya's "accidental" marriage certificate drop, a terrible gut feeling rose in my chest. Just as I was about to interrupt, Freya took out our marriage certificate. She turned it under the elevator light and carefully studied it, completely capturing Darryl's attention.I

While walking back home, I felt a slight itch on my fingers.Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Freya trying to sneak her hand toward mine, only to swiftly pull back. Her wrist was so tiny I could wrap my thumb and forefinger around it. Her hands were small and soft, which was exactly my type. I bet they would be easy to hold. After a few more attempts, she realized I had noticed her and jerked her head away. Her ears flushed a deep, vivid red, while her fingers tangled together in a knot.It struck me that she blushed really easily…When I reached out and took her hand in mine, she dared not look at me, but her fingers curled around mine in return. We walked the rest of the way home in that awkward, sweet silence until we arrived at the front of the building. Freya's expression fell when she saw who was waiting by the door.Hannah was there. Her gaze paused briefly on our joined hands. When Freya instinctively tried to pull away, I tightened my grip, and she looked up at

Once Hannah was completely out of sight, I beckoned to Freya. "Come down and stop acting now. It's dangerous up there."Freya's bright, lively face flushed red with traces of awkwardness and uncertainty. I quickly stepped forward, took her hand, and helped her over the railing to safety.Darryl's eyes nearly popped out of his head. "Wait… Have you known all along?"I laughed. "Not from the start. It was from when she started reciting lines."He sheepishly scratched his head and murmured in a puzzled tone, "So, why did you play along with us?"I glanced at Freya and replied, "If I didn't, how were you going to end this act? Was she going to jump for real?"He coughed under the retort, while Freya's face turned even redder as she hid behind Darryl.I slung an arm around his shoulder and laughed. "I know you meant well, but this time, I'm serious when I say that I'm done with Hannah.""Glad to hear that," he muttered, still looking a little awkward. As Darryl and I started headin

Freya glanced at Hannah and said, "I'd had a crush on you for a year by the time she met you."Hannah looked completely lost. It seemed as if she did not understand what we were talking about.Freya continued, "I was going to tell you how I felt back then, but you told me you had feelings for someone else."I froze and vaguely remembered that the year Hannah and I started dating, Freya had just been admitted to our college and often came to me for advice. Hannah used to get incredibly jealous, so I kept my distance from Freya on purpose under the excuse of being busy with schoolwork. Now that I thought about it, I felt another pang of bitterness. Did Hannah really not understand boundaries in relationships? No, she understood them perfectly and simply kept testing my limits.Freya's voice, carried by the wind, gradually softened and turned more natural. "I thought as long as she could make you happy, I could handle watching you two get married. But after she humiliated you at

After returning home, I gave my parents a quick update before returning to my apartment and sleeping like the dead, right through the morning. When I woke up, I wasn't surprised to see a post on Instagram announcing Lucas' successful surgery. I gave it a like and was genuinely happy for him.I had barely taken two bites of breakfast when Hannah showed up at my door again. The apartment my parents bought for me was right above theirs, with the Jensen siblings living right next door.Darryl heard the doorbell once Hannah rang it. After a brief scuffle in the hallway, I heard furious shouting and fighting.I opened the door to find Hannah disheveled and drenched from head to toe. When she saw me, she swallowed her anger and forced a smile. "I brought you breakfast."I looked at the sandwiches she was holding and asked, "Has Lucas had his breakfast yet?"Hannah replied, "I understand that I didn't handle things well, but Lucas' surgery is over, and nothing's going to stand in our

Lucas clearly hadn't expected me to show up. Once Hannah went up to the side of his bed, he lunged forward and threw his arms around her.Almost on instinct, she hugged him back. The worry and tension in her eyes were painfully clear.Lucas' loud kiss on her cheek followed.Hannah held him tight and refused to let go. It wasn't until she turned to look at me that he noticed that I was standing in the doorway.I had just put my phone away after sending the video I had just recorded of them clinging to each other to William.Along with it, I included screenshots of Lucas' threatening messages before the wedding and the videos he had sent me.The Tates were intellectuals with respectable morals. From our first meeting, I knew that they were good people stuck with a rotten son.The fact that they hadn't shown up at the wedding told me they didn't know the truth, so I figured that I should give them a chance to witness the way their well-behaved son humiliated others.Lucas grumbl
