Chapter 2

Penulis: Shirley
I looked quietly at Declan and gave a soft, cold laugh. "What do you think?"

I waited for him to make his choice.

His eyes stayed on my face for three seconds before he looked away. He had clearly made up his mind.

"Katerina, I have to say, these numbers look bad." Declan cleared his throat and put on his boss act. "As a rising crew, we have to keep a strict eye on mob rules and our money. Rules are rules."

I saw a flash of triumph in Roxy's eyes.

"With that in mind," Declan turned to look at the scarred accountant. "Take Katerina's keys. The armory, the hidden vault, the smuggling ledgers, and the club safe codes. Take them all."

Scarface didn't even look up. He just nodded and said, "You got it, Boss."

"Also," Declan continued. "Roxy, I'm officially putting you in charge of getting this half-million back. Our crew is about to take on a big contract. Every penny counts."

"No problem, Boss." Roxy almost jumped to answer, unable to hide the excitement in her voice. "I'll take some boys to secure her spots right now."

She shot me a nasty glare, making no secret of her hostility. "This kind of betrayal has to be handled strictly. We can't give you a pass just because you two grew up together."

Declan nodded with satisfaction. "Good. Also, put the word out to all our turfs as a warning to the boys."

I finally saw through their game.

This wasn't about enforcing rules at all. It was a pre-rehearsed power grab.

Declan wanted my underworld connections. He wanted the high-roller contacts and the supply networks of the arms dealers.

And Roxy wanted my spot.

This stupid girl thought that if she kicked me down, she could naturally take over the club. She thought she would become the rightful queen of the crew next to Declan.

What a joke.

After announcing the punishment, Declan looked at me and put on an earnest face. "Don't worry, Katerina. Once you pay the money back, I'll make sure you are safe. Everything will go back to the way it was."

"By the way," Declan added, pretending to sound casual. "Since you can't run things for a while, we can't lose contact with those suppliers. You need to hand over your little black book too."

I stood up slowly, pulled a small black leather book from my purse, and placed it gently on the table.

"All the clients' contacts, codes, and meeting points are in here." I kept my voice calm.

A greedy light flashed in Declan's eyes. He could barely wait to reach out and snatch it.

"I just hope," I took a step back and gave him a small smile. "That you can actually handle them."

Thirty minutes later, I was sitting in the spacious club manager's office. I listened to the constant whistling coming from the lobby downstairs.

The word had just been sent to all our turfs. The message read: Club Manager Katerina Breaks Mob Rules and Steals Money.

The message listed my crimes in detail. Working with rivals behind the boss's back, using crew money for personal luxury, stealing smuggling profits, and setting a bad example.

I could already hear the street grunts whispering right outside the door.

"Damn, I can't believe Katerina was actually stealing right under the boss's nose."

"Half a million dollars? Her appetite is way too fucking big."

"I always knew those sports cars she drove came from dirty money."

"Roxy did a great job. Let's see how Katerina acts all high and mighty now."

The boys who used to line up in the VIP rooms to toast me were now enjoying my downfall. The dealers who used to bow and kiss up to me in the casino were thrilled.

I looked at the bouquet of lily of the valley on my desk. It was fresh from this morning, with water drops still hanging on the petals.

I was really too naive. I actually thought that on these streets, true loyalty could be bought with a real heart.

Just then, the office door was kicked open.

Roxy strutted in, followed by two thugs with holstered guns.

She walked straight up to my desk and slammed a stack of receipts down.

"Katerina," she looked at me with the attitude of a new boss. "These are the cooked books. It totals five hundred and six thousand dollars. The boss has given the order."

"You have exactly three days to pay the money back. Otherwise, we handle this the hard way. I'll personally have someone chop off your fingers."

She cried even harder, snot and tears smearing all over her face."I know I was wrong! I really know I was wrong! Please show mercy, I'll never dare do it again!"I looked down at her groveling like a dog, and felt absolutely nothing."You know you were wrong?""Do you have any idea how much blood I sweat for that crew?""I took eight million in cash from the family vault to fix Declan's mess at the docks. I used a network my uncle spent over a decade building just to earn him some respect. I rented out an entire building to him at a dirt-cheap price. And you?"I stared down at her kneeling on the ground, my voice dropping lower inch by inch."You took all of it for granted. You forged ledgers to drag my name through the mud. You went live on the dark web and made up lies, trying to get the whole city to hunt me. Now that you're a wanted fugitive sitting at the top of the hit lists, you actually feel wronged?"The surrounding reporters and the Five Family reps all held their breath. Ev

Faced with question after question from the rival family Capos, Roxy completely broke. The tears on her face were no longer acting. It was pure fear seeping out from her bones."I, I can explain." Her lips were trembling, and she couldn't even string a sentence together. An anonymous rival boss on the call sneered. "Explain what? Explain how you climbed into your boss's bed to frame Katerina, and then sold out your boys' routes?"The chat had now completely turned into a tidal wave of death threats."These two animals!""Taking her guns, driving her cars, living in her building, and then trying to steal her turf?""Fuck them, rule-breakers have to die!"I sat by the floor-to-ceiling window in my apartment, slowly watching the two of them squirm on screen.Suddenly, the iron door of that broken-down basement was kicked open.A group of thugs with mean faces and guns in their waistbands rushed in. The bald man leading them pointed right at Declan's nose and cursed."Declan, you motherfuc

The next afternoon, Declan and Roxy started a stream on the dark web.Behind them was a moldy concrete wall. A bare bulb hung overhead. They sat behind a battered metal desk, having purposely rubbed some dirt on their faces.Roxy's hair was a mess, and her eyes were swollen. She sobbed at the camera, playing the victim hard."I'm just a girl who crawled out of the slums, trying to make a living on these streets. The only thing I did wrong was finding proof of that big family princess skimming, and then, you all see it. This is what happens to me today."The chat rolled by at a crazy speed."The big families are too arrogant! They don't leave people any way to live!""This is just bullying for turf!""The princesses of those big families are all vampires!""I stand with Roxy! We street crews have to unite and get justice!"I watched the screen full of hateful comments, my expression as calm as ever.Declan started his performance too, his voice full of fake grief."We just want to quiet

My phone was now being bombarded with all kinds of messages.Declan, Roxy, the boys in the crew who were keeping their heads down yesterday, and even the doormen were frantically dialing my number.Declan's texts were the most frequent. They went from furious threats, to desperate begging, to a blubbering mess where he couldn't even type the words properly."Katerina, are you fucking crazy? Do you know what you're doing?""Your shooters are trashing our spot? What the hell does this mean?""Please, tell them to stop! I'll give you whatever you want!""We grew up together! You can't do this to me!""Katerina, I was wrong, I know I was wrong! Just let me off, I'll do anything!"It seemed he finally figured out that death threats were useless. Now he was playing the sympathy card. The funny thing was, my uncle moved even faster than I expected. The official order from the Cosa Nostra family had already been sent out through the Five Families' underground network."The Salvatore Family is

Looking at the speechless Declan, I turned my face away in disgust."Uncle Salvatore," I turned to my uncle, my tone calm again. "I've made up my mind. Starting today, I'm taking over this street myself. I want absolutely nothing more to do with this little crew or this man."A look of approval flashed in Salvatore's eyes, followed by a cold snort. He looked at Declan kneeling on the ground. His tone was like a death sentence. "Good. I am officially announcing that the family is pulling all muscle and smuggling deals with your crew. From this moment on, no soldier from the Five Families on this street will recognize you as a Capo."Declan's face turned completely ashen. He opened his mouth in despair, but no sound came out.Roxy was trembling next to him. She finally realized what a massive disaster she had caused.Salvatore elegantly adjusted the cuffs of his dark grey suit and held his arm out to me. "Niece, get in the car with your uncle. We'll talk on the way about how to set up yo

I ignored Declan's hysterical questioning.I pushed the car door open, stepped out in my black boots, and slowly walked out into full view. When Declan saw me, he thought I was there to save the day.He immediately hung up the phone and rushed toward me, reaching out to grab my arm."Katerina! You're finally here! Quick, tell the guards to let us in."I pulled my hand back coldly and took a step back, dodging him like he was garbage."Declan," my tone was flat. "You kicked me out of the crew yourself. Naturally, I'm no longer protecting you. Isn't that the most basic rule on the streets?"The color instantly drained from Declan's face. "You, you can't be this ruthless!"Standing to the side, Roxy was still foolishly fanning the flames. She clicked closer in her sky-high heels, her tone full of fake accusations."Katerina, you can't mix personal grudges with crew business. This is a twenty-million-dollar deal, the livelihood of all our boys! How could you let a little bruised ego ruin i
