Chapter 5

Penulis: Shirley
Over the following week, I strictly followed every single rule of a bottom-tier street soldier.

Every night I showed up at the dirty blocks on time and left at dawn.

I never collected an extra cent. I never drew my gun or poked my nose into anyone's business.

I didn't set foot in the club, nor did I contact a single gambler or supplier.

I was tossed into that run-down Irish pub on the corner. I sat behind the bar, collecting crumpled protection bills from small shops, occasionally dealing with a few drunk bums.

Meanwhile, on Roxy's end, it was like putting on a grand show.

She changed into a different mink or leather coat every day. The diamonds on her neck got bigger by the day. She walked up and down the street arm in arm with Declan, showing off.

What was even funnier was that she posted an update on the crew's network almost every two hours.

"A new day begins! Martini in hand, conquering this street! #Queen #SecondInCommand"

"Private meeting with the dock freight boss. Always expanding the turf, always getting stronger! #TopPlayer #WinningAtLife"

Every post came with photos of her posing with a pistol in the luxury office, or staged shots at mob banquets.

But what was the actual situation?

Through my own informants, I could clearly see every single time she hit a brick wall.

She spent most of her time at the club flirting with the boys, touching up her lipstick in the mirror, or bragging online.

The few times she took men to negotiate at the docks, they all ended up getting thrown out.

"What? You won't release the goods? But our crew is about to take over this whole block..."

"Wait, wait, we can discuss the cut on the protection money again..."

"Hello? Hello? Fuck, they hung up again!"

I listened to my boys report on her hitting dead ends over and over again. I just kept counting the coins in my hand with a blank face.

By Wednesday, things at the docks had gotten ugly.

Three shipments of the crew's smuggled goods were seized back-to-back by the port security team.

Declan came to me furiously.

"Katerina, you know all the crew's goods are being held at the docks right now, right?"

I looked up and blinked at him with an innocent face. "The goods got seized? That really is a shame."

"Don't play dumb with me!" Declan slammed his hand on the bar and snarled.

"Why didn't you pay off the port boss this week? You're just watching the crew's money line get cut off!"

"Declan," I put down the rag in my hand and looked at him seriously. "I'm just strictly following crew rules. You gave the order yourself. I lost my power and I'm reflecting on my mistakes."

"If I went over Roxy's head right now to negotiate with the docks, wouldn't that be openly defying the boss's orders?"

Declan's face got uglier by the second. "You..."

"Besides," I continued with a smile. "Didn't you make Roxy the club manager and your second-in-command? Paying off the docks, clearing up the suppliers, that's all her job now. I'm just a punished soldier working a street corner collecting loose change. How could I possibly steal the new manager's credit?"

Declan clenched his fists. I could even see the veins bulging on his neck.

"Are you fucking threatening me?" he said through gritted teeth.

"Threatening you?" I chuckled. "I'm just a bottom-tier street soldier doing my job."

Declan glared at me hard for a long time. Then he suddenly forced out a cold laugh.

"Fine, very good."

"You think this crew can't run without you? Fine. Just watch. I'm about to sign Don Salvatore's deal and lock down the smuggling monopoly for the whole city. I don't need a single finger from you!"

With that, he spun around and yelled at the top of his lungs to the crew boys out on the street.

"From this moment on, as the Capo of this street, I officially announce that Katerina is out of this crew!"

All movement on the street stopped. Everyone stared over in shock.

I slowly walked out from behind the bar, took off my apron, and just nodded calmly. No anger, no excuses.

"Understood."

Declan clearly didn't expect me to be so calm. He frowned. "You don't have anything to say?"

"No." I picked up my leather jacket hanging on the wall and buttoned it up one by one. "You're the Capo, your word is the rule. Of course, I will comply."

My straightforwardness seemed to creep him out a little.

And in that moment, every single piece of my next move was already on the board.

Back at my apartment, I took a manila folder out of my safe.

Declan had probably forgotten long ago that the lease for this club building expired tomorrow.

I called my family's muscle, Rocco.

"The lease on my building is up tomorrow. I'm getting ready to clear it out."

"Understood, Principessa. What time do we move?"

Rocco let out a deep laugh on the other end. "How many men? How much heat?"

"Enough to kick the doors in. Enough so nobody inside dares to speak."

I stared at the night sky outside my window, saying every word slowly. "Tomorrow morning at ten. Bring enough men and guns, and empty out my building."

She cried even harder, snot and tears smearing all over her face."I know I was wrong! I really know I was wrong! Please show mercy, I'll never dare do it again!"I looked down at her groveling like a dog, and felt absolutely nothing."You know you were wrong?""Do you have any idea how much blood I sweat for that crew?""I took eight million in cash from the family vault to fix Declan's mess at the docks. I used a network my uncle spent over a decade building just to earn him some respect. I rented out an entire building to him at a dirt-cheap price. And you?"I stared down at her kneeling on the ground, my voice dropping lower inch by inch."You took all of it for granted. You forged ledgers to drag my name through the mud. You went live on the dark web and made up lies, trying to get the whole city to hunt me. Now that you're a wanted fugitive sitting at the top of the hit lists, you actually feel wronged?"The surrounding reporters and the Five Family reps all held their breath. Ev

Faced with question after question from the rival family Capos, Roxy completely broke. The tears on her face were no longer acting. It was pure fear seeping out from her bones."I, I can explain." Her lips were trembling, and she couldn't even string a sentence together. An anonymous rival boss on the call sneered. "Explain what? Explain how you climbed into your boss's bed to frame Katerina, and then sold out your boys' routes?"The chat had now completely turned into a tidal wave of death threats."These two animals!""Taking her guns, driving her cars, living in her building, and then trying to steal her turf?""Fuck them, rule-breakers have to die!"I sat by the floor-to-ceiling window in my apartment, slowly watching the two of them squirm on screen.Suddenly, the iron door of that broken-down basement was kicked open.A group of thugs with mean faces and guns in their waistbands rushed in. The bald man leading them pointed right at Declan's nose and cursed."Declan, you motherfuc

The next afternoon, Declan and Roxy started a stream on the dark web.Behind them was a moldy concrete wall. A bare bulb hung overhead. They sat behind a battered metal desk, having purposely rubbed some dirt on their faces.Roxy's hair was a mess, and her eyes were swollen. She sobbed at the camera, playing the victim hard."I'm just a girl who crawled out of the slums, trying to make a living on these streets. The only thing I did wrong was finding proof of that big family princess skimming, and then, you all see it. This is what happens to me today."The chat rolled by at a crazy speed."The big families are too arrogant! They don't leave people any way to live!""This is just bullying for turf!""The princesses of those big families are all vampires!""I stand with Roxy! We street crews have to unite and get justice!"I watched the screen full of hateful comments, my expression as calm as ever.Declan started his performance too, his voice full of fake grief."We just want to quiet

My phone was now being bombarded with all kinds of messages.Declan, Roxy, the boys in the crew who were keeping their heads down yesterday, and even the doormen were frantically dialing my number.Declan's texts were the most frequent. They went from furious threats, to desperate begging, to a blubbering mess where he couldn't even type the words properly."Katerina, are you fucking crazy? Do you know what you're doing?""Your shooters are trashing our spot? What the hell does this mean?""Please, tell them to stop! I'll give you whatever you want!""We grew up together! You can't do this to me!""Katerina, I was wrong, I know I was wrong! Just let me off, I'll do anything!"It seemed he finally figured out that death threats were useless. Now he was playing the sympathy card. The funny thing was, my uncle moved even faster than I expected. The official order from the Cosa Nostra family had already been sent out through the Five Families' underground network."The Salvatore Family is

Looking at the speechless Declan, I turned my face away in disgust."Uncle Salvatore," I turned to my uncle, my tone calm again. "I've made up my mind. Starting today, I'm taking over this street myself. I want absolutely nothing more to do with this little crew or this man."A look of approval flashed in Salvatore's eyes, followed by a cold snort. He looked at Declan kneeling on the ground. His tone was like a death sentence. "Good. I am officially announcing that the family is pulling all muscle and smuggling deals with your crew. From this moment on, no soldier from the Five Families on this street will recognize you as a Capo."Declan's face turned completely ashen. He opened his mouth in despair, but no sound came out.Roxy was trembling next to him. She finally realized what a massive disaster she had caused.Salvatore elegantly adjusted the cuffs of his dark grey suit and held his arm out to me. "Niece, get in the car with your uncle. We'll talk on the way about how to set up yo

I ignored Declan's hysterical questioning.I pushed the car door open, stepped out in my black boots, and slowly walked out into full view. When Declan saw me, he thought I was there to save the day.He immediately hung up the phone and rushed toward me, reaching out to grab my arm."Katerina! You're finally here! Quick, tell the guards to let us in."I pulled my hand back coldly and took a step back, dodging him like he was garbage."Declan," my tone was flat. "You kicked me out of the crew yourself. Naturally, I'm no longer protecting you. Isn't that the most basic rule on the streets?"The color instantly drained from Declan's face. "You, you can't be this ruthless!"Standing to the side, Roxy was still foolishly fanning the flames. She clicked closer in her sky-high heels, her tone full of fake accusations."Katerina, you can't mix personal grudges with crew business. This is a twenty-million-dollar deal, the livelihood of all our boys! How could you let a little bruised ego ruin i
