Chapter 2

Author: Faith Catherine
The ties that had bound me for so many years suddenly felt as though they no longer existed.

I quickly replied.

[Of course. Give me four days.]

James’ birthday was in three days. I planned to leave once it was over.

Less than a second after I sent the message, my friend's excited reply popped up.

[Can't wait! We'll celebrate properly when you get here.]

After booking my flight, I looked up as Yvette pushed open the bedroom door. She wore the same gentle smile she always did.

"What's wrong with you today? Not only did you skip cooking for James, but you've been crying, too?"

I stared at her. If I had not overheard those words earlier, I might have believed that warm, caring expression.

"I'm sick. The family cook is here. Let her make dinner."

"James only likes your cooking," she said. "Stop being stubborn."

"I said, I'm sick."

Her expression froze for a second, as if she was not used to me speaking to her that way.

"Usually, you'd still cook for him even if you had a fever..."

She did not care about me at all. The only reason I had never noticed before was that I had spent years deceiving myself.

What kind of wife saw her sick husband and only cared about what her child was going to eat?

Perhaps my silence made her realize she had gone too far. She quickly added, "Anyway, Eric bought James some fried chicken. If you come out, the two of us can just eat something simple."

I gave a faint nod.

"Hmm."

That only seemed to confuse her more.

In the past, the moment I heard James was eating takeout, I would immediately ask about the ingredients.

Today, I asked nothing.

When I followed her into the living room, I found James holding a piece of fried chicken.

He was on a video call with Eric, chatting happily as laughter echoed through the room.

It was as if the hostile child from earlier had never existed.

I studied his features. The more I looked, the more his eyes resembled Eric's.

Yvette scooped James into her arms and greeted Eric on the screen with a gentle smile.

Meanwhile, I silently ate the food in front of me. It tasted like cardboard.

The three of them laughed and talked through the video call like a perfect family of three.

I was the outsider.

The family cook carried over a plate of meatloaf and placed it in front of me.

"Sir, Mrs. Scott specifically asked me to make this for you. She said it's your favorite. Mrs. Scott is so thoughtful."

My hand froze around my fork. I had never eaten beef, and Yvette knew that better than anyone. I had reminded her countless times over the years, yet she still ordered it whenever we went out to eat. I had always assumed she did it because she liked it. Looking back now, I realized I might have been wrong all along.

Eric's eyes lit up on the screen. "Oh, meatloaf! I love that."

Yvette immediately replied, "And you like it with extra spice, right?"

Eric smiled warmly. "That's right."

Then, he looked toward the camera. "Draven, you're not upset that James is eating fried chicken, are you? It's my fault. I was only thinking about what James likes."

Yvette's expression stiffened. She glanced at me before answering casually, "No. He's fine."

A trace of confusion entered Eric's voice. "Huh? Oh... Well, that's good..."

Before he could finish speaking, a series of loud crashes suddenly came from his side of the call.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

It sounded like something was being smashed. The video abruptly disconnected.

Yvette shot to her feet instantly, panic written all over her face. Only when she noticed me watching did she casually throw out an excuse. "Something came up at the office."

Even her lies were lazy. I did not need to guess where she was going.

She was going to find Eric.

James jumped up as well and grabbed Yvette's hand anxiously.

"Mom, take me with you. Take me!"

Without waiting for me to say a word, the two of them hurried out the door.

I stared at the empty dining table.

Suddenly, the whole thing felt ridiculous.

Eight years of marriage, and I had been kept in the dark like a fool.

I picked up my fork and put a piece of meat into my mouth.

A sharp burst of spice rushed straight up my nose, making my eyes water instantly.

Then, I remembered. Every time Yvette ordered food, she would choose salty, spicy dishes.

I could not help laughing."Ms. Shaw, if you're still half asleep, go splash some water on your face. What kind of fantasy are you babbling about?"The color drained from Yvette’s face. For a moment, she looked as though she might break down right there in front of everyone."I never married Eric. I've been waiting for you to change your mind. You're the one I love."I was just confused for a while."Confused?I almost laughed again. It was more likely that she had finally realized marrying Eric brought her absolutely no benefits. If anything, it would only make the Shaw Group board resent her even more.I was about to make that point when a voice suddenly cut in."Yvette, what are you talking to him about?" Eric appeared out of nowhere and grabbed her arm.The way he looked at me was almost comical, like a dog guarding its food, terrified someone might take it away.Yvette immediately shook off his hand. Her patience had clearly run out."Why are you here? Every time you

At this point, Yvette only had ten percent of Shaw Group's shares left, and with her stake reduced to almost nothing, her influence within the company had naturally plummeted as well. Judging by the way she was acting, she was clearly running out of options."Have your lawyer talk to my assistant."I could not be bothered to waste any more words on her. With that, I turned and walked away. She immediately tried to follow, but my assistant stepped in and blocked her path before she could get any closer.By the time I reached the parking lot and was about to get into my car, Eric suddenly appeared in front of me. A twisted sense of satisfaction lingered in his eyes, as though he believed he had finally won."Draven, you lost. No one truly loves you."Anyone who stays by your side eventually falls in love with me."I looked him up and down, unable to hide my amusement. The suit he was wearing was obviously from an old collection, and even his dress shoes were badly worn. Judging f

"What's wrong, James?" Yvette asked, pulling him close. "Talk to me."Eric hurried over, wearing the expression of a loving father. "Come on, James. Tell me what happened—"Before he could finish, James shoved him away. "Get away from me! You're not my dad! It's all your fault! Everyone keeps calling me a b*stard! I want Dad! I don't want you!"Eric's face went from pale to red before paling again. He stood there awkwardly, completely frozen. He had probably never imagined that the kid who used to call him ‘Papa’ every other sentence would turn on him so quickly."James, I am your father," Eric said, still unwilling to give up. "Didn't you love me the most before?"James answered by spitting at him. "Ugh! No, you're not!"It's because of you that Dad left! I hate you!"He had completely forgotten that he had played a part in driving me away.Yvette's expression darkened. Storm clouds seemed to gather behind her eyes.Just then, my lawyer called."Mr. Scott, Ms. Shaw says she

To my surprise, the voice on the other end was Yvette's.Her voice was gentle and a little helpless."Draven, James has a fever. The doctor is asking what medications he's allergic to.""Penicillin," I replied coldly. "If they're not sure, have them run an allergy test. Stop bothering me!""Draven, I can't take care of him by myself." Her voice softened into a plea. "Eric doesn't know how to take care of children either. James has been vomiting and having diarrhea for days. He's had gastroenteritis for almost a week..."I let out a mocking laugh.Back when I was still around, James was always sneaking junk food from Eric behind my back. Whether it was ice cream, extra-spicy snacks, or fried chicken, Eric never seemed to have a problem indulging him. If it was unhealthy, chances were that Eric had bought it.Whenever James ended up with stomach problems, Yvette would blame me for not being careful enough."I have no obligation to help."After hanging up, I blocked that number t

I let out a mocking laugh. "He's Eric's kid, isn't he? If you do the math, he was probably conceived on our wedding night. That must have been hard for you. After rolling around in bed with him, you still forced yourself to climb into mine.""Draven!" Yvette snapped, her voice trembling with anger and humiliation. "Do you have to insult me like this?"I laughed bitterly. "Who's insulting who?"What was I to you? Did you ever think about me when you were sleeping with him? And now you actually have the nerve to say I'm the one insulting you?"I took a deep breath. The emotions I had buried for years were pressing against the edge of my sanity."Just sign the papers. From now on, we’ll go our separate ways. We'll have nothing to do with each other."Without waiting for a response, I hung up. Then, I blocked her number.A moment later, Lucas pushed open the office door, carrying two cups of coffee.Seeing how pale I looked, he frowned. "Are you okay?"I accepted the coffee and s

By the time my plane landed in San Marco, autumn was already in full swing.I tightened my trench coat around me, but a chill still slipped through the collar and crawled down my neck."You finally decided to leave the country!"Lucas Rogers spread his arms wide from a distance and pulled me into a solid hug.A wave of guilt hit me.For all these years, he had been handling almost all of our joint business ventures by himself.I was always tied up with James. One day, it was a cold or a fever, and the next, he would wake up crying in the middle of the night. He was like a ticking time bomb, capable of blowing up my plans at any moment."Thanks for carrying the load all these years. From now on, I'll be working alongside you."I patted him on the shoulder, completely sincere.Lucas scratched his head and looked at me suspiciously. "Are you serious, or are you just saying that? What about James and Yvette? Can you really leave them behind?"A bitter smile crossed my face."Ye
