Chapter 2

Author: Deep Gem
This time, just as I'd fantasized, I drew all the liquid from the bottle into the syringe. Although I wasn't sure what dosage would cause cardiac arrest, this much should be enough.

I rolled up my sleeve and placed the syringe needle tip against the exposed vein on my forearm. When the needle pierced my skin, I instinctively flinched.

My thumb, pressing on the plunger, just wouldn't push down.

Jack, what do you have left to cling to?! You've fallen out with your parents, lost your job, cut ties with almost all your friends, and now even your girlfriend, whom you consider your pillar of support, has betrayed you.

Family, friendship, love, career... you have nothing left. Why not just leave this world? Even being a rich family's dog in the next life would be better than a life like this.

But why was my thumb trembling so violently?

Push it, push it down! I suddenly screamed like a madman, looking utterly insane, then instantly lost all strength and threw the syringe aside.

I heard many suicide victims regretted it just before death. Turned out it was true. I knew why my thumb couldn't push down. It was simple: I was scared, I was afraid of dying!

The will to live is a biological instinct, and suicide is resisting that instinct. Many people want to die but fear pain, and in the end, after suffering pain, they go to the hospital, which shows they still have a will to live deep down inside.

Dang it, dang it, Jack, you coward!

The honking suddenly stopped. I stood up, walked to the edge of the rooftop, and leaned over to look down. The noisy Mercedes downstairs was finally driving away.

Suddenly, I had another idea. Wendy and that man's room was directly above the hotel entrance. They were doing their "thing" on the balcony right now. If I jumped down from right above them, would they notice me falling from the sky?

That man, in the throes of passion, might be scared limp at the sight of me falling from the sky and become impotent from then on. Wendy would panic seeing my bloody, messed-up corpse at the hotel entrance, then wail in remorse.

My parents would probably forgive me after I died. They would lean on each other, gazing at my remains, and murmur words of grief.

Friends I hadn't contacted in ages would also mourn me. They'd all post "RIP, Jack" followed by a candle emoji on their social media.

I fantasized about everything that would happen after my death, satisfying myself with the imagined grief of my family and friends.

Of course I knew that imagining all this was pathetic and despicable, but I couldn't help myself because only by doing so could I feel that I was someone whom people cared about rather than a dispensable existence.

Jumping also had one other benefit: once I took that step, even if I regretted it, it would be too late. Falling from 26-stories high would mean certain death. Even if I regretted it, the regret would only last for two seconds before I hit the ground. The pain would be quick. I just had to close my eyes and it would be all over.

Yes, let's do it.

I lifted my foot and placed it on the parapet wall. Slowly shifting my weight between my feet, I gradually climbed onto it. I dared not look down. My legs felt weak, but when I imagined Wendy's expression of remorse, my trembling stopped.

I looked down and moved to the spot directly above the main entrance. There was no wind today, so my body should land right at the doorway.

Goodbye, my failed and boring life.

I closed my eyes and was about to leap off when an ill-timed phone ringtone blared.

"You evil scoundrel, I didn't tell you to kill anyone!" Lucy angrily cut me off. "All history concerning Wendy and Sandro will be altered. Do you know how much trouble that will cause us?!"If Lucy had condemned me for being inhumane, I might have felt bad, but she merely blamed me for "causing them trouble".I composed myself and said mockingly, "You said it yourself, everybody's life has a different 'weight' in this world. The combined weight of those two lives still pales in comparison to yours, right? Their lives – our lives, as ordinary people – are utterly worthless compared to yours, aren't they?"Lucy fell silent.I continued, "In the past, I never would have believed that for a few hundred thousand dollars, I could convince an innocent friend to kill someone in five minutes.""When a person's not afraid of death, you can't imagine the terrible things they're capable of," I muttered to myself."Those two probably didn't feel any pain. I injected them with propofol. Terry

"Miss, I've asked the hotel. The couple checked in this afternoon, and their room was directly above the main entrance."The balcony railing broke. They must be having sex on the balcony before they fell... Should we investigate further?" A burly man leaned in and asked.Seeing the two naked bodies, the girl visibly blushed, then waved her hand, saying, "No need. I've never heard of such a strange assassination method, so it must be an accident. We're not on home turf, so we shouldn't make a big deal out of it."Then, she turned to me and said gratefully, "Sir, I can't thank you enough. If it weren't for you, the consequences would have been unimaginable. My name is Lucy, what's yours?""Jack.""If possible, could I invite you for dinner later? I'd like to express my gratitude formally.""There's no need—""Please don't decline, Mr. Sterling," she interjected, "my upbringing doesn't allow me to slight a gentleman who has just saved my life.""In that case..." I quickly said a f

Panting heavily, I checked the time on my phone. It was 5:57 PM.I barely made it... I stood in the hotel lobby, eyes fixed on the elevator, clutching my phone tightly. When it rang again, I answered almost instantly."What are you doing?!" For the first time, the director sounded exasperated. "Do you have any idea how much money we burned just to get this call through again? Wait—where are you?""Shut up and watch." I didn't give her a chance to speak. I leaned my phone against a decorative potted plant so the camera could clearly show the hotel entrance. As soon as I set up my phone, the elevator doors chimed open, and a lavishly dressed foreign girl emerged, escorted by two female bodyguards. Her high heels clicked as she walked towards the main entrance.I quickly walked two steps ahead of them, pretending I was also leaving through the main entrance. Outside, a black car was parked, with six men in black suits standing next to it. One of them opened the car door and respectfu

"Hello, are you Wendy Ferdinand, Mr. Sandro Ferdinand's wife?""Yes."I see. So you married him. I heard the Ferdinand family is an academic powerhouse. Marrying into a scholarly family, not bad. Good for you."Hi, I'm a reporter from the City Daily newspaper. Your husband has recently achieved remarkable success in his field. Our newspaper would like to learn more about his family. Could you answer a few questions for me?""Of course."He's an associate professor at such a young age, so he must be a professor ten years later. He has a truly bright future. That's good, Wendy doesn't have to live a harsh life being his wife."Then, if I may be so bold... First, how did you and Mr. Ferdinand meet?""We met at college. I was still studying then and had no income. My husband not only supported me financially but also helped me take care of my family. I've always been very grateful to him."No, it's not him. I'm the one who sponsored your postgraduate studies, I'm the one who takes

But a nonchalant remark from the director instantly extinguished my anger. "Mr. Sterling, ten years from now, your parents are still alive. Their lives aren't easy, but they're relatively healthy."I froze for a moment, then pulled my foot back. A deep sense of powerlessness washed over me.The director maintained her indifferent tone, as if my earlier outburst had never happened. She calmly stated, "As I said, every 'time-traveling call' consumes a vast amount of manpower and resources. Given that, we certainly made extremely thorough preparations before calling you."From what we understand, you're not someone who disregards family ties. Seeing you're a bit agitated right now, let me weigh the pros and cons for you."You have three options: Option one, which we highly recommend, is to simply wait there until Miss Lucy leaves, then jump down and die."This scenario is closest to the original history, and our subsequent operations will be the least difficult. You'll get your wish

"Initially, we advised you not to jump because we feared you wouldn't believe us. Now that everything's out in the open, there's no need to hide it anymore."We hope that on the day of the event, a jumping incident still occurs. The closer the new history is to the original history, the easier it is for subsequent operations to succeed.""So, you're telling me to still jump after six o'clock?" I asked expressionlessly."That would be for the best.""Hahaha." I chuckled grimly, my mood swinging wildly. The ashes of my shattered hope were ignited by something. What was it? Was it the undisguised arrogance in the female director's voice? Having felt pathetic and insignificant for so long, I suddenly felt an emotion I hadn't felt for a long time: fury."Miss Director, I suddenly have a question." I stepped onto the parapet again. This time, my legs didn't feel weak at all.I took a deep breath and asked calmly, "Since my future is still hopeless, why should I do as you say?"The di
