Commitment Contract

After my divine grilled cheese sandwich, I returned to my place and spent a calm weekend mostly alone other then drinks with Tony for a little catch up. He made it very clear how very jealous he was of my life this past week.

I arrive back in the office on Monday morning and it takes me some time to get into a normal rhythm, just like it does after going on vacation for a week.

Cass is out for a morning meeting so he won't be in until 10:00am. I take that time to get myself arranged and catch up with the receptionist who was helping Cass in my absence.

I know when Cass gets into work because the atmosphere always becomes more tense. The sound of people chatting turns to the sound of keyboards and printers. I give myself a quick talk, reminding myself to go back to calling him Mr. Conti now that we are back in the office, strictly boss and employee again. A sense of calm comes over me when I remember our former dynamic and by the time he arrives to his office I am ready to take Monday notes like Jessica used to.

"Good, you're here," he says when I enter his office after him.

"Of course," I say, a little confused. Where else would I be on Monday morning?

"Close the door behind you, I have something to discuss," he says in his professional, clipped tone I'm used to.

I close the door and stand before his desk.

"Please. Sit," he says a little warmer. I sit in one of the comfy chairs, still confused. I've never been invited to sit in his office. Hopefully I'm not getting fired.

"I have a proposition for you," he says, then pulls out a contract and walks around his desk to hand it to me.

I look down at the document and see the words "Commitment Contract". I look up at him questioningly and ask, "What is this?"

He sits on the edge of his desk and for a moment I'm distracted by the sheer masculinity of the pose. I'm sure I've seen it in a watch or cologne ad somewhere. After a brief moment I mentally shake my head and focus in on his words.

"The other day you said something that gave me an idea. You talked about creating a marriage contract that outlined the boundaries of the relationship, remember?"

I nod, keeping my face unreadable for now until I know where this is going.

"Well, it got me thinking to the success of last week. The Losanges were thrilled with you, you were great at keeping away unwanted female attention and to top it all off, I have a meeting with Mr. Gaffan next week. You were able to get further with him in twenty minutes then I have in years," he says. He pauses but he still hasn't gotten to the point.

"Can you just come out with it. This document is like 100 pages. I'd rather not have to read it all, but it might be faster then waiting for you to explain," I plead.

He looks at me like he's trying to gauge where my head is at, then he says, "I want you to be my fake girlfriend. This contract would be for a three month term and if it worked well then we could extend it. This is just a preliminary contract, we would need to discuss the terms and how much you would need to be compensated for this to be worth your time."

My mouth is hanging open like I'm trying to catch fish. To say I'm shocked is putting it lightly.

Mr. Conti is looking at me amused and I'm sure he realizes I won't be talking anytime soon so he says, "Take some time and peruse the contract, you don't need to rush to decide. If you need the morning off that's fine as well."

"I will not be taking the morning off," I say sharply, the thought of taking more time off horrifying me. "I just basically had a week off."

"Okay then," he says, still amused but probably trying to stay on my good side. "How about we do our briefing for the week since you're here."

I nod and pull out my pad and pen, the normalcy of the task centering me.

Once he's done giving me the list of tasks for the week I leave his office and go back to my desk. I work through the easiest of the tasks in no time. This is so much easier then trying to figure out what he needs based off of what Jessica remembered from the briefing.

After an hour of work I feel calmer so, when I have a free moment, I pull out the contract he gave me and start to read. I skim the legal talk to get to the meat of the contract, the clauses detailing what would be expected of me in my role as girlfriend.

I immediately start marking up the contract with red pen and highlighters like I'm a student back at school. A big part of me can't believe I'm even reading the document because that means some part of me is considering it but another part of me knows this is inevitable.

Mr. Conti has built a multi billion dollar empire. That doesn't happen by accepting no and giving up on the things you want. No, he has a vision and he goes for it and right now his sight are set on this setup so I should take it seriously. If I'm going to accept this offer then it needs to be something I'm comfortable with.

I've never had a boyfriend or lived with a man and while this wouldn't be a real relationship, it would still be a close work relationship that could risk blurring lines. I need to know for myself what I am comfortable with, where my lines are, before I can come to the table to negotiate.

As for compensation, how do I accept this proposition without feeling a bit like an escort?

  • Don't Love Me   Tea Time

Today, I'm allowed outside the bedroom for the first time. The guards came to the room without Valentina, which, at first, had me worried. She usually hated letting them interact with me.They untied me from the bed and instructed me to wear a robe. I appreciated the little bit of modesty. A bath robe like this thin silk one, would have made me feel very bare before, but now it is like wearing a parka. Compared to the see-through, lacy lingerie, it was downright conservative. The house was richly decorated, but you could tell it hadn't been in use for years based on the dated furnishings and the dusty smell. I wondered if we were in an out-of-fashion neighbourhood. It was a shame that a house this large and beautiful was left empty when there were so many families in need of a home.I was taken down a flight of stairs to a sitting room where Valentina was enjoying a morning tea. She was dressed impeccably in a cream cashmere sweater, tucked into cream slacks. Her red hair in a perfect

She smiles demurely and says, "Oh, you know I don't get involved in that kind of thing. Best to leave it to the men. I'm happy to support you all by making sure you're fed and rested.I smile back like we're close friends again and say, "Allegra, I know you're more capable than that, and you see everything that happens in the house. Is there anyone that's been looking suspicious to you?""Cass, you know women only survive in this world if they know how to stay quiet," she says, pretending to be nervous."The door is shut, this room is soundproof and you know I can keep a secret," I say, hinting at our affair. It does the trick. She says, "Look, ever since Christmas, Constantine has been different. Not just with me, with the business as well. He's been trying to clean up the illegal aspects and distancing himself from them. Kind of like how you did in Chicago. I don't know why the sudden shift, but there are a lot of people who don't want the illegal side of things to end. That's where

  • Don't Love Me   Digging for Leads

I swipe my hand across the table, knocking a crystal vase onto the ground. The sound of it shattering gives me a momentary feeling of relief before the agony rises to the surface again."That's not good enough!" I yell, and I can see that Constantine is trying to be patient with me. He normally doesn't tolerate being treated like this and my tantrums have been incrementally increasing over the past two weeks without Alexa.I'm in hell knowing that she's with Valentina. She was finally starting to get over what happened the first time and now she's right back there, only this time we can't find her."Calm down," Constantine says, waving off the guards in the room. I know he's struggling with the guilt of her being taken from his own house, he'd even let it go when I punched him a couple of times."It's been two weeks, and we don't have a clue where she is!" I rage."We know she's no longer in the city of New York, which means she's probably being hidden in the suburbs somewhere in New

  • Don't Love Me   Focused on the Positives

Valentina came back early that day and watched a movie with me. She sat behind me with me between her legs and held me in her arms. It was an intimate position that felt extra vulnerable because I couldn't see her. She would periodically caress my hair or arm and it would give me shivers. Not the good kind. For the next week, the days pass slowly in a similar pattern. Valentina bathes me and stays with me for breakfast and joins me later in the day for a movie and then dinner. During meals, I try to keep the conversation fun so that she lets her guard down with me.Mostly, I keep learning of the horrors of her upbringing. She talked about each of her brothers and their particular tastes in the bedroom. I was absolutely horrified. If I made it out of this alive, I wouldn't even want her punished. I would want her to live comfortably in a good psychiatric facility where she could get help and some peace.I felt we had spent long enough establishing a routine that, during dinner one even

  • Don't Love Me   On a Mission

Breakfast is waiting for us at the table and I'm a little unnerved that I didn't hear anyone come in during my bath. It leaves me feeling exposed. We go to the same places as yesterday and we both have the same dish of one poached egg and avocado in front of us. After sharing two meals with Valentina, I'm starting to wonder if she maybe has an eating disorder, because this definitely isn't enough food for one full meal.I'm already starving from only eating a salad yesterday, so I decide I need to invoke Cass's name in the hopes of getting more food."Could I possibly get some toast with breakfast?" I ask. Trying to ask nicely first."I don't eat carbs," she responds, like it's the most reasonable response."Cass and I eat carbs every morning, it's good for brain activity," I explain. She looks up at me suspiciously, then asks, "And you let him decide what you eat? That seems a little controlling. I'll have to talk to him about it."I hold back my laughter at the irony of the situatio

  • Don't Love Me   The Name of the Game

I eventually fell into a fitful sleep. For hours, I had nightmare after nightmare until I was finally exhausted enough to fall into a deep dreamless sleep.I wake up to a gentle stroking of my hair and I know it's Valentina. I try to keep my breathing steady so I can pretend I'm still sleeping. I'm hoping she just wants to watch me sleep and that she'll get bored and leave soon enough. However, after what feels like forever, I finally pretend to wake up.I open my eyes to see her leaning over me. I wonder briefly if this is going to be in my next nightmare. She smiles such a loving smile that you would never know she was crazy."Good morning, sweetheart," she says.I can't bring myself to respond, so I just smile. Her eyes light up at my response, thankfully telling me it's enough."I thought you might want to clean up a bit today," she says thoughtfully. "I've run a bath for you, and I'll help you wash."I don't relish the thought of having her present while I wash, but it's been a c
