MARCUS' POV
I was in the kitchen making dinner when Dylan breezed in saying nothing. He just walked past me like I didn't exist. I broke the silence first.
"And hello to you too, son. How was your day? Did classes go well?" I said, flipping the steak in the pan. He still didn't say anything.
The steak in the pan hissed, having been abandoned for too long. I dished up my dinner, leaving his portion in the pan for whenever he felt like eating.
"Ungrateful shit," I stabbed a piece of the meat and chewed. The fact that my son couldn't see that all of this was for him? This legacy, my sweat. I could be retired. I had enough money to buy a yacht, hire workers, and tour the world.
Instead, here I was building something I didn't have for him. He didn't see it that way though, as he had let me know numerous times. I even made him fucking captain of the team, but that just pissed him off more.
I sighed. Tomorrow was a heavy practice day. I couldn't focus on Dylan as much as I wanted to. I had Seraphina, the brightest girl I had ever seen, to look after. I already knew she would be the only chance Blackwood University had at winning the League of Legends National championship coming up. We had barely a month to practice, but I could tell she was already ready for it.
After Dylan's mom left us, my son acted out even more. Sometimes, I wished she had taken him. "Oh, no Marcus," she had said, flashing her big diamond ring in my face, "we wouldn't want him to change locations so quickly. I'm going to Spain right now. It's best if he stays with you."
I agreed and took my son in. It wasn't my fault I was committed and dedicated to this, gaming was what made me who I was. Winning the league was my childhood dream. Since I didn't win it, I could coach someone well enough that they did.
Even if it wasn't my son.
Luckily for me, Dylan was interested in it too. Not as dedicated as I wished he was, just enough to be in the ranks.
Morning came quicker than I expected. I walked to our game house, expecting to see all my players there bright and early.
Dylan was already there, along with Louise and Mika. A few other people stood in the corners of the room, coffee cups in their hands, whining about the cold. If I had to be up early, they had to be up early too. Damn the cold.
"Hi, guys," I greeted them. I scanned the room quickly, taking note of everyone's faces. "Let's get to business then," dragging out the schedule of players I had already mapped out.
"Seraphina?" I called. No response came back. "Sera?" I said again for good measure.
Sera was a good student, she never skipped any of her obligations. "Where is Seraphina?"
Louise shruggef. "I tried calling her all night. It went to voicemail."
That was strange.
I turned to Dylan. "Dylan," I said calmly. "Do you know where your girlfriend is?" I asked him.
Dylan chewed his lips, his brown eyes staring above my head. "Nah, I don't."
I sighed. "In my office, Dylan."
It had always been so easy to catch my son in a lie. I walked inside my small office, certain he would respect me enough in front of the team to follow me here.
He came in behind me, shutting the door. His lips bent in a hard frown, like he's irritated. I called him inside here.
I sat down, facing him.
"Dylan," I began.
"Pops, I already said I didn't know where she was. I'm not her caregiver," he yelled at me.
"First of all," I said, my voice hard. "I am your coach. You speak to me with respect."
Dylan hung his head, anger brewing beneath his surface. "Sorry, Coach. I still don't know where she is."
I leaned back.
"Well, you're so defensive, I'm sure you have a good idea why she isn't here. Do you mind sharing with me?"
Dylan glared at me. "No."
"I'm not giving you a fucking choice," I slammed the table. "Either you tell me, or I'm kicking you off the team. I'm certain you did something to her."
"Fine. She caught me sleeping with Mika," he said, squaring his shoulders at me.
What a disappointment.
"You slept with her best friend?" I asked him.
"Well, you always keep her busy," he pointed out. "I had to let out steam somehow."
This boy.
"Get out, Dylan," I said. His eyes widened in surprise.
"You better hope I can fix this. If not, you wouldn't like the consequences," I said.
Dylan scoffed. "Fuck you, old man." He opened the door to the office, slamming it behind him.
Dylan had to be dealt with later. Now?
I had to find my star player.
CHAPTER FIFTY ONESera’s POV I ran into the waiting cab, tears stinging in the back of my eyes. “Hello Coach,” I said into my phone. “Just checking to see if you saw my calls. Funniest thing ever, the host told me something that I find hard to believe. Can you call me please, bye.”I ended the voicemail. “To the lecturer's quarters,” I told the cab man, settling back against the seat. I was so confused and my mind was a mess. I opened my phone and sent a text quickly to Romeo. “Hey, are you attending the Mayor's Tournament?”He replied quickly. “Yeah, Coach got us all tickets. Have you taken yours?”This bitch. Just when I thought she was being genuine. “Not yet.”Romeo typed and stopped, then the bubbles appeared again. “Maybe it is a mistake. You know, she kinda forgets stuff a lot.”Oh, I was sure of it. How convenient to always forget Sera, yet she acted so humble this morning.“Are you coming?”“No,” I texted back. “Need to think.”Romeo sent me a thumbs up and I put my phone o
CHAPTER FIFTYSeraphina's POVAgatha forgot to inform me the match was today.“What the fuck?” I groaned. Romeo came to my side, an extra large cup of coffee in his hands and I clutched it greedily, slurping down the sweet caramel drink. “What the fuck?” I repeated.“Yeah, crazy yeah?”There were a host of reporters in our training center, with large vans and their equipment. No wonder Agatha parked at the back of the building, she probably knew I would have fled. The culprit easily separated herself from me, to go talk to some other coaches.“Who are we up against?” I asked, drinking from the cup again. “Some prep school. They are Chinese and they won the nationals three years ago.”Fuck me.“Okay.”“Seraphina,” Agatha called for me. I smiled as I approached her, looking at the men she was flanked by. “This is our star, and she will be representing our team today.”“Wonderful,” the Chinese man said, stretching his hand out for me. I took it, still curious about Agatha’s play. “We're
CHAPTER FORTY-NINESeraphina’s POV“Fuck,” I groaned, rolling in bed. What time was it? I opened one eye and looked around for my phone, searching through the sheets. I grabbed it and put it on. “9 am?” I needed more sleep, I felt like I had been run over by a truck.I tugged the blanket over my head, I looked at the phone. The e-mail I got from Coach Agnes stared at me, but I swiped it away. This was the weekend, anything she wanted with me could wait till Monday.Right now, I need caffeine.I took a quick shower and wrapped my towel around my waist. The apartment was so much quieter now, ever since Mika left. Sometimes, I missed her, but knowing that her bubbly personality was just a mask helped me get over those feelings quickly. My eyes fell on Jennifer's library card. “Ive git to return this,” I muttered,” changing into a pair of jeans and a tank top. It looked sunny outside, so, I did not bother grabbing a jacket, instead, wearing a pair of dicks and uggs Dylan had gotten me fo
CHAPTER FORTY EIGHTSera’s POVMarcus placed the last tray back in the box. “...and we're done,” he said, closing it up.“Wow,” I stared at the big mason jar. “I didn't realize bees made this much honey.”“Mmmh,” he replied. “Okay, time for the next thing on my apology to you,” he grinned. “Oh, this was all a plan?”“Yeah, I have so much to make up for. This is just the start.” He said it so surely, my tummy did flip backs. “Geez,” I said.Marcus set the kader back down into the attic. “Ma’am,” he bowed slightly.“Please, you just want to start at my ass again,” I replied, holding the jar close to me as I passed him. “Well,” he said, “I can be a gentleman and still want to stare at you.”I climbed down quickly and waited for him in his attic. “So, you're not gonna tell me what's next? Or do I have to beg.”He opened the door to his room. “Up next, is waffles.”My tummy chose that point to grumble at the mention of food. “Sorry,” I apologized, my face hot. “I did not eat breakfast.”M
CHAPTER FORTY-SEVENSera’s POVMorning couldn't come quickly enough. I needed that extra credit so badly I woke up early for my morning jog, and I was the first in class.During recess, I walked briskly to Professor Curtis's office. “Professor,” I called, knocking on the wooden door.“Come in.” His head was buried in some books as I walked in. He lifted his head slightly. “Ah, Seraphina,” he breathed. “Do you have something for me?”“As a matter of fact, I do. The student supplying drugs to Carly is a boy called Danny,” I informed him, not bothering to sit down.“You found that out pretty quickly,” Professor Curtis said.“I had motivation,” I shrugged. “Should I write down his room number?”“Yes please,” he pushed a notepad close. “Thank you so much for your efficiency, Miss. Kane.”“So,” I straightened. “Do I get the extra credit now?”He smiled briefly. “Yes, I always keep my promises. However, you are a bright student, Miss Kane. Let's put in a bit more effort into our school work,
CHAPTER FORTY-SIX Sera’s POVThe next days are slow, as I focused on attending classes and gaming. Luckily for me, Agatha is missing from all our trainings, so I actually had fun with my teammates. Campus settled beautifully into the fall and Christmas was already around the corner.Soon, exams would start and I was already feeling like I had gotten back on my academics at a nice pace. Jennifer still blew up my phone about what I approached her for, but ignoring her was easier this time. I had to find another way to get the money for Marcus, but first, I needed that extra credit. After a rough day of school, I walked down the lobby leading to the cafeteria, when something caught my eye. “Hmmm,” I whispered, stopping in front of the flyer. “What is this?”I tore it off and brought it closer to my face. “Special study groups,” I read, skimming through the words. “Only at night, in the renovated library.”“Well that's suspicious,” I said to myself. The renivated library was not open to
