PRESENT DAY

______________

-NINA-

"You should join me for a yoga class in the park sometime," said Sienna as soon as I arrived in front of her building. It's a warm Sunday morning, and we've arranged to run together. She is my only friend to keep me company at this type of event, since Michelle avoids doing sports like the plague, and Harper is constantly busy. Even sleeping on her living room couch, I’ve barely seen her lately. Her schedule is very busy, with a lot of meetings happening during the weekends.

Since coming back from Italy, it's the first time I'll be spending time alone with Sienna, and I've been looking forward to it.

"I´ll pass. Yoga is just too slow for me. " I need something to boost my blood flow." I always feel more alive after a good run. It helps me organize my thoughts. Back in high school, I was on the track team. Even if my time was not great, the coach kept me on the team just because of my commitment.

"Sometimes, people achieve that through meditation," she

-NINA- After resting for one week, I had enough of staying at home. Despite the doctor's advice to take another week off, I chose to return to work, before I died of boredom. Since new employees are not allowed to work from home because of corporate rules, I had to go to the office. I need to call Chris later, but I keep putting it off because I'm unsure how to begin. Despite that, he was incredibly kind to me after the accident, ensuring I was alright and covering all the medical bills, although I insisted on paying. He sent the company car to take me home the next day. Maybe he's not as much of a jerk as I thought. Maybe I should put our past behind and try to be friends with him. Just friends, nothing more. I'll have to send him a basket of wine and cheese. Italian wine, of course. I arrived at my desk in Triad with the help of a very nice Uber driver and was greeted by Kirsten, my superior. "Hello, Nina. It's nice to have you back. We were no

-CHRIS- I have the same routine every day. I wake up at five, go for a run, hit my home gym for an hour, have a black coffee and go to work. Today, for no apparent reason, I woke up late. That's why I was running through the park at 8 in the morning, almost three hours after my usual run. Suddenly, as if my brain had conjured it, I heard someone shouting a name I know very well. "NINA!" At the front of the trail, a commotion was beginning to form. A few people were gathering around a body lying on the ground, and my body went cold. Nina was lying on her side, her clothes torn, her body contorted at a strange angle. A couple with a barking dog and a blonde woman were leaning over her. In a blink, I pushed everyone aside. "Back off, people. Let her breath." I moved her hair away from her face. There were scratches all over her body and a cut above her eyebrow, and she was bleeding. "Nina, can you hear me?" "Mnnn" she let out a whimper and her eyes opened. Her face

THIRTEEN YEARS AGO_______________________-CHRIS-"If this triangle is acute, what is the sin of A?" Nina pointed with her pencil at my notebook, a lock of her dark, wavy hair falling over her forehead. My hand was itching to reach for it and tuck it behind her ear. She turned her gaze from the page to face me, those gorgeous forest-green eyes filled with expectation. For about a month now, she's been tutoring me after school. We've been meeting a few days a week at her house, whenever we both have free time. Some days we study in the living room, others, like today, in the kitchen. Never in her bedroom, as her strict father made it clear from my first visit.I love their kitchen. It is the heart of the house with wooden cabinets and deep green tiles on the backsplash wall. In the middle, there is an island where Nina's mother makes pasta with a long, thin rolling pin. A large window overlooking the vineyards floods the space with light. Their whole house is cozy and full of life, th

-NINA-"Tesoro, ero in pensiero!" My mother's loud voice came through the cell phone speaker."Mamma! There's nothing to be worried about," I sighed heavily, looking at her delicate features. My mom has fair skin, delicate bone structure and chestnut hair. Even in her late fifties, she is still a beautiful woman, with the grace of a movie star from the fifties.I inherited part of her refined features, but I look more like my father, with my dark brown hair and slightly darker skin. However, my eyes aren't brown like his, but a dark shade of green."But we haven't spoken for nearly a week!" With the look of shock on her face, you'd have thought I'd disappeared for a whole year."That is not true. We've been texting every day. I just couldn't call you sooner because of the time difference." Italy is 6 hours ahead of New York, making it difficult to find time for a proper telephone call."It's not the same when I can't see your face. I was feeling uneasy about you living in New York. It

-NINA-Chris was talking with a bald older man in a brown suit with a white mustache when I approached them near the elevators."Can I speak with you for a second, Mr. Hayworth," I corrected myself for my earlier mistake. It's better that our connection stays private.Their heads turned to look at me. "Of course. We'll continue this conversation later, Mendelson. Call my assistant to schedule a meeting," he addressed the bald man, who I think tried to smile behind the thick mustache, before getting into the elevator. After Chris and I were alone, he started to talk to me again."We're on a last name basis now, Ms. Benedetti?" his tone was playful, his hands inside his pockets.I lifted my chin to him, straightening my spine. Even with high heels, he was still at least a foot taller than me. "I'd prefer it if people didn't realize we knew each other."“I can be quiet. It’s you who tend to scream when I’m around.” he gave me a cheeky smile. My blood started to boil. The audacity of this
