Chapter 3

Gogo Coco
First thing in the morning, the Hallowells got ready to pick up last-minute travel supplies.

Just as I passed by, Trish called out to me.

“Anna, get changed. You’re coming with us to the mall. We can buy you some things you like.”

My mind went blank.

Trish wanted to take me out and buy me things.

My heart skipped several beats at the thought.

In all my eighteen years, Trish had never once taken me anywhere, much less offered to spend money on me.

During the ride to the mall, I looked out of the window with a mix of emotions.

Did it hit Trish that she had neglected her youngest pup and wanted to make up for lost time?

Once at the mall, Kayson and Kaylee excitedly shuttled Trish and Brandon from one store after another.

We entered a clothing store where the sales associate clearly knew Trish and Brandon very well.

With a polished smile, the sales associate approached us briskly.

“Ma’am, back with the pups to get new clothes?”

The sales associate spotted me from the corner of her eye, and her smile faltered.

“And this is? One of your pack servants? I’ve never seen her before.”

Trish glanced back at me.

In my faded T-shirt and worn-out clothes, I looked completely out of place beside my well-dressed family.

She turned away indifferently, not even correcting the sales associate.

I gripped the hem of my shirt, a dull ache tightening in my chest.

Trish was ashamed to admit that I was her pup.

Kaylee chose two new hunting outfits, while Kayson picked out two sets of new armor.

Trish beamed, praising their aesthetics.

She instructed the sales associate to wrap everything up. Struck by a thought, she turned to me tenderly.

“Anna, go pick something out. A she-wolf should always make an effort to dress up a little.”

Drawing a deep breath, I swallowed down the grief and selected a silver cloak.

The cold in the Northern Territories was brutal, so I needed a cloak to shield myself from the elements.

I had just held the cloak up when Kaylee dragged Trish off to another part of the store to check out the shoes.

Feeling awkward, I stood there and put the cloak back.

At the checkout, Kayson and Kaylee had their arms full of new gear. I, on the other hand, had only bought a cheap pair of gloves.

The sales associate rang up the mountain of purchases and handed us the bill.

“That will be eight thousand dollars.”

Trish nodded and shoved me toward the register.

“Pay the bill, Anna.”

I looked at her in disbelief.

“Why?”

Trish furrowed her brows, her tone assertive.

“You earn plenty of money working part-time. What’s the problem with spending a bit on your own family?”

As color drained from my face, I shakily took a step back.

So this was the real reason why she brought me along.

She wasn’t trying to get me some clothes. Her eyes were set on my money.

Blinking back the tears, I yelled out my refusal.

“No! The money is to cover my living expenses for the rest of the year!”

Without lifting a finger, Kayson and Kaylee always had plenty of money in their bank accounts.

I had to slave away at part-time jobs just to scrape together my tuition and living costs.

If I were to lose the money, my life up in the Northern Territories would be impossible.

Faced with my defiance, Trish turned flushed with rage.

“We provide a roof over your head, food, and clothes. What other expenses do you need to cover? You bought something today, didn’t you? We’re only asking you to pay the bill. Why are you being this difficult?”

The werewolves in line to be rung up threw us judgmental looks.

Caught in the heat of the moment, I raised my voice.

“I picked out a fifteen-dollar pair of gloves, but they got stuff worth thousands.

“I have no obligation to pay for your extravagance.”

Kaylee’s closet was too packed to fit anything else, while Kayson collected exclusively limited-release sneakers.

Yet, Trish and Brandon never spent a single dime on me.

Meanwhile, I was stuck with the worn-out rags, living on next to nothing.

Trish was taken aback by my out-of-character public defiance.

Flying into a rage, she struck me across the face.

Half my face went numb, and I hit the floor hard.

While I was too dazed to pick myself up from the floor, Brandon approached with a grimace and reached into my pocket to retrieve my bank card.

He ran the card through the terminal. With a beep, the payment was successful.

I looked up, despair crushing the air from my lungs.

In that moment, everything became clear.

To them, family was nothing but an excuse to exploit me. I was done with this family.

Trish cried the whole way home, while Brandon’s brows were locked in a knot the whole time. The house remained foul and filthy, untouched and unattended when the Hallowells stepped through the front door. My decision to leave hit Trish hard, leaving her emotionally and physically drained. She rubbed her temples in agony and said to the twins, “Kaylee, go and wash the moldy dishes. “Kayson, make yourself useful and dump the rotting garbage.” Kaylee wasn’t having it. “Why should I wash the dishes? The mold is so disgusting! This is so unfair!” Kayson voiced his objections out loud as well. “Why should I take out the trash? It’s filled with Kaylee’s gross tissues! She should be the one to do it!” The pair’s screaming match grew intense as they hurled nasty insults at each other. Faced with yet another bitter feud, Trish and Brandon could feel their heads throbbing. Before, every time the twins started getting into it, I would quietly emerge from the shadows, take the

My disappearance terrified Trish. With shaking hands, she tried my number, but no one answered. It was as if I had disappeared from the face of the earth, erased entirely from their world. Trish was on the verge of tears from anxiety, her voice dripping with panic. “Is she really gone? But she doesn’t have any money. Where could she be?” Brandon paced around the room frantically. Eventually, he put on a brave face. “Don’t panic. She must be hiding at a friend’s place. We should reach out to her friends.” Trish unlocked her phone in a fluster and scrolled through hundreds of contacts. Ten minutes went by, and nothing concrete came up. Trish looked up in a daze. “I-I don’t know any of her friends.” Scowling, Brandon shouted, “You’re her mother, and you don’t even know who she hangs out with?” Feeling the sting of his words, Trish snapped back. “Why are you yelling at me? What? Do you know any of her friends? All you care about is Kaylee and Kayson’s training. It’

In the days after, I poured all my energy into my role as a healer in the Northern Territories. Armed with herbal expertise and antidotes, I treated and saved dozens of werewolves in just days.Initial doubt among the staff at the Healing Temple quickly gave way to unwavering reverence and respect.I was becoming stronger day by day, through my own efforts.Meanwhile, my phone blew up with notifications from the Hallowells. Trish and Brandon kept sharing photos of the twins on social media. Kaylee sipped on champagne on a yacht, while Kayson scaled cliffs in the woods. Trish and Brandon made it a point to add captions. “The pride and joy of our family—our wonderful twins.” This was their go-to strategy to bait my jealousy and push me to admit my mistakes. I didn’t care the slightest, though. In fact, it was just the most absurd thing.Trish was the first to break in the face of my silence. She posted a long message, loaded with accusations against me. “Enough is e

By early morning, the Hallowells were ready to set out. While passing my bedroom, Trish peered inside. The room was hauntingly empty, devoid of any trace of life. With rage surging within her, Trish sent me a lengthy text. Her words dripped with entitlement, carrying commanding and threatening undertones. “Anna, grow up for once. We don’t have time for your little mind games. You walked out without finishing your chores. Do you have any respect for this family? “Get back here and mop the floor and do Kayson and Kaylee’s laundry. If the house isn’t spick and span by the time we get back next week, you are no longer welcome in the house.” Once the text went through, Trish emerged with a smile. She took it for granted that her instruction was enough to make me fall back in line. Too bad that she was about to be disappointed. Before the Hallowells could even commence the drive to the airport, Kayson and Kaylee were already at each other’s throats over the trunk space.

Startled, Trish, Brandon, and Kayson scrambled up the stairs. The moment my bedroom door was slammed open, they stood there dumbfounded. The room was empty. The wardrobe had been cleared out, and even the bed had been stripped down to its frame. Trish froze, her eyes wide. “W-What’s going on? Did she pack up and leave?” Snapping back to reality, Kaylee ripped the curtains back. Through the pouring rain outside the window, I loaded my bags into a taxi and headed for the airport. Kaylee pointed out the window and shouted, “I see her! Anna’s got into a cab!” Kayson leaned in to look and snickered. “I don’t know what she thinks she’s doing. We spent all her money, and she thinks she can just run away?” Trish turned ashen. “Since that’s what she wants, she can leave for all I care! I’d like to see how long she lasts out there in the real world on her own.” As blood rushed to her head, Trish kicked the door hard. “We were nice enough to bring her along to the mall.

While I scrambled my way back to my feet, everyone else swarmed Trish to offer comfort. Trish sank into Brandon’s arms, her teary eyes reflecting all the hurt in the world. Gripped by fury, Kaylee was eager to defend Trish’s honor. She rolled her eyes at me. “Get over yourself, Anna! It was just paying the bill, not some highway robbery. You’re so selfish. No wonder Mom and Dad can’t stand you.” Kayson scoffed. “You’re supposed to be part of the family, but I guess it means nothing to you. What’s the point of raising you?” Brandon dumped my bank card at my feet, his eyes reflecting disgust. “Stop embarrassing yourself. Get lost!” Raising my chin, I stared at the family of four. They had drained my bank account, and somehow, I was blamed for everything. I hadn’t done a single thing. For eighteen years, Trish and Brandon sent me away to a foster family. They went on trips without me. Since Trish and Brandon were obsessed with fairness, I assumed that by playing
