Chapter 2

Autor: Candy Sweetie
I looked up, and Adrian was standing outside the door.

He frowned impatiently, but when he saw the tear tracks still on my cheeks, his expression finally became more serious. "Lily, stop it. It's just a bracelet. I'll take you to get you another one, okay?"

With that, he grabbed my arm and strode outside.

After tossing me into the back seat, he gently helped Nora into the front passenger seat.

I rubbed my wrist, already red from his grip, and fought desperately to keep my tears from falling.

When we reached the first floor of the mall, Nora said she wanted to look at a new pair of shoes.

Adrian nodded and stayed protectively by her side, while I followed behind them alone, still like a shadow no one noticed.

"Let's go with Nora to look at shoes first. Lily can wait."

Just as I expected. This happened every time we went shopping. Without fail.

Adrian stayed with Nora for a long time as she tried on shoes at the boutique. She couldn't decide between two pairs.

"Adrian, which pair looks better on me?"

Adrian affectionately ran a hand through her hair. "Buy both. Pick one to wear for now. Lily doesn't have anything that goes with either pair anyway. Give her the other one, and if you want to wear it later, you can switch with her."

He paid for both pairs and handed me the one I would never wear.

I looked at the shoes, which weren't even my size, and found the whole thing absurd. So this was what he meant by letting me choose. It was nothing more than an excuse to shut me up.

"Adrian, I don't need these shoes." I took a deep breath.

'I don't need you anymore, either.'

Adrian's hand was still hanging in the air when it froze. "Lily, Nora has much better taste than you do. Stop making a scene here. How does the way you're acting now look anything like a proper Luna?"

His face darkened as he finished speaking. He shielded Nora and strode out of the mall. He never looked back, leaving me there alone, holding a pair of shoes that didn't fit.

Ever since we were little, everyone had preferred Nora—our parents, our teachers, even Adrian. And yet I still loved him.

All because once, when my father had called me stupid, weak, and nothing like their child, Adrian had given me a piece of chocolate.

He'd told me it was okay. Even if I was a little dumb, he'd protect me from then on.

So when he chose me as his mate, I thought my fantasy had finally come true. I would be the Cinderella in the story, waiting for her prince to finally come.

For him, I gave up the herbal medicine I loved and tried to become a healer. I learned how to help him handle the pack's affairs.

But in the end, I could never become Nora, and Adrian would never love me.

I took a deep breath and turned toward the herbs section of the mall.

Maybe to Adrian, I would always be the one who wasn't chosen, but without them blocking my way, I could finally breathe the air of freedom.

However, the moment I stepped through the villa's front door, a shrill voice made my head ring.

"Lily, what the hell is going through that stupid head of yours?" My mother, Caroline Rose, snatched the herbs I'd just bought to make healing potions and hurled them onto the floor. "Look at yourself! What makes you think you're worthy of Adrian?"

My father, Daniel Rose, stood nearby, his low voice filled with restrained fury. "If Adrian hadn't taken you as his mate because of Nora, why would he ever choose a useless she-wolf like you? How dare you treat him and Nora like this?"

Maybe before tonight, I would have obeyed them and gone to Adrian to beg him not to be angry with me.

But now, I simply looked at them. I didn't want to say anything anymore.

The next morning, I had just opened the door to my shop when I saw Adrian standing outside with a bouquet of red roses. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up. He stepped forward and reached for my hand.I took a step back, and his hand froze in midair."Lily." There was a hint of hurt in his voice. "I know I was wrong. All this time, I thought you'd always be there behind me, and I ignored how you felt. Come back with me. I'll give you another bonding ceremony. It'll be just you."I looked into his sincere eyes and suddenly asked, "Adrian, do you know what my favorite color is?"He opened his mouth, but couldn't answer."It's not red," I said. "Then do you know what my favorite flower is?"Adrian's hand stopped. Embarrassed, he moved the bouquet of roses behind his back. "I'm sorry. From now on...""Adrian, there is no 'from now on.'" I looked at him and spoke slowly, one word at a time. "Do you even know that I'm allergic to cherries? Do you know why I gave up making potions?"

I picked up the packet and suddenly noticed a note underneath it."I went looking for these especially for you. You deserve the best."I hesitated for a long time, but eventually, I planted the seeds in a flowerpot. Two months later, one afternoon, the doorbell suddenly rang."Hello, how can I help..." I looked up, and my voice caught in my throat. It was Adrian. He had lost a lot of weight. His cheekbones were more pronounced, and dark stubble had started to shadow his jaw.My parents and Nora were right behind him."Lily." Adrian stepped forward. "We're here to take you home."I set down the herbs in my hands and looked at them calmly. "My home is here."He opened his mouth as if trying to find the right words, then said hoarsely, "You don't want me anymore? And you don't want your parents either?"I looked at him, then at my parents standing behind him, and suddenly found it all ridiculous. "Adrian, you're the ones who've never wanted me."Mom frowned. "Lily, what are you

The moment Nora said those words, the hall fell so silent that not even a breath could be heard outside the doors.Adrian stared at Nora in disbelief, saying nothing for a long moment.Thinking he was hesitating, Nora stepped closer. "Adrian, the guests inside are still waiting. The ceremony can't happen without a mate...""I don't want to." Adrian's voice was almost a sigh. But those words made Nora's smile instantly freeze."Lily is my mate," he said, looking at Nora seriously. "Not you."Nora's voice turned sharp with disbelief, like a knife driven straight into Adrian's chest. "That's impossible! You clearly... you clearly never cared about her! Every time, you let her take whatever gifts were left after I chose! You... you've always chosen me, ever since we were kids!""That's because she was always so quiet, never fighting for anything and never asking for more." Adrian closed his eyes. "I thought she didn't care... I kept taking her patience and restraint for granted, ove

He suppressed the panic rising inside him and strode to the dressing room, pushing the door open. There was no one inside. He pulled out his phone and called my number. It was turned off.He called again. Still off.Holding his phone, his expression finally shifted from confusion to a bewilderment he'd never felt before. He didn't understand how I, the unassuming girl who had always willingly followed behind him, could suddenly want to leave.Dad stood in the hall, his face dark and his eyes filled with suppressed anger. "Lily has never been as good as Nora, not since she was little. I always thought she was an obedient child. I never expected her to make all of us worry about her at a time like this!"Mom frowned as well and chimed in, "It's bad enough that she isn't very bright. Now she doesn't even care about her own bonding ceremony. Just wait until she comes back. We'll see how she gets herself out of this mess!"This time, Adrian didn't try to smooth things over. He had a

Just like every year, there was only one birthday cake. This year's cake was also chosen by Adrian: Black Forest cake. It was Nora's favorite, but I was allergic to cherries.I sat at the table, watching Adrian put a birthday hat on Nora.I watched the delighted look on her face as she accepted her present.I watched the smiles on everyone's faces as the whole family sang "Happy Birthday" to her. What a happy family. Too bad there was no place for me here. Then a slice of cake was set down in front of me.I looked at Adrian as he arranged the forks, then stood up and said softly, "No, thank you. I'm allergic to cherries."Adrian frowned, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes. "Come on, sit down. Don't be difficult right now. I'll make it up to you next time."I nodded and obediently sat back down. "Okay."There wouldn't be a next time.I sat in my seat, quietly watching them enjoy the cake together. Was I really not good enough to deserve love?A delighted scream pulled

"Don't say that. Lily is just a little tired tonight. I'll take her to buy the perfume she likes. I'll cheer her up later."But Adrian had forgotten. Nora was the one who liked perfume, not me.The moment my mother faced Adrian, she put on a fawning smile. "Look how good Adrian is to you. How can you be so ungrateful? The bonding ceremony is in three days. Behave yourself!"Of course. Being chosen as the mate of Adrian, the Alpha of the pack, was apparently the greatest blessing my Gamma father could ever receive.Yet no one had ever asked whether I wanted it.I closed my eyes. "Fine."Everyone in the hall breathed a sigh of relief, as if a derailed train had finally been put back on the tracks. The next morning, Adrian came to pick me up to try on the formalwear we'd had tailor-made.Nora slipped her arm through mine affectionately. "Lily, I'm going to help you pick something out. You don't mind, right, sis?"I looked at her feigned affection and answered evenly, "Mm."Ever
