Chapter 4

작가: Candy Sweetie
Just like every year, there was only one birthday cake.

This year's cake was also chosen by Adrian: Black Forest cake. It was Nora's favorite, but I was allergic to cherries.

I sat at the table, watching Adrian put a birthday hat on Nora.

I watched the delighted look on her face as she accepted her present.

I watched the smiles on everyone's faces as the whole family sang "Happy Birthday" to her.

What a happy family. Too bad there was no place for me here.

Then a slice of cake was set down in front of me.

I looked at Adrian as he arranged the forks, then stood up and said softly, "No, thank you. I'm allergic to cherries."

Adrian frowned, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes. "Come on, sit down. Don't be difficult right now. I'll make it up to you next time."

I nodded and obediently sat back down. "Okay."

There wouldn't be a next time.

I sat in my seat, quietly watching them enjoy the cake together.

Was I really not good enough to deserve love?

A delighted scream pulled me back to reality.

"Oh my God! I'm going to become the pack's healer!" Nora held up her phone excitedly, her eyes welled up with tears. She was hugging our parents.

Beside them, Adrian happily applauded for her.

Then I heard Nora complain in a playful voice, "But my promotion ceremony is tomorrow too. At the most important moment of my life, I'll be all alone. That's such a shame."

The hall fell silent for a second. When everyone looked up again, every pair of eyes was fixed on me.

"Lily." Adrian's voice came beside my ear, coaxing as he tried to reason with me. "Nora's promotion ceremony is something that only happens once in a lifetime. Could we push our bonding ceremony back a little? We could hold it at midnight. The moon will be at its fullest and brightest then."

I couldn't help finding it ridiculous.

Was I supposed to believe a bonding ceremony could happen more than once?

Adrian didn't wait for my answer before speaking again, this time with a hint of displeasure. "Lily, you've always been the most understanding one..."

So what?

Because I was understanding, I was supposed to keep standing behind him and be his backup choice?

"Okay. Move it to midnight."

It didn't matter when they held this bonding ceremony without its real bride.

Back in the little room at the end of the hallway, I thought for a moment before putting my leather-bound journal into my bag. It held every disappointment I'd experienced, over and over, throughout my life.

And now, I'd finally had enough.

They were still celebrating in the hall, their laughter coming one wave after another. None of it had anything to do with me.

Early the next morning, the whole house was bustling, but not for me.

Everyone was busy preparing for Nora's promotion ceremony—choosing clothes, preparing speeches, discussing the celebration banquet.

I, meanwhile, put on my usual boring black clothes, picked up a tiny bag, and walked out of my room. "I'm not going to the promotion ceremony. I need to get ready for tonight's bonding ceremony."

For the first time, Mom looked pleased as she straightened my collar. "Go ahead. We'll all come tonight to take part in the ceremony."

"Mm."

Adrian reached out, intending to touch my cheek the way he always did.

I stepped aside. "I'm leaving."

Adrian withdrew his hand in surprise. For some reason, he suddenly had the feeling that something had quietly slipped out of his control without his knowing.

He pulled himself together and forced a smile. "Make sure you take good care of the guests for me."

I didn't answer. I picked up my little black bag and turned toward the door.

As the plane taxied along the runway, I watched the scenery slide past outside the window and took a deep breath.

From this moment on, I was finally free.

At the exact moment I landed, Nora's promotion ceremony finally came to an end. They rushed to the site of the bonding ceremony, only to find the place in complete chaos.

The elder in charge of the ceremony grabbed Adrian with a displeased look. "Alpha, where is your Luna? We've been trying to reach her!"

The next morning, I had just opened the door to my shop when I saw Adrian standing outside with a bouquet of red roses. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up. He stepped forward and reached for my hand.I took a step back, and his hand froze in midair."Lily." There was a hint of hurt in his voice. "I know I was wrong. All this time, I thought you'd always be there behind me, and I ignored how you felt. Come back with me. I'll give you another bonding ceremony. It'll be just you."I looked into his sincere eyes and suddenly asked, "Adrian, do you know what my favorite color is?"He opened his mouth, but couldn't answer."It's not red," I said. "Then do you know what my favorite flower is?"Adrian's hand stopped. Embarrassed, he moved the bouquet of roses behind his back. "I'm sorry. From now on...""Adrian, there is no 'from now on.'" I looked at him and spoke slowly, one word at a time. "Do you even know that I'm allergic to cherries? Do you know why I gave up making potions?"

I picked up the packet and suddenly noticed a note underneath it."I went looking for these especially for you. You deserve the best."I hesitated for a long time, but eventually, I planted the seeds in a flowerpot. Two months later, one afternoon, the doorbell suddenly rang."Hello, how can I help..." I looked up, and my voice caught in my throat. It was Adrian. He had lost a lot of weight. His cheekbones were more pronounced, and dark stubble had started to shadow his jaw.My parents and Nora were right behind him."Lily." Adrian stepped forward. "We're here to take you home."I set down the herbs in my hands and looked at them calmly. "My home is here."He opened his mouth as if trying to find the right words, then said hoarsely, "You don't want me anymore? And you don't want your parents either?"I looked at him, then at my parents standing behind him, and suddenly found it all ridiculous. "Adrian, you're the ones who've never wanted me."Mom frowned. "Lily, what are you

The moment Nora said those words, the hall fell so silent that not even a breath could be heard outside the doors.Adrian stared at Nora in disbelief, saying nothing for a long moment.Thinking he was hesitating, Nora stepped closer. "Adrian, the guests inside are still waiting. The ceremony can't happen without a mate...""I don't want to." Adrian's voice was almost a sigh. But those words made Nora's smile instantly freeze."Lily is my mate," he said, looking at Nora seriously. "Not you."Nora's voice turned sharp with disbelief, like a knife driven straight into Adrian's chest. "That's impossible! You clearly... you clearly never cared about her! Every time, you let her take whatever gifts were left after I chose! You... you've always chosen me, ever since we were kids!""That's because she was always so quiet, never fighting for anything and never asking for more." Adrian closed his eyes. "I thought she didn't care... I kept taking her patience and restraint for granted, ove

He suppressed the panic rising inside him and strode to the dressing room, pushing the door open. There was no one inside. He pulled out his phone and called my number. It was turned off.He called again. Still off.Holding his phone, his expression finally shifted from confusion to a bewilderment he'd never felt before. He didn't understand how I, the unassuming girl who had always willingly followed behind him, could suddenly want to leave.Dad stood in the hall, his face dark and his eyes filled with suppressed anger. "Lily has never been as good as Nora, not since she was little. I always thought she was an obedient child. I never expected her to make all of us worry about her at a time like this!"Mom frowned as well and chimed in, "It's bad enough that she isn't very bright. Now she doesn't even care about her own bonding ceremony. Just wait until she comes back. We'll see how she gets herself out of this mess!"This time, Adrian didn't try to smooth things over. He had a

"Don't say that. Lily is just a little tired tonight. I'll take her to buy the perfume she likes. I'll cheer her up later."But Adrian had forgotten. Nora was the one who liked perfume, not me.The moment my mother faced Adrian, she put on a fawning smile. "Look how good Adrian is to you. How can you be so ungrateful? The bonding ceremony is in three days. Behave yourself!"Of course. Being chosen as the mate of Adrian, the Alpha of the pack, was apparently the greatest blessing my Gamma father could ever receive.Yet no one had ever asked whether I wanted it.I closed my eyes. "Fine."Everyone in the hall breathed a sigh of relief, as if a derailed train had finally been put back on the tracks. The next morning, Adrian came to pick me up to try on the formalwear we'd had tailor-made.Nora slipped her arm through mine affectionately. "Lily, I'm going to help you pick something out. You don't mind, right, sis?"I looked at her feigned affection and answered evenly, "Mm."Ever
