Chapter 14

Author: Peachy
Angelina's POV

Tristan glanced over at me, sitting by the window.

I was flipping through a thick art book, sunlight tracing my profile.

He just smiled, not answering his friends' teasing.

"So mysterious," one of them said, shaking his head. "Fine, don't tell us."

After they left, Tristan came and sat next to me.

"What are you reading?"

"Italian Baroque jewelry design," I said, pointing to a complex pattern on the page. "There's a seminar on it next week."

Two weeks later, a special project came

Angelina's POVThe sound of urgent footsteps echoed down the hallway.A middle-aged man in a black suit, carrying a briefcase, hurried towards us, led by a bodyguard. It was the Costa family's lead attorney from Chicago."Donna…" The lawyer saw me and instinctively started to bow."My name is Sarah," I cut him off.He froze for a second, then bowed his head deeply. The lawyer's eyes were red. He glanced at Maximus in the ICU, then pulled a thick document from his briefcase and handed it to me with both hands."This is the final testament the Boss had notarized at the law firm before he came to New York."I looked down at the document. The cover bore the Costa family's black eagle crest, the same one I had traced in gold leaf for him on our wedding day."After the Boss found out the truth about the van explosion, he sat in his study for three days and three nights. No food, no water, not a single light on," the lawyer's voice was choked with tears. "Then he spent half a month personally

Angelina's POVNew York-Presbyterian Hospital, outside the Intensive Care Unit.I had been sitting here for ten hours.Through the sterile glass, I could see Maximus, hooked up to a dozen tubes, the ventilator hissing a monotonous rhythm. The man who once made the entire Chicago underworld tremble now looked like a fragile shell, his life ready to be extinguished at any moment."The attending physician said he has catastrophic injuries to his spine and internal organs," Tristan said, walking over with two cups of hot coffee. He sat down beside me, his voice low. "His L1 through L4 vertebrae are completely shattered. A piece of rebar went straight through his spinal cord. Even if he survives, he'll likely never wake up. He's in an irreversible coma."In other words, a vegetative state.I took the coffee, the warmth seeping into my cold hands. But I still felt frozen."You don't have to stay here with me," I said, my voice hoarse, my eyes fixed on the man in the glass room.Tristan was s

Angelina's POVMassive chunks of stone and rebar rained down from the ceiling, kicking up a thick cloud of dust. The force of Maximus's push sent me sprawling into a safe corner several feet away.My ears rang from the deafening roar of the collapse. Through the dust, I saw the load-bearing wall give way completely.A massive beam, mixed with tons of concrete, fell right on top of Maximus."Maximus!"My own scream startled me.I was on the floor, staring into the swirling dust at the figure pinned beneath the wreckage.Blood.So much blood. It poured from the cracks between the stones."Angel…"He struggled to lift his head, his handsome face covered in dirt and blood. One of his arms was trapped under a steel bar, twisted at an unnatural angle. But he stretched out his other hand, not to ask for help, but to push away a teetering piece of debris that was about to fall on me."Don't move! Don't move!" I yelled, my voice trembling as I saw the pool of blood spreading beneath him."You'r

Angelina's POVI put down my restoration tools and turned to face Emma and the others.Maximus had somehow moved to the doorway and was watching us quietly."Neither," I said, my voice clear and echoing in the vast vault. "I would rather die than ever love that arrogant tyrant."Emma and her friends exchanged stunned looks, clearly not expecting me to be so blunt.Maximus looked as if he'd been struck. His face went pale."Sarah…" Emma said softly. "Don't you think that was a bit too direct?""There's nothing indirect about it," I said, packing up my tools. "Some people just don't understand the meaning of 'no'."The girls looked awkwardly at Maximus in the doorway, then made an excuse and left.I headed down the hall to the restroom.Footsteps followed me."Angel," Maximus caught up to me. "How long are you going to punish me?"I washed my hands at the sink, not turning around."I'm not punishing you.""Then why…""Because this is what you are," I said, finally turning to face him, my

Angelina's POVTristan stopped chewing and was quiet for a moment."I'm not going to dig into your past," he said, turning to look at me, his eyes steady. "I saw the scars on your shoulder from the gunshots and the explosion. I know you've been living on a knife's edge.""If that man is connected to those scars, I will never let him near you again."His hand gently brushed my shoulder, where a healed scar remained."I told you who I am because I want you to know that on my home turf, in New York, even a Chicago godfather has to watch his step."I looked at his earnest face, at the tips of his ears, which were slightly red.A lump formed in my throat. I nodded."Okay."Over the next few days, Maximus tried everything to get to me.It became a silent war. He'd appear outside the art department, a dark, brooding statue, until Tristan's men formed a polite, immovable wall. He'd materialize in the library, only to be flanked by two silent men in sharp suits who would "escort" him to the exi

Angelina's POVMaximus wiped the blood from his mouth and took a staggering step back.In an instant, all six of his bodyguards drew their guns, the dark muzzles all aimed at Tristan. But Tristan didn't flinch. The usually sunny, gentle young man was now radiating a fierce energy, standing in front of me like a protective animal."Put them down!" Tristan snapped, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light. "This is Columbia University, not your turf in Chicago!"I had never seen this side of Tristan. His voice was low and cold, carrying an authority I didn't recognize."Kid, do you know who you're talking to?" one of the bodyguards threatened."I know exactly who you are," Tristan's voice was dangerously calm. "You're the ghost of Chicago. A king with no kingdom."Maximus's face went rigid."Move," he growled."Her name is Sarah," Tristan said, his voice dropping even lower. "And you're on my territory now." He didn't raise his voice, but the threat was absolute. "Get out of my city. Bef
